I like it. This will be a good starting point for a deck. Thanks Frank |

Frank--- As U/W Control is one of the two decks I've narrowed down to playing in KC, I think it's worth discussing various builds along with explanations for card choices. I haven't focused on a sideboard yet, as my main concern was finding a maindeck build that I felt would give me the best chance against a wide range of decks. I initially built your U/W and tested it against Valakut, U/B, and B/R Vampires. Here were some observations we made tonight after a lengthy testing session: ----Venser almost always wanted to be Gideon. The times he did anything of major importance was greatly outnumbered by the times he didn't immediately or relevantly impact the board. In one game I played him with Sun Titan and Frost Titan up---and that was insane to be certain---but I also had Frost Titan and Sun Titan up which was more than enough to accomplish what I needed to accomplish. IMO, it should be replaced with Gideon #3. He's great against control and Gideon coupled with DoJ is unfair for any aggro deck. ----Speaking of Sun/Frost Titan...they were always meh, and at times clogged up my hand. More often than not, tapping out to play one meant giving up a control advantage that I currently had (especially in the Valakut matchup). I've learned that U/W really doesn't need a bunch heavy-ended threats. In many cases, even late, it's difficult to tap out (or close to tapping out) to play a big Titan. I think a U/W deck needs to build it's deck to reach the late game and not focus on scoring a 5cc/6cc dude on T6. If I felt otherwise, then I would try to fit 2-3 Everflowing Chalice in your build as you have 14 spells that are 4cc+. But, I don't think it needs Chalice, or 5-6 beefy guys. Just a couple will do the body good. ----Speaking of creatures: Baneslayer wasn't as good as I wanted it to be. It suffered the same problem I had with the Titans - there several times where (especially against Avenger of Zendikar) where I was forced to DoJ my own guy off the board before I could do anything with it. Just getting shitty to no value out of her. But we came up with a great solution. After the initial testing and discussions, I made some adjustments. Here is my current build: U/W Control (KC - Jan. 2011) 3x Sea Gate Oracle 2x Wurmcoil Engine 4x Mana Leak 4x Spell Pierce 1x Deprive 1x Stoic Rebuttal 2x Condemn 2x Journey to Nowhere 4x Preordain 3x Day of Judgment 4x Jace the Mindsculptor 1x Jace Beleren 3x Gideon Jura 4 Celestial Colonnade 4 Glacial Fortress 4 Seachrome Coast 4 Tectonic Edge 1 Scalding Tarn 1 Marsh Flats 5 Island 3 Plains Thoughts: ----Having 4x Spell Pierce is insane against three Major Decks that I expect to be in KC in force---U/B, U/W, and Valakut. Maindeck Spell Pierce is the one thing that is so appealing about playing control this weekend, as there are just so many instances where it's just a 1 mana hard counter. ----I believe Wurmcoil Engine is the best creature for this deck. Initially I wanted Baneslayer as a lifelinking flyer for aggro matchups, but rarely was I able to get a whole lot of value out of her. Engine allows you to wrath and still get value, and maintains it's worth against whatever removal your opponents have for it. ----Sea Gate Oracle is just a great creature at the three. ----2x DoJ was just too few and suffered against the aggro matchups because of it. After upping it to 3x DoJ and 3x Gideon, the deck was back in business. Hope this helps. I haven't decided quite yet if I'm running this or I'm going with Valakut. I've got a great list that I'm happy with, but it could use a little spice in the board. I'll be thinking about these two decks a lot the next couple of days. DJINN PS - BTW gentlemen, we're flyin and traveling in style this weekend. Because we travel with Brian on the same flights, we get to forgo alot of airport nonsense up front AND we get to board first. AAANNND....he's bringing his handicap sign for the rental car so we get the choice parking all weekend long. Life is good. :-) Edited by The_Immortal_DJINN, Jan 3 2011, 12:23 AM.

I like the changes! I haven't tested this at all (hard to test when trying to plan a trip to a funeral), and really like Spell Pierce in the main, just not sure I would like a 4 pack there as they are pretty useless for the deck I THINK will be in the top 4 decks there....BR Vamps. I can see dropping it to 3 and adding another hard counter or another creature of some sort, maybe even a Sunblast Angel or something.

Whoof...my condolences man. I'm sorry about your loss. I'm sure it's not your first choice on ways to start out your new year. I think the best thing I can do for you is to outfit you with the list that's going to take you to a top 8 this weekend...(I say, top 8 because I'm currently reserving the trophy for myself. You understand. :-) BTW - we made one key change to the list I sent you: -3x Sea Gate Oracle +3x Spreading Seas Initially, I was in the same boat with you when it came to Spell Pierce. I asked Conley about Spell Pierce and he believes you either run 4x in the main or none at all in U/W. While I didn't necessarily agree with that at first, it definitely proved it's worth in testing later. I realized that Spell Pierce is a card that I'd rather have and not need than to need it and not have. I always wanted one in my opening hand. It makes games that you're on the draw just so much easier for you. And even on the play it was hot being able to lay a second land to Preordain leaving one up to Pierce. SP-ing a Quest of the Holy Relic on the play is pretty fun too :-). That said, *if* you choose to cut a SP for another hard counter (which, for the record, I don't think you should do)...then I think it should be for a second Deprive. I only really like 1x Deprive, but I can see two being fine---if for any other reason it will help mitigate the spreading seas on your collonades which is pretty relevant in the mirror. It's true that Spell Pierce isn't very effective against B/R Vampires, but it is excellent against the other three decks that will be there. I can't tell you how many times that I was staring at a useless Pyroclasm in my hand when I was playing Valakut against the mirror, and the control decks. But, the deck feels like it needs to have some kind of concession to aggro for it to have legs against the angry decks. The good news is that SP isn't 100% dead against B/R vamps (nailing Dark Tutilage, believe it or not, is pretty big and making bolts cost 3 is fine), and the deck is so inherently hateful towards aggro already that the SP's make for an easy SB choice when you go to game 2 already up a game. Much more to come. I'll also be in contact with you throughout the week to make meet up arrangements for this Friday. DJINN Edited by The_Immortal_DJINN, Jan 3 2011, 12:18 PM.

Appreciate the list and even more, the comments but with my limited time for testing this week, I will be sticking with what I feel comfortable with against the field. Love the list though. |

What are you guys thinking of playing? Do you guys need any cards? Right now I have built U/W, U/B (proxies), a new twist to G. Wave, and Valakut. Let me know when you feel you'll have more time to discuss. At minimum, I think Friday should be spent testing, testing, testing, and doing more testing. DJINN |

Paul - Please take this as constructive criticism. There's a huge difference in preparing for a local 80 man PTQ where, if the brackets go well, some of us would have a good to excellent chance of competing against you. Hoarding information for an advantage and friendly ribbing in that PTQ makes sense, I suppose. But trolling this post, a post where we've been fairly forthcoming with our own ideas and theories, with an "I gots the super secret tech ice cream and you don't so nyah-nyah-nyah-nyah-nyah" when the open event we're going to could break 500 players and the likelihood of us facing one another is extremely unlikely...well, I'll let you think about how that makes you look in everyone's eyes. If you have a list or some interesting ideas, share them with the people who have proven that they won't hold back sharing their own ideas with you. If you want to keep them to yourself, that's cool too. But when you post stuff like this without elaborating...just trust me when I say that nobody is going to write songs about your wisdom with the chorus line of "Gee, why didn't I think of that?". I am playing what I am comfortable with at this time. Eldrazi Ramp. I like my game against UB and UW and feel confident against Valakut. My worst match ups are against Vamps and RDW and I have added Platinum Emperyon to help out with those. Friday night for me will be spent getting in as much testing as possible. |

Chris - Just glancing at your build, it looks like you'll own your aggro matchups and lose to everything else. We'll talk more about this tomorrow. DJINN |
