A 33" NEC plasma screen for A$256 (about US$180). Got a couple of dead pixels, but I'm just gonna be using it for when I have to fix up customer's PCs. Wall mounted it will be just fine. |

Yeah but what's the resolution? Can it be read at better than 640 x 480 or is it just good for low res games? |

Looks like I'll be using it as a DVD monitor in my bedroom, perhaps hook up a digital TV box to it as well. Not to worry, I got a 21" CRT screen turning up soon to use for my stupid clients' PCs. |

It should be fine for that, but if those specs were right it's just SD. |

Thats fine. I haven't get any HD devices anyway, also the viewing distance is too far away from the screen for most people to be able to pick the diff between SD and HD anyway. At least according to this Viewing Calculator. I've seen so many ppl with HD stuff that looks totaly identical to SD coz they have the bloody TV so far away. What a waste of money. Besides, I'm not sure I'll be keeping the 3300 anyway. I might just sell it on eBay for a rather tidy profit

Yeah profit is ok too! The idea with HD is it needs to appear really really big, like that clacalater says. Everybody has been told for so long to watch tv small and far away, they just don't get it. It should be more like going to a theatre, so the detail that was paid for can be appreciated!

Absolutley. I have an 800x600 projector, and people are just amazed at the extra perceived detail they can see when the picture is on an 8 foot screen, even though its certainly not High Def. Its staggering the number of folks who still have 34cm (15") and 51cm (20") TVs. Makes you just wanna cry

Many ppl would also be amazed just how fuckin good 640x480 can look, straight off a $80,000 camera in SDI (serial digital, also known as IEEE 601) on a $10,000 calibrated 19" or 13" monitor, the way I see it when i shade cameras, my other profession. But of course HD looks ever so much better, but since it's a totally digital medium, the additional shock value is twice as great. Uncompressed it's absolutely amazing. In a week or so I'll be doing sound on a 2 1/2 week production for the Museum of Television and Radio. One of the clips will be displayed at about 35 feet wide, uncompressed video tape (1080p) with 5.1 surround in one of the best theatres in Los Angeles, the Directors Guild Theatre 1. I'm lookin forward to it, we'll be using a pair of dual converged projectors, guessin about 100 grand each.

Well he's in that one, second from right... here's another so so pik at the same gig... (most of you have seen these before elsewhere, but thanks )![]() The captions were : Meet the Nominees for DGA Director of the Year left to right: Paul Haggis (Crash), Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountian), Bennett Miller (Capote), George Clooney (Good Night, and Good Luck), and Steven Spielberg (Munich). Jeremy Kagan (also a director, far right) moderates. Ang Lee won again, of course, his second DGA Director of the Year Award. The first was for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in 2000. This (the close up) was a 173mm focal length shot from about 65 feet. |
