I actually don't mind ET. Idk I just have more fun dicking around than playing it straight lately. I mean if the match is close I'll try but yeah, we were playing HDSQ with two people we didn't know, and we had their best player on our side. The scrims are stompy enough as it is... |

In an attempt to keep this thread at the front of Entertainment, I figured we should start doing frequent discussions about... idk, I guess more 'abstract' or 'debatable' topics in the Dotaverse. Because I think it says a lot about how much we've learned playing for as long as we have, and even though you all learned basically the same way we all have different styles/opinions so it's nice to hear different viewpoints, and we get to stretch our minds, flex a bit there. Topic 1: Early, mid, late What makes a hero or team strongest in the early game? In the midgame? In the lategame? This can be in reference to hero choice, item build, playstyle, etc. |

I kind of just put early/mid game together in my mind, though there are some difference in what makes a hero good in one and not the other. In general, though, I think the obvious thing that makes a hero dangerous in the early/mid game is flat damage increases. Viper's probably the biggest example, but there are obviously a lot of heroes like this. Spectre's a hero that fits this that isn't thought of as an early/mid game hero, but she does have her nuke in addition to her passive damage increase that does make her a very dangerous ganker capable of snowballing (though she probably requires more skill to snowball compared to someone like Faceless Void). That said, there are a lot of things that factor into it, obviously. Phantom Assassin doesn't have much in the way of flat damage hikes that scale well mid but poorly late, but she's still largely considered at her peak in the mid game due to MKB and BKB countering 3 of her 4 skills (so her window for being at her most dangerous is mid-game when most heroes aren't going to have both items). This I guess leads into items. I think we tend not to buy items that make carries good in the early/mid game and we aim for late game too often. Drum of Endurance is a really good item for mid-game carries and I don't think we buy it very often. It's a cheap source of movespeed and good stats, which benefits almost all mid-game carries. From what I've seen, Treads -> Drum -> Manta is basically THE mid-game carry build. I forget most of what I was going to say, but I think what makes late game carries so dangerous is usually some sort of defensive mechanism. I think almost all of the common late game carries have one in some form. Faceless Void has his evasion that can't be countered, Medusa has her mana shield, Spectre reflects a percentage of damage back at the enemy, Anti-Mage has magic resistance and a good escape ability, Phantom Lancer and Terrorblade get illusion shenanigans. This isn't true of all late game carries, but those are some of the biggest ones and it holds true for them. Sniper is one that doesn't have any innate defense built into his build, but at the same time you can probably say his range grants him survivability late game when coupled with smart positioning. I'm tired of losing the games I actually play well in. The Basher, while an odd decision on a ranged, was just a late purchase out of desperation. I dropped my wand for it so no big deal. Just so bummed to have lost this one. |
