IMHO: ELI just pulled off the most impossible upset, with a drive that should have a particular play gain a permenant name attached to it. |

Namath and the Jets beating the invincible Unitas led Colts is the greatest SB upset of all time. The Jets were bigger underdogs, and this game actually proved that the AFL could compete with the "then sopposedly superior" NFL. The Jets were only there to give Unitas and company a team to run the score up on. NOBODY (besides the Jets faithful) thought they could win. Absolutely NOBODY! I would say this year was the 2nd greatest upset in SB history. There were those out there (like myself) who actually thought the Giants would truly win the game. Again, I reiterate, nobody thought the Jets would beat the Colts. For those that are not football historians like myself, it was like Buster Douglas beating Mike Tyson. Nobody but the Douglas camp thought they could win, and even then, some of them had doubts. SB 3 pretty much single handedly ratified the "merger" of the AFL-NFL 3 years prior to this game. The Jets were 18 point underdogs. The Giants were only 12-13.5 dogs. Dont get me wrong, this years was a HUGE upset to many people, not to me, I thought the Giants were honestly playing better ball than the Patriots at this time, and they were. SB 3 = Greatest SB upset of all time. |

I have to agree with Frank here, I don't think this one was as big of an upset as the Jets/Colts SB. Although I'm a little lighter in the wallet taking the field (I'd still make the same bet 10 times out of 10), I was thrilled to see the Giants win. What a game! And I believed at the end of week 17 that if there was one team that could do it, it would be the G men. Simply because of the confidence that they had putting 30+ points on the unbeatable Patriots right before going into the playoffs. The Giants knew that they could hang with these guys. And I'm overall happy that the unbeatable Patriots got a taste of humility. It's not that I wouldn't have been appreciative of perfection, but there is something about an underdog stepping up and beating the odds that makes for what I feel is a better story. And what can you say about Eli Manning now? Prior to the start of the game, watching Eli run onto the field, he smiled and waved to Tom Brady, and Brady in return gave him an icy cold stare. Eli just shrugged, smiled, and kept running. At that moment I became a big Eli Manning fan. Although I don't think he was quite deserved of the Super Bowl MVP title - that honor I would have EASILY bestowed on the NYG Defense - Eli never buckled under pressure and led them to victory despite what all the naysayers would have you believe. It was a big upset, and a part of me would have liked to have see the 72 dolphins drink water instead of wine. But, it was a great game and a great season. I'll say this much, I wouldn't want to be the team to face the Patriots in week 1 next season.... DJINN |
