Lemme hop on this bandwagon late and post my top 5 Hip-Hop Albums/Mixtapes of the year, with honorable mentions. I decided to choose Hip-Hop only because that was the genre this year that I listened to most and the genre that I listened to new releases most. I've really been about dat free mixtape life this year.

Honorable Mentions

Tyler, The Creator - Wolf

wow kramer tyler is bad and u should feel bad god damn what are u thinking if this were in ur t5 we'd disown u from SPV3

Alright. Now that that instant reaction is out of the way, I'll explain why I decided to give Tyler an honorable mention. I'll admit that I have no idea if fucking with Tyler and the rest of Odd Future is some kind of phase I have right now or if it's real. It's a question I ask myself about any artist I listen to, but especially Tyler, The Creator and the rest of his crew especially with the style that is presented in their music. What I can say is that this album is pretty solid. Tyler, while still being the eccentric and wild person he is, has definitely shown change as an artist. Wolf is definitely not as jam packed with angst and hatred as his last album, Goblin was. On top of that, the album as a whole is definitely an improvement over Goblin as well from top to bottom. "Answer" and "Bimmer" (both good songs) show a softer side to Tyler, and "IFHY" is Wolf's version of "She", however maybe a more softer version with Pharrell. Definitely worth a listen if you've got the time.

Lil B - 05 Fuck Em

THANK YOU BASED GOD FOR PULLING THE BEYONCE-LIKE UNEXPECTED MIXTAPE DROP ON CHRISTMAS EVE THIS MADE MY CHRISTMAS AND MY YEAR HOLY SHIT

God damn. Lil B brings it in 05 Fuck Em. It's a huge 101-track mixtape. All songs are very #BASED. He even gives a shoutout to Seattle in "4 My". I could go on and on talking about how great this album is but I don't want this post to span an entire page. Just know that this is the greatest Lil B mixtape ever and it'd be my #1 of this post but nobody would take me seriously ever again.

Praying 4 A Brick
GOR (God Of Rap)
FUCKING EVERYTHING ELSE

Earl Sweatshirt - Doris

Again, not sure if me liking OFWGKTA members is some sort of phase, but we'll see. I thought Earl had the potential to break out even higher than Tyler did with this album, but it didn't happen. However I still think he has a bright future and this album has a lot of good shit in it. I really like his style and flow, and I think his big break is gonna come. This album isn't in my top 5 because even though this album has some really good tracks, it has its lows as well as its highs. Sometimes Earl loses my attention in Doris, making the album a bit inconsistent. Still a good album overall though.

Top 5 Hip-Hop Albums/Mixtapes of 2013

5. The Underachievers - Indigoism

Pretty solid mixtape from top to bottom. These guys add themselves to a growing list of young east coast artists breaking out into the rap game. It's a pretty exciting era in hip-hop right now with tons of talented artists making a name for themselves, and of course the countless free mixtapes from these artists. "Land of Lords", "Gold Soul Theory", and "The Mahdi" are all great tracks and nothing beats free. Definitely a mixtape that's worth the download and listen.

The Mahdi
Land of Lords

4. Joey Bada$$ - Summer Knights
Posted Image
This guy is going to be one of the next big names in hip-hop. While this mixtape was not as good as his last one (1999) was, this one is still very good. Released a few months after one of his closest friends and fellow Pro Era member Capital STEEZ died, Summer Knights definitely carries the "RIP" vibe a bit, especially in songs like "LongLiveSteelo". "Sweet Dreams", "95 Til Infinity", "Hillary Swank", "Unorthodox", and "Right On Time" are all must-listens. Next year, Joey Bada$$ is supposed to release is debut album and it's definitely one of the few releases of next year that I am the most excited for. Expect this guy to be on the radio or at least rack up spotify streams sometime soon.

Unorthodox
Sweet Dreams

3. Kanye West - Yeezus

I have to have at least one big release in this list. It's just how it has to be. But make no mistake, I didn't put Yeezus as my #3 just because I felt I had to put in a major release in this list. Not at all. This album deserves it. It's the most polarizing album of the year. You either love it or hate it. I didn't think much of this album at first, but then I gave it a second listen and immediately found my self on the "love" side. Yeezus keeps you hooked from beginning to end. "Black Skinhead" gets you pumped up (as Mac said). While "Bound 2" has the worst music video of all time, the song itself is still good. Fuck the haters. This isn't music, this is Yeezus.

Black Skinhead
Bound 2 (Not Music Video, I swear!)

2. Logic - Young Sinatra: Welcome To Forever
Posted Image
God damn I love Logic. He doesn't offer some unique, crazy gimmick. He's just somebody who works as so fucking hard and presents you with the realest shit out there. The standout thing about is him is how real he is and his technical precision and flow. This mixtape is everything that logic is. It's class and realism. "Welcome To Forever", "Walk On By", "5AM", and "Ballin" are some of my favorite songs by him. He even decides to sample the beat for "Ms. Jackson" in "Roll Call" and holds his own. Very impressive. Young Sinatra: Welcome To Forever is definitely worth the free download. Like Joey Bada$$, he's got an album slated for release in 2014, and it should be one of the best this year. You should also watch out for this guy, he's going places.

5AM
Walk On By

1. Chance The Rapper - Acid Rap
Posted Image
To me, 2013 is the year of the young, up and coming rapper. That's why four of my top five albums/mixtapes consist of young, hungry artists. So doesn't it make sense to have my #1 be a guy like that? Chance absolutely came out of nowhere for me. All of a sudden by summertime I just heard people out of nowhere talking about Chance and this mixtape. So I had to give it a download and listen. This one is absolutely amazing. "Pusha Man", "Cocoa Butter Kisses", and "Juice" are some of my favorite songs this year. I don't know if Chance has anything coming out next year but I'm definitely excited for his future.

Highlights:
Pusha Man (with hidden track)
Cocoa Butter Kisses

Five out of the eight albums/mixtapes I just talked about are free to download. Do yourself a favor and go on datpiff.com or wherever and download these. Worth the time. Spotify is also an option for the 3 other albums that aren't free to download.
