It's our meta game for the Springs. Last week their was 6 Mono-Red aggro variants (believe or not I didn't play red so there would have been 7 but I went on a coin flip). I'm guessing (like everyone) that Ramp and U/X control decks will take a majority of the field. Listen to this man Chris. |

I don't think squadron hawk is a good idea. Ilike Djinz Idea about spell pierce main. Also, wurmcoil = the shit especially since you WILL wrath the board. You NEED baneslayers and day incase you his geia's revenge. It's evil when you're holding a counter, a condemn and a journey to nowhere... been there. Spreading seas main is sexy against valakut and mono red. Mindbreak trap in side helps against Eldrazi and Geia's revenge. 2 wall of omens is bad. 3-4 or none. 4 mana leaks always. You're only real card draw is jace, so you need 4 and at least one of 1.0 just my two cents from the testing I've done and winning FNM last week. |
As a Ninja, the smallest container I can fit into would be maybe a tic tac container. Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.

Agreed.
Aye.
Yep.
Wurmcoil answers the Revenge question too and isn't soft to removal.
It's also pretty good against B/R Vampires as shutting off their red sources can be key.
Haven't messed with a SB yet, but that sounds good.
I vote none. They really don't do anything.
Yessir.
Bingo. Say...you must have played this deck before... :-) DJINN |

I'm not a fan of conditional counters. Especially not Spell Pierce. Mana leak, I can understand. SP == not for me. |

So I guess then you shouldn't play Mana Leak in your U/W either. You're opponent may have the 3 mana to pay for it. DJINN (PS - Don't worry. I'll convince you on Spell Pierce) Edited by The_Immortal_DJINN, Jan 6 2011, 03:47 PM.

Spell pierce is great, but drawing it late game is terrible. You have a GREAT first game against most matchups if you remember what deck you are actually playign WITH, AND against. I am putting pierce in the side I think. I don't like a UW list without frost titan and baneslayer. Venser was terrible. Spreading seas is a good secondary card draw too since wall isn't worth it. mono red beats isn't a threat anymore and it doesn't do much against anything else at the moment. Standard is very much about the late game now. |

You're exactly right - playing U/W is all about getting to the late game which is why Spell Pierce is so important in the early stages. SP allows you to counter early ramp, first turn Inquisitions, first turn quests, etc. as well as giving you 4 incredible weapons against the mirror. Sure drawing a Spell Pierce late in the game may not matter as much as it does in the early to mid, so you ship it away with Jace and move on with your day. And if you've reached the late game, then you've already reached your goal of getting to that point and probably already winning as U/W has the best late game out of all of the Standard decks. Personally I don't think U/W is positioned very well for the current environment. But the way U/W can adapt and give itself a really good chance is by running 10 counters - four of them being SP. If for whatever reason I wasn't able to maindeck run them, I wouldn't run the deck. Period. I'd play B/R Vamps first. The other thing to consider when you're looking at 9 rounds of play, and you decide you want to run control, you had better have a great game 1 plan if/when you face another slow developmental control deck. The U/W deck needs to win game 1. Period. A control deck cannot afford to lose a long game 1 and expect to win two back to back games 2 and 3 in like 20 minutes. And draws early are a killer. I'd rather lose a game 1 to fast beatdown knowing I have a lot of time left in the match to capture two games. As for Baneslayer and Frost Titan, they're both fine cards, I just think that Wurmcoil is better for our purposes. In a lot of cases we have to tap out or get close to tapping out to play any of these creatures, and if that's the case, I'd rather do it for Wurmcoil knowing that they it can't simply die to a doom blade. And nothing sucks worse then tapping out for Frost Titan just to be greeted by an Avenger and you're only option is to DoJ everything including your Baneslayers and Frost Titans away. Anywho...I will put multiple decks in Chris' hands, I will play him with my U/W, and I will ask him afterwards how much fun it was playing around the threat of Spell Pierce. I'm positive he'll be a convert, and if he's not, then I think we're looking at a case of cutting the nose off to spite the face. But I know Chris is smarter than that. :-) DJINN Edited by The_Immortal_DJINN, Jan 6 2011, 06:56 PM.

For those that were curious... The following was the deck that I played to a 7-3 record, in which I lost 2 of those 3 matches due to bad luck. 4 Preordain 4 Day of Judgment 4 Mana Leak 4 Spell Pierce 3 Journey to Nowhere 4 Spreading Seas =-= 23 Spells 4 Jace the Mind Sculptor 3 Gideon Jura 1 Jace Beleren =-= 8 Planeswalkers 3 Baneslayer =-= 3 Creatures 4 Celestial Colonnade 4 Tectonic Edge 1 Scalding Tarn 1 Marsh Flats 4 Glacial Fortress 4 Seachrome Coast 4 Island 4 Plains =-= 26 Lands Sideboard 1 Journey to Nowhere 4 Leyline of Sanctity 4 Luminarch Ascension 2 Ratchet Bomb 3 Condemn 1 Baneslayer Angel Thanks to Djinn and Brian for setting me straight on what I was playing. I know that if I didn't take your advice, I would of finished considerably worse off. |
