Name:

Zexion

Picture:

Age:

No one's quite sure, but he appears to be in his late teens or early twenties. Perhaps approximately eighteen or nineteen?

Hometown:

Hollow Bastion (as Ienzo), then the World that Never Was and Castle Oblivion

Current Location:

Radiant Garden

Fandom:

Kingdom Hearts

Why are they here?:

Zexion may be a Nobody, but that doesn't mean he aches for oblivion. As a thinking, reasoning being, he has the same survival instincts as a "real" person. As such, being absorbed by the Replica Riku was not precisely on his list of things to do back in Castle Oblivion.

Control over illusions is quite a useful thing, as is the ability to make clones of oneself. Combined, they can provide quite a bit of power...certainly enough to convince one red-headed maniac and one empty-headed puppet that they destroyed the real Zexion, instead of simply one of his clones, as the real one escaped to another world through a dark portal...

Other Characters:

Myde

History:

Ienzo was a boy, young and bright, when he found himself, recently made an orphan, under the care of Ansem the Wise. When it became clear he would not be satisfied with the "normal" life that Ansem and his apprentices tried to provide him with, he instead became one of the apprentices himself - a choice that would, eventually, cost him his life.

As one of Ansem's five apprentices, he, along with an older apprentice, Even, studied various things, experimenting, researching, and steadily growing older. When he was approximately sixteen years old, however, he, Even, and Ansem, along with Ansem's newest apprentice, Xehanort, began the research that would change their lives forever: the study of the heart.

Experiment after experiment drew them on, all confident that they were getting so close to answers, all disregarding the danger they were in. It wasn't until after the first sacrifice that Ansem realized that what they were doing was dangerous and wrong. Though it was only a stray cat, killed - Xehanort's idea - in order to study the behavior of its heart, Ansem was sickened by it, and ordered the three to cease experimenting on the topic altogether.

Ienzo, however, had no desire to stop. Acting out of his known placement as Ansem's favorite, he appealed to Ansem's logic and desire to achieve answers, and, with a promise that there would be no more sacrifices, received his master's grudging approval to continue. Even, Xehanort, and Ienzo were on their own, however; they reported their findings to Ansem regularly, but he refused to take any part in the experiments.

Free from the restrictions of Ansem's direct attention, the three plowed ahead. They kept to their promise of no killing, but Ienzo's observations of the behavior of the cat's heart gave them something new to experiment with: a machine that could create a dark being which was normally created when a creature lost its heart. They called this a Heartless, and studied its behavior for weeks as it attacked the glass walls that held it captive.

Three weeks after their first production of a heartless, disaster struck. A terrifyingly strong earthquake rocked the ground upon which the castle stood, cracking many windows, smashing dinnerware, causing a few mild injuries, and the accidental destruction of one small glass cage, far below the ground.

Xehanort was in the lab when the earthquake struck late at night, taking notes on any changes in the creature's behavior; he was the first victim. His scream drew Braig, in his room on the floor above; he was the second victim. The tumult below drew Dilan, Even, and Aeleus, who were all victimized in short succession. Ienzo was the last, having seen Ansem off a few minutes before, to hopefully help with the earthquake victims in the city; entering the castle, he heard noise from the lowest basement and went to investigate.

Even as Zexion, he has never regained the full memories of what exactly happened as he entered the lowest basement. All he can remember is pain, and terrible, all-encompassing darkness.

His next memories are scattered and illusive to his seeking mind; snapshots of memory are all he possesses from his early time as a Nobody. Waking up in a dark place near the sound of water; Xehanort gathering them together; glowing letters in the air spelling a new name for him; moving into an empty castle they found.

A few weeks into his new existence, his memories are far clearer; Zexion remembers the early settling process, organizing the Organization and setting it a purpose. He can remember the research he conducted to figure out what they were and how they came to be, learning more about hearts and Heartless in the process; he remembers the arrivals of several others - Saix, Axel, Demyx.

This new life of his became daily routine; missions, exploration, and research became his way of life as other joined their Organization: Luxord, Marluxia, Larxene.

And then life changed again, with Xemnas's introduction of their newest member: the keyblade wielder, Roxas...

Suddenly their Organization had a purpose again, where before they'd been running in circles, doing pointless missions and wishing for the impossible. Now they had a Keyblade wielder, who could release the hearts from their prison in the Heartless and send them to Kingdom Hearts. Xemnas told them daily that completing Kingdom Hearts would give them their hearts back, and they believed him. What else could any of them believe? They all wanted to be whole.

Zexion believed in this goal more than some of the others; to the neophytes like Marluxia and Larxene, it was less real, less possible, but he had done the research, seen the changes, made the machine that produced Heartless, and he knew that it could be done. He dedicated himself to it, allowing himself to follow Xemnas blindly, trusting that he knew what he was doing.

For all he'd grown since he was a boy, Zexion was still as naive as when he'd first become Ansem's apprentice.

Things changed in the Organization. A number of them were sent to Castle Oblivion, where Zexion, Lexaeus, and Vexen worked in the basement on various projects: Vexen on his precious Replica, Lexaeus on research and observations on the lesser Nobodies under their command, and Zexion on exploring the other worlds they could access through corridors of darkness. Daily life - missions, research, writing, reading, dealing with the other idiots sent with them there - continued, until the day that the Keyblade wielder set foot in the Castle, followed closely by his friend from the darkness.

One by one, the Castle Oblivion members fell in fighting one or the other. Zexion lived through Lexaeus's disappearance and Vexen's obliteration, until he himself confronted Riku.

He barely survived, having just enough energy left to create and fall through a corridor of darkness back into the basement of Castle Oblivion. Exhausted and injured, the last thing he was expecting was to be cornered by Axel and the puppet.

When Zexion realized their purpose was not to help him best Riku, but in fact to get rid of him, his panic gave him energy enough to save himself. As the Replica approached, Zexion created a clone to stand in his place and formed an illusion to hide him as he disappeared through a corridor of darkness. Neither suspected a thing.

Coming out in a little-used portion of the Castle That Never Was which he'd found in his early days as a Nobody and had often used as an escape from the daily dreariness of dealing with the other members of the Organization, Zexion collapsed completely, drained of energy.

It took him three days to recover, hiding in those rooms from sight and hearing. Those three days gave him ample time to think, something he hadn't been doing enough of previously. After all, he knew Xemnas - Xehanort - better than to trust him with so much at stake. Xemnas was powerhungry, willing to use anyone he could and toss them by the wayside when their usefulness ran out.

Zexion supposed that someone being given the order to destroy him was inevitable. Axel had shown no hesitation or worry that would have said he was doing other than performing an ordered execution, just as he had done with Vexen, and that meant that Zexion was not meant to still be existing.

Above all, that meant he had to hide. He was dead to the Organization, dead and gone. There was nothing left for him there but the promise of real death if he stayed.

So as soon as he was strong enough to move, Zexion left the World That Never Was and fled to his homeworld of Hollow Bastion. There, he hid his signature Organization cloak and found a new wardrobe that would hide him from any seeking a Nobody in an Organization cloak. Living as another newcomer to the world, he found work to get enough money to buy food and necessaries, and made a home in the hidden basements of the destroyed Castle, where the people fixing up the world have yet to access.

Right Now:

Zexion has found a hiding place in Radiant Garden from his memories of Ienzo, and is currently plotting revenge on Sora, Riku, Axel, Repliku, and whoever else he can blame for his current situation.
