There are a couple of fast ways to communicate with your team in game. One of the ways I was alerting people last night was by holding down the Alt key and clicking on the hero portrait on the top bar. This sends a message in team chat that says the hero you just clicked on is missing. Though missing calls shouldn't be a substitute for just checking your minimap, letting teammates know a big enemy like a Pudge or a Bloodseeker is missing can be very helpful. If you Alt-click on the mini-map or anywhere on the world, too, you can ping the map to alert allies of something, whether it's an enemy hero storming up the river or a building you want to push as a team. If you hear a ping, check your minimap to see where an ally is pinging. Personally I prefer typing over voice since I type pretty quickly and my mic quality is strangely very low in game. That being said, as Dwest mentioned, g is for mic (I rebound mine to v but that's personal preference from years of playing Source games with the same keybind). Oh yeah, also I forget what the default bind is (I think it's y), but if you hold down the y key and move your mouse around, you can bring up the chat wheel with a bunch of quick responses, including a 'missing' call. |

Generally you should try to keep the wave in a position where you have enough vision and safety to survive surprise attacks but still far enough out that you're not having trouble last hitting under turret, or far enough that you can push hard if needs be. One thing that's useful for chatting is that you can do it with one hand pretty easily. You can use the thumb for your mouse to hit the Enter key next to the numpad then type out something really basic with your left hand if you don't have much time. |

It can work to push hard but typically mid laners will use their position in mid lane to roam around the map and get kills, since they're close to everything. I taught you to push when you were learning the game or it wouldn't really make sense to say "yeah the point of the game is to destroy the enemy base but we're going to kill our own guys instead". Keeping the lane closer to your side makes you safer overall but bear in mind that if it's by your tower you have to fight your tower for last-hits and that can be hard to do. Also typing in the middle of the game can be a bit stressful and I wouldn't type in a situation where we're under pressure, but usually I can find time between last-hits or if the creep wave is moving up. Voice chat does help a lot, though. |

Yeah, I was sort of assuming the goal was just to push as fast as possible. I can see drawbacks of this now *cough*3/22*cough*. I also need to stop using Razor because as much as I like his skills, I just can't use him at all. I'm gonna try Dragon Knight and Sniper next. And Steel was telling us when you went missing, in case you thought that he wasn't. |

Okay, so here's some stuff about today: Phantom Assassin is definitely my new main. It took me a while to learn how to control her in groups, but our last game I only had 5 deaths, which is by far my best. Her teleport is fantastic for initiating or finishing, and a dagger+teleport combo is great for fleeing foes, although I have yet to really pull that off since I'm bad at using spells while running. I also need to remember what I bought in that one game that made her so fast. Plus, a passive ult that can decimate teams and have no cooldown is cool. I still like Sniper, but he's easier to get behind with, and he's far less helpful in big fights. I'll still play him if we need more ranged units or I get bored of PA. I feel comfortable enough with melee now. Maybe someday I'll retry Spectre for redemption. I definitely prefer carries. My game was Leshrac was kind of awkward and stumbling. I think he'd be a cool character to know, but I don't see myself getting good at him. I'm gonna look up builds and strategies for PA/Sniper because I usually go the exact same route, and I'm not sure it's ideal. I don't really have any questions. Just stuff. Oh, also, last game, we beat the easy bots fairly easily. Obviously not that soon, but, at this rate, we may need to move to medium sooner than I thought. edit: i kept trying to scroll up by mousing to the top of the screen; fix me Edited by DarkFlashlight, Mar 3 2014, 07:34 AM.

DOTA 2: Day 2: Electric Boogaloo: Rise of the Easy Bots First off, I'd like to thank everyone involved for keeping me away from social media on an award show night. This is always awesome because award shows suck balls, and Twitter/Facebook are insufferable. I would have wanted to go from passive bots to easy bots soon enough anyway. Sure, I knew I would get my ass reamed by them, especially in my first game, but you're not going to learn how to play a game like this without playing against bots that will provide a challenge. Needless to say, I got my ass kicked in the first game and needed a break afterwards. I was a wee bit frustrated. It kind of felt like the jump from medium to hard guitar in GH, and we all know how painful *that* shit was. But after the first game against easy bots, it got better. I think I found the first hero I really enjoy playing as: Drow Ranger. I played two games with her, the first one being just to test her out, and the second one just being a great game in which she styled. I REALLY like her for her Q and her W, both of which are legit attacks (Q is easily spammed because it's cheap, which I love), with her ultimate being a nice passive bonus. I don't give a toss about her E. Props to Oli for helping me build her in that game; I wouldn't have figured out how to build the Butterfly. But yeah, I wonder what heroes play most similarly to her because that's a fun playstyle. Did not enjoy Luna much. I like her Q and the way her weapon bounces from creep to creep, but that's really about it. I guess she moves reasonably fast, too. Tried a melee hero. I guess I picked Juggernaut because he was being discussed by the random guy who joined us for the last game. That and I couldn't decide on a hero. I didn't have this topic open because I am a derp, so I couldn't look at the lists of good beginner heroes. Oops. I got roflstomped at the beginning of the game, but I do feel that as the game wore on, I played a bit better. I wasn't spectacular or anything, but I wasn't dying every minute or two either, which was progress. I got about three more kills than I'd have anticipated, too. I wouldn't be against using him again, though not until I try out other melee heroes. Lol my Bane. Needless to say, I won't be picking him again any time soon. Let's just forget that game was a thing. The night ended on a much better note though. Lina is hot, being a redhead and all, but I suck too hard at playing her to try her again. Idk, I just don't think she did much damage, she seemed fragile, and I feel like she moves rather slow. The game with cosecant/Darkie/myself versus Oli/dwest/Lightning lasted a lot longer than I'd have thought. I also feel like our communication as a team would be better (read: existent) if we had a better grasp of the game. Without all the experience that someone like Oli or Steelfire has, it's hard to formulate a strategy without second-guessing yourself, or worse, having it blow up in your face. I obviously still have a loooooooooot to learn, but today was a pretty fun day and I feel like I'm improving. At this point that's really about all I can ask for. Yeah I had a lot of fun tonight. I don't recall having any absolutely horrible games filled with frustration and despair. I mostly stuck with Ancient Apparition, I think I'm getting better and better with, mostly because I think I'm finally getting a bit better with items (though I still have a long ways to go). Before tonight, the best I'd really do with Ancient Apparition is some well-timed ults and spamming my spells during larger fights, but I was mostly helpless on my own or in smaller groups since I'd die really easily. Now I'm finding it possible to actually hold my own in fights with him, which makes the game a lot more fun. I gave Clockwerk another try towards the end, since I had mixed results with him in the past. I didn't enjoy playing as him much. He doesn't hit hard enough at all. The spell that traps an enemy in with you is very nifty, but Clockwerk is so weak that I was finding it difficult to finish anyone off while they were in there. I absolutely needed another teammate around to help finish them off if I wanted to. His ult is also nifty, but it's way too difficult to pull off cleanly. I just wasn't a fan. It was better towards the end, but it was just very unfun for most of the game. Lycan was fun. I think it may have been my first time as a carry. That was the game that we lost in a very ugly fashion, though. I thought I did very well up through about 3/4 into the game, and then our entire team was just unable to handle the opponents. Chaos Knight in particular had his illusions (as did other members of the team) and it was just bad. I don't think I was really ready to be a carry and carry a team late-game, because that's when we fell apart. Still, I think I'll give him another try in the future. The guy his incredibly hard and his ult is great for chasing down opponents. If you get any opponent (or even two) in range and can trigger your ult, they're dead. I also played Visage, who I liked. I don't remember too much about that match, but I just remember liking Visage. Not quite as much as Ancient Apparition, but enough that I may use him in future games as a change of pace. But yeah tonight was fun. The best matches are still the ones where we have 6+ people and split us up between two teams, though. |

Spoiler: click to toggle I actually enjoy the game quite a bit, it has some really cool systems going on that made the game hella enjoyable when I got my head around them. I love the idea of the secret shop and the courier as a whole. That said, I really dislike the turret aggro system. There's no beep to say "Hey, you're being targetted" so I quite often don't realise until I've taken two or three hits because it attacks so fast; on top of that, I'm usually standing in a position where I can't work out why it would aggro me. Oh well. The biggest thing I'm having trouble adjusting to is the fact you have to take time to turn around in DotA. This sounds incredibly minor, but in LoL you just move where you click to with no delay, which means Auto Attack Champions can kite/orbwalk; essentially move away from attacking enemies while turning to attack and running away again all in a brief movement. That's very hard to do here and this seeming lack of responsiveness to my movements makes the whole game hard to adjust to. As for my Heroes, Lina was more fun but I think I can still find someone more fun. Her Ult just shit out damage and her Q was nice AoE but I didn't feel like I offered much to a fight. Luna, on the other hand, would be ridiculously cool if her AA range was just a bit longer. I kept stunning people and then not being able to actually do anything while they were stunned. She also has two passive spells, so at the end of the day her "combo" is just "press Q and R, right click and hope they don't hit you". I did have a lot of fun, though. Last hitting in this game has the most satisfying sound effect on the planet and it feels very good to get a good fight off. |

Protip: Some skills, like Drow Ranger's Q, can be auto-casted by right-clicking the icon. Saves a lot of time and work than pressing Q all the time. |

I had an absolute blast playing last night. I'd have loved to do one more but that would have been just too late. I'm comfortable playing any ranged support at this point but I suppose I should try to branch out more and try a carry or something in the near future. We shall see. |

To address a couple things people wanted to know about... @Marill
The tower aggro behavior is something everyone has trouble learning, but once you figure it out you can use it to your advantage. To put things a lot more simply than they are, if you're the only thing near the tower targetting a hero or the tower itself, it's going to aggro on you. You can remove tower aggro by pressing the A key and targetting a friendly unit (regardless of whether or not you can deny it).
Turnrate is one of the biggest things people coming from LoL often have trouble with in Dota, especially on heroes that have reduced turnrates (that's something that even annoys me when I'm playing someone like Jakiro). There are heroes though you can orbwalk with. Anyone with a manually casted unique attack modifier (Drow's Frost Arrows, Viper's Poison Attack, Silencer's Glaives of Wisdom, Clinkz's searing arrows, Enchantress' Impetus, Jakiro's Liquid Fire, Huskar's Burning Spears, or Outworld Devourer's Arcane Orb) can manually use the orb and target an enemy to harass an enemy without drawing creep aggro. Keep in mind this only works when you manually cast the orb and not when you autocast.
Luna is a mid-late game carry, so her stun is less for actual stunning and more for a variety of reasons (harassing lane opponents, cancelling teleporting foes, setting up for a support). She can kill fleeing enemies one on one with her ultimate though. Carries typically do not have a combo in Dota - they like to farm up a lot and right click people down later in the game. Luna's skillset does give her the tools to do this. Her glaives bounce, letting her take out creep waves and creep camps much faster than most heroes. Plus, her movement speed and ultimate are great for chasing down fleeing foes. If they try to teleport, throw your Lucent Beam to cancel it. If they get too far away, throw a Lucent Beam to secure the kill. @LightningBolt
Unlike Luna, Clockwerk is actually one of the heroes in the game that does have a combo. He's pretty difficult to learn, but once you get comfortable with his spells you can solo kill weaker opponents as soon as you hit level 6. Basically, your skill build should be 3 points Battery Assault, 1 point Cogs, 1 point Flare, and 1 point Hookshot. If you lane your Hookshot, immediately Cogs them in activate Battery Assault. Just right click them down. Realize, though, that you probably won't be able to kill super tanky heroes (Centaur, Spirit Breaker, Dragon Knight, etc.). If you find a solo Crystal Maiden or something though you can almost always get an early solo kill and start snowballing. He's hard to learn, but if you get comfortable with him he's a constant threat for ganking. @Romanticide
Drow's E is an interesting aura that gives her and all allied ranged heroes on the map bonus damage based on Drow's Agility. This part is always active despite the fact that it looks like it's an active skill. The active part adds the bonus to ranged non-hero units around the map as well (if I remember correctly it works with Visage's Familiars which is a pretty strong combo if you know how to micro Visage well). Basically it's free damage, which is nice throughout the game and is what lets Drow carry past level 16 when she stops getting Agility from her ultimate. If you're looking for similar heroes I'm not sure. If you like someone who's very right-click oriented who also has a similar unique attack modifier, maybe Viper. Also a pro team just picked Meepo if anyone wants to watch it: Dreamleague Stream EDIT: The Meepo lost but there's a Drow pick now. Edited by steelfire81, Mar 3 2014, 07:13 PM.

I should probably try Heroes that are more alien to me to try and learn the game better instead of just sticking on the most LoL-esque ones available to me. I understand that about Luna; there's a similar Champ in LoL, Urgot, who's basically a bruiser Carry if that makes any sense who has very short range but makes up for it with great 1v1 potential. |

I never got into LoL as much as you, but I'd think it'd be easier to use LoL equivalents first. That way it's easy to pick up the Hero and you're just focusing on different game mechanics and items, while using an "alien" Hero would force you to both learn a completely new character while still adjusting to game mechanics. Whatever works for you, though. I haven't put nearly as much time as you into either game :P . |
