BARDONECCHIA, Italy When Bill Buckner's name is invoked at the bottom of a snowboard course, your Olympic moment has not been the stuff of dreams. And while the comparisons to the infamous Boston Red Sox goat might be unfair, Lindsey Jacobellis' day at the Torino Winter Games could forever be remembered as the one that got away. The Stratton Mountain-made snowboarder left the ground near the finish line of the Women's Snowboard Cross final Friday afternoon with an Olympic gold medal in her grip. She landed with a silver-plated thud. In a bizarre ending, Jacobellis tumbled, then fumbled away a 50-yard lead and a sure gold when an overly embellished jump went awry. The crash, in sight of the finish line, made Switzerland's Tanja Frieden a sudden champion, and left Jacobellis with silver -- and some explaining to do. She insisted her actions off the jump -- including grabbing and "tweaking" her snowboard in a freestyle move called a "method air" -- were necessary. "I'd been having trouble with that jump all day," Jacobellis told a crowded post-race news conference. "The wind had just been catching me weird, and I'd tried grabbing, all different sorts of grabs to see which one would work to try to stabilize myself in the air, but it didn't work." Asked if she was celebrating too early a victory she deserved and had well earned, Jacobellis said no. "I had no idea where the other riders were," she said. "I was just going as fast as I possibly could. ... I just wasn't able to keep it together on that last jump." A few hours later, in a tele-conference, Jacobellis held to that, but also conceded there might have been some hot-dogging at play. "I was having fun," she said. "Snowboarding is fun. I was ahead. I wanted to share my enthusiasm with the crowd. I messed up. Oh, well; it happens." Peter Foley, U.S. snowboarding head coach, at first wasn't sure what had happened to his American starlet. After watching a video replay of the crash, however, he said he thought Jacobellis had erred on the side of flair. Stupid bitch. Thats what happens when ya show off!
