Thats pretty nice photo. Everything is centered perfectly. Is that the result of post procesing or did you nail it with the camera?

Actually thanks, the framing is as shot, and it was handheld... the color balance and sharpness is all that was adjusted, but that's always the case because I shoot in RAW. :)

Why do you shoot in raw format?

It's a pain in the ass, but the color space is larger in Adobe, and all the compression can then be done on the computer, so you get lotsa chances of fixing everything before it's been compressed which improves the image quality. Once the image has been compressed, there is loss each time the file is modified much like analog tape or mp3 vs wave. The RAW files off my 5D are between 12 n 13M usually.

Its the same as if you let your scanner's software do auto descreen filtering, or if you wait till you have the pristine image and do it manually yourself.
I'd shoot in RAW, but I haven't got a goot enough camera to be worth it just yet.
I just picked up a 2gb SD card, which should give me all the motivation I need to save for a nice camera.

The new Canon 30D looks fuckin cool, a nice lil brother to my 5D, only available in Oz until May... I might get one. Compact flash tho... Posted Image

You need to do a writeup about what to look for in a good digital camera, genesound. Seriously, I'd love to see what you're using and why. It might help me when I go buy a better camera in the next couple of months.

There are no doubt many more parameters regarding digital cameras than I am aware of. I'm not entirely sure what you're lookin for here....

I have a Canon EOS 5D. It's a digital SLR type, with a full frame sensor, that is it has a full 35mm sensor, same size as 35mm film. It uses a cmos imager with 12.8M pixels. It has a mirror that allows you to see the image in the viewfinder through the lens, that flips out of the way just as the (if film) manual shutter opens for the required time to expose the sensor to the image that's projected on the sensor from the lens. It also has compatability with most of the high end lenses from Canon's lineup. The real key to photography is in the lens, the amount of light it collects and the uniformity with which it does it.

I'm also interested in the brand new Canon EOS 30D. It has a smaller sensor, 1/1.6 the size (like the 20D), and has a resolution of 8.2M pixels (like the 20D), but it has more of the features of the 5D (like the bigger lcd, settings, and such) but is considerably less than half the price of the 5D, around $1399 without a lens. It's like shooting through the same lenses , but they're 1.6 times as long... So my 200mm lense appears as a 320mm through a 20D or 30D. Basically the imager is smaller, so it uses less of the lens... the "outside" part never renders light to the sensor. Get it? So, this is great for longshots... It's a major pain in the ass for wides.

For wide shots, the full frame sensor gets the nod everytime..

The other issue is light falloff... Cheaper lenses tend to distort the outer edges and distort perspective and color. The full frame sensors like my 5D tend to use the entire lens, maximizing this issue. But alas, most of my lenses are the premium stuff, the Canon "L" series lenses. My 70-200L IS (image stabilization) USM (Ultra-sonic motor) f/2.8 list at almost $2k new. I bought my good one on eBay for a fair $1450. They go for around $1650 new if you shop around and check resellerratings.com, essential when dealing in cameras (lotsa ripoff net sites). Thats one lens. I also have a 17-40L f/4 USM, a 50mm f/1.4 USM (very 'fast'), and a few cheaper ones... but you can see if I buy a 1.6 "crop factor" camera body, it's like getting a whole new set of lenses, just 1.6 times longer!

Please let me know if this has been any help, and what you might be interested in... not that I know, but maybe we can figgr it out...

This, BTW, is entirely different than how the pocket digicams work.

What areas do you have questions about? I might learn something here ;)

I have learned lots from reading reviews and lurking the forums at this site, this link is for the 30D preview. I am of course genesound

Well, thats above and beyond what I was thinking. I was looking at something more like this. I like Kodak cameras because they seem to take the picture the fastest. I was attracted to this particular camera because of the 12X zoom in relation to the price. It can be had for under $500.00 which will be the upper limit for my purchase.
