Hopefully someone can give me some advice.
I want to build a second PC mainly for use with my projector to play games and watch DVDs and HDTV on (as I can't afford a big High Def plasma/LCD TV).

I'd like dual core mainly so I can both record and playback mpeg2 stuff similtaneously with no dropped frames and stuff. I've always been a bit of an AMD fanboy, at least since the 64 CPUs came out, but boy do you pay a premium for their dual core processors. The intel dual core ones are around 1/2 the price.
Should I get one of those instead of going with AMD? Apparently they are better for encoding media and stuff like that which would help with the HD stuff right?

I just don't know much about the Intel chips. What are the best intel based boards to get, is DDR2 realy as wonderful as intel keep telling us, and what are the temps like compared to the Athlons that rarely get above 40C?

Also, should I get media centre windows, or try one of the open source apps like Media Portal Link
So far I'm quite impressed by it.

Can't really answer yer questions directly, but i do have a 9600 AIW runnin on my 1st gen A7n8X Delux and use it to a tv. I have an unlocked 2500 Barton runnin at almost 3000 level. Video can be sometimes a bit jerky (dropped frames) especially during playback. The AIW setup software indicates certain aspects of hardware are missin, sound is too unstable, etc. I've reinstalled twice and tweaked. They seem to reference certain intel components missin, if I remember correctly. All this to say, I'm considering building an older intel system just to run my aiw tv on, but still haven't, it's not all that bad, just not perfect.

And of course the aiw wont record and play different streams simultaneously either.

The slickest thing was my satellite receiver with the hard drive in it. Worked great :)

Stay with AMD Zybby. AMD has the only TRUE dual core processor at the moment. Read through this.

That about how intel have to use the inefficient FSB for all data transfers between the 2 cores and stuff?

Just clicked your link.
I saw that a couple of months ago, intel really took a beating.

That network makes mine look like bunk....even at it's peak. I'm trimmed down a bit now though. I haven't added or upgraded since last winter when I added my 3500+.
