I agree with Bill. Hackers have ways around these things.

He's talking about trust. You know who I trust? I trust myself. Whenever I'm away from home I DO NOT access important financial information. If I absolutely have to then I tunnel home via SSH and do what needs done. There are way too many people out there with nothing better to do than fuck with people for me to trust anything on the internet. Period.

You shouldn't check anything at school like that, or a library. Many places have those live desktop interfaces that allow one person to view all other people's activities simultaniously, they can even interfere with what you are doing.

Watch yourself people.

No, you shouldn't be checking shit like that from school or the library. But I don't know of one location that has "those live desktop interfaces that allow one person to view all other people's activities simultaniously. (sic)" Someone told you that to keep you in line in the high school computer lab. The real threat comes from someone sitting down on the network with something like ettercap and scanning packets for sensitive data. That would be a bigger concern to me than the "live desktop" bullshit. SSH encryption will thwart this threat. So will a VPN connection home or to the office. But if you're just hanging balls out on the internet on a public hotspot you're waiting to get fucked.

It's true! My old school had them (and used them from time to time on us).

Same thing with my siblings school. I wish I could remember what it was called.

EDIT: It is a program similar to (bit more advanced) this

It was probably something like RealVNC or TightVNC (use google). But the fact of the matter is to use these tools to monitor entire networks for suspicious activity is more of a threat than a practical reality. Sure you can target an individual and monitor him/her, but its just not cost effective to monitor a whole network in this manner. Tools like ettercap and ethereal (use google again) would be better solutions. Despite what some people here might tell you, being able to use command line driven tools can have huge benefits. Dumping the output of ettercap to a logfile to read later, for example, is far less obvious than sitting there watching a RealVNC session live on your monitor. Besides, you actually have to install a server on each PC you want to have remote access to to do what it is you're talking about. The two tools I mentioned above will allow you to monitor an ENTIRE NETWORK without alerting the other users. An admin may notice abnormal network activity, but you could always DOS him with ettercap and lock him out of the network once you know his location. NMAP (google is your friend) would be a good tool to look for him before you get the party started. Theres a lot of fun stuff you can do with a computer network. Trust me.
