So I've grown quite the attachment to Batrider. He's a freaking blast to play. I had to play him as a support last game but it was still fun. It seems I enjoy playing Heroes that are difficult to fit into teamcomps (Phoenix, Batrider, Slardar) because of course I would...

Batrider's a pretty good mid or offlane. His problem is that he doesn't really do any damage so you have to account for that with the rest of your team. That awful Storm/Earth/Jugg/Bat/Doom game was partially awful because only Jugg could do any damage.

Also I have given up on Earth Spirit until they unbreak that Q.

Also also I noticed this yesterday:

My KDA is entirely your faults for making me support.

It's not even the heroes (here, here, here), I just can't play the role.

It's not even the heroes, I just can't play the role.
Crash course guide to how I play support:

~Pick support with reliable CC. SD, Rubick, Sand King... fuck it, if you can get Chaos Knight to work without tearing your hair out over his godawful nonexistent mana pool, he works.
~Buy courier (30 gold cheaper than the wards huehuehue), tangos, stick, 3 branches. Smoke if you think you need it. Head to safelane.
~Go scout the rune. Take the powered-up bounty rune because you're the support so you need gold and experience to gank better. Run back to lane just in time to fail the block because it's too damn far to walk. Hide behind the trees.
~When lane equilibrium establishes, immediately spam pings on the squishiest enemy hero in the lane, regardless of if your teammates are ready to gank or not. Run in and throw down your CC to buy teammates time to catch up and unload their shit on that hero too.
~Your gank probably failed, but you created space. Immediately re-attempt the gank when the second wave comes in.
~Hopefully by now you've managed to secure first blood from your carry. Go buy boots from the sideshop instead of buying a courier upgrade or something useful and leave the lane. Because you've scored first blood that lane is won and can be subsequently ignored for the next 10 minutes.
~By now it's probably 1:30 or so. Get the 2:00 rune if available and gank mid regardless of what it is. You probably lack the tools to get that job done considering you're level 2 trying to gank someone who's level 4-5. Best-case scenario it somehow works. Second-best case scenario is that your mid dies in the gank and you can get some sweet solo XP and gold.
~Proceed to gank the offlane (probably about 3:00, possibly 4:00 if you left the safelane too late). This is the key gank. It doesn't matter if your offlane is some dumb shit like offlane Treant vs. Shadow Shaman/Juggernaut/AA, someone in that opposing duo/trilane is at half health I guarantee. You and the offlane should be able to net you a second kill. Go buy TP scrolls, finish wand, and MAYBE some sentries if you have leftover gold.
~Safelane has probably somehow managed to fuck up a 1-kill lead, probably because you left the lane and the loss of reliable CC in that lane means the offlaner can eat your carry alive now without any sort of pressure. But you're 2-0 (3-0?) so you're doing well. Head back to the offlane to leech more XP and kill their underleveled trilane. Get your mid to join in on this shit too. Always carry 2 TP scrolls - they're invaluable for TPing to a lane that has nobody in it. Run around anywhere you see enemy heroes because worst-case scenario you can nab gold nobody else is going to get. Scan the minimap for creeps that are going to run into your unattended tower pretty soon, and get those.

I only really have the early game down pat. Ghost Scepter and Blink Dagger are luxury items but you should be spending 60-80% of your gold on Sentries to deward shit. Typically my inventory looks like:

1. Wand
2. Sentries
3. Observers
4. TP Scrolls
5. Smoke (never used)
6. Boots

Then you get rid of Smoke the minute you have money for Blink/Ghost Scepter and you drop Observers the minute you can get the other. Hopefully at least one person on your team got snowballing because lmao @ having meaningful game impact after like 20 minutes when you play the way I do. I can't remember the last time I played support and sat in the same lane for more than 2-3 minutes. I thank you guys for putting up with that because lord knows the actual babysitting aspect is completely gone from me. I'd like to try actually attempting the babysitter support, probably just stacking camps and stuff, but I have more fun doing the roaming.

I went through our Dotabuff's and made a rough list of our most played positions according to where we usually play the top 10 most played heroes for everyone. I grouped four and five together because we don't usually distinguish between them anyway, and it would've been impossible to know which one you play more. Yeah, sometimes you might play Sniper mid or something like that, but for the most part it breaks down like:

LB:
1-1 (Sniper)
2-2 (QoP, DP)
3-1 (Tide)
4/5-6 (Lich, Lion, AA, Ogre, Bane, Abaddon)

Dwest:
1-1 (Veno)
2-0
3-0
4/5-9 (Phoenix, WR, Venge, Lina, CM, WD, Lion, Ogre, Dazzle)

Ghost:
1-3 (Sven, Sniper, Luna)
2-2 (Sky, Silencer)
3-0
4/5-5 (WD, Shaman, Omni, Lion, SK)

Oli:
1-0
2-2 (Tinker, Kunkka)
3-1 (Clock)
4/5-7 (Earth Spirit, Rubick, Shaman, Tusk, SD, Disruptor, CM)

Me:
1-4 (Slark, PA, Ember, Clinkz)
2-2 (Nyx, Razor)
3-2 (Phoenix, WR)
4/5-2 (Lion, Lesh)

That makes the totals sum up to:

1-9
2-8
3-4
4/5-29

Which like, what. Yeah, the last one is two put together so it's obviously gonna be bigger, but those two are more than half the entire total. There isn't really a conclusion to this, since it's not like this is honestly a very revealing factoid since it's only taking 10 heroes per person into account, but it's still weird.

Side fun facts, shared top ten heroes are:
Sniper (LB, Ghost)
Lion (LB, Dwest, Ghost, me)
Ogre (LB, Dwest)
Phoenix (Dwest, me)
WR (Dwest, me)
CM (Dwest, Oli)
WD (Dwest, Ghost)
Shaman (Ghost, Oli)

Which makes the unique hero spread:
LB-7 (Lich, AA, QoP, Bane, Abaddon, Tide, DP)
Dwest-4 (Venge, Lina, Dazzle, Veno)
Ghost-6 (Sky, Sven, Omni, Silencer, Luna, SK)
Oli-8 (Tinker, Earth Spirit, Rubick, Tusk, SD, Clock, Disruptor, Kunkka)
Me-7 (Slark, Nyx, PA, Ember, Clinkz, Razor, Lesh)

So I guess where I'm going with this is actually: What do you consider your signature heroes? Both as in heroes you play constantly and enjoy, and also in that not many other people (at least not our stack) play? I'm asking because I feel like it's not really represented by our top 10's. I don't associate Ghost with Sven at all anymore, but I do think of Dwest with Batrider, and that's the opposite of how it looks.

I think mine right now would be Slark, Nyx, Clinkz, and Lycan. I haven't been playing Slark that much recently but that's a lot because I don't love Slark taking farm in a trilane and also because I don't want to be this guy. Nyx is probably my most played within the last like month or two because I worked diligently to knock PA out of my top 3 and he's just the greatest in general. Clinkz is sorta just my safest go-to, since he has like almost a lot of my records (note that those four records are from three different games (despite only having a 1.89 overall KDA)). Lycan is cool because I hate when people enjoy playing Dota but I love winning and also wolves are cool.

Witch Doctor is the hero I play most and my best. I am good with sky and I love him the most, but he isn't a guy I pick as regularly as I do with Witch Doctor. my signature heroes are probably Witch Doctor, Skywrath Mage, and Shadow Shaman.

I guess my signature safelane would be Weaver. I don't play him a ton because I'm rarely safelane but he's super fun and has great survivability, which is key for me. Especially when it comes to my signature support, Phoenix. I love Phoenix for the survivability and the utility he provides. The Ult isn't super reliable but I feel like it's underrated when it comes to a teamfight. I suppose my signature mid would prolly be Batrider since I play so few mids, and they're infrequent. I mean, I *can* OD or Sniper or Magnus but they're even more infrequent than Bat. But yeah, those are my best guesses, I suppose. I play a lot of supports.

I figure my top hero list isn't totally inaccurate as far as naming my most preferred heroes at this time. I would argue that CM and Shadow Shaman are remnants of old days when I was playing support a lot more than usual, but I haven't cast them aside completely - I just find Rubick/SD/Earth Spirit to be much more fun and if I'm enjoying the hero I'm playing, I'll do better. I used to be big on Disruptor but eventually settled into that trinity and shelved him - but I have been playing him more as of late because he's versatile and very fun as well. Support Tusk is fun but the more I play him, the more I realize he can't be slapped into any teamcomp and work his magic, and if the game goes on too long then his usefulness feels like it absolutely nosedives. Still a blast.

Good old Tinker. I don't want him displaced from that #1 spot (which is hard because I adore playing Earth Spirit) but that isn't hard because he's my typical mid laner. Puck, Storm Spirit, Zeus, Invoker, Pudge, etc. - they're all fun but I like putting the time into getting better at Tinker. I wouldn't necessarily say he's far and away my best hero - I play a very greedy style with him, so my KDA may be high but I tend to starve my team to achieve that result. But there's just something about playing him, left hand crossing across the keyboard (I really need to remap my item hotkeys off of the numpad but there are so few keys remaining), spells flying everywhere and health bars dropping, that gets me going. The only dull moment playing him is when I die. I can say pretty securely that I'm a Tinker main but I still have a long way to go with him.

Favorite offlaners are Clock/Timber for sure, with Elder Titan rising in the ranks as the #3. Timber's 5-0 winstreak makes me hesitant to play him more because I don't want that to break (I haven't used the 'in the bag' item in ages for the same reason) but he's basically everything I want in an offlaner, where after a few levels he can rise up and fight back against his laners, but isn't farm-reliant to the point where I feel useless if denied it. Clock deserves to be in that list absolutely.

I'm surprised to learn Kunkka is in a tie for that 10th spot. Three of those games are stupid dinky Support Kunkka games (which I'm 0 for 3 in winning). I like the hero and all but I didn't think I played so much of him. Typically if I shoot for a mid it's going to be Tinker and for safelanes I don't think Kunkka provides enough sustained DPS to necessitate that kind of protected farm. My preferred safelaners tend to be Spectre, TB, Chaos Knight... and I don't exactly play them that often.

I think if I had to revise my T10 (not necessarily in order of preference) it'd be:

Tinker
Earth Spirit
Rubick
Shadow Shaman
Shadow Demon
Tusk
Clockwerk
Disruptor
Crystal Maiden
Invoker/Earthshaker/Kunkka

Tinker
Earth Spirit
Rubick
Shadow Demon
Tusk
Clockwerk
Disruptor
Timbersaw
Elder Titan
Spectre/Invoker

So guys. Don't play Weaver if there's an Axe and a Techies. It's a bad idea. Trust me.

Also, Kunkka said at the end 'Weaver is literally useless'. I know I didn't play super well, but come on. That's just douchey.

I had been thinking about heroes in relation to at what period during the game they do the best at and when they fall off. So here is how I've always seen it

remember that this doesn't necessarily mean these heroes ON do well where I have them listed it. it means this is where they play the best at.

Early game:

Strength: Treant Protector, Undying, Night Stalker

Agility:

Intelligence: Crystal Maiden, Shadow Shaman, Chen, Keeper of the Light, Lich

Mid Game:

Strength: Earth Shaker, Kunkka, Beastmaster, Dragon Knight, Clockwerk, Omniknight, Huskar, Brewmaster, Io, Centaur Warrunner, Tusk, Elder Titan, Earth Spirit, Phoenix, Pudge, Sand King, Tidehunter, Spirit Breaker, Abaddon

Agility: Drow Ranger, Mirana, Vengeful Spirit, Riki, Bounty Hunter, Gyrocopter, Lone Druid, Bloodseeker, Razor, Venomancer, Viper, Weaver, Nyx

Intelligence: Puck, Windranger, Zeus, Lina, Tinker, Jakiro, Silencer, Ogre Magi, Rubick, Disruptor, Skywrath Mage, Oracle, Bane, Lion, Witch Doctor, Necrophos, Warlock, Queen of Pain, Pugna, Dazzle, Leshrac, Dark Seer, Batrider, Ancient Apparition, Shadow Demon, Visage, Techies

Late Game:

Strength: Sven, Tony, Alchemist, Timbersaw, Bristleback, Legion Commander, Axe, Slardar, Wraith King, Lifestealer, Doom, Lycan, Chaos Knight, Magnus

Agility: Anti-Mage, Juggernaut, Morphling, Phantom Lancer, Sniper, Templar Assassin, Luna, Ursa, Naga Siren, Troll Warlord, Ember Spirit, Shadow Fiend, Faceless Void, Phantom Assassin, Clinkz, Broodmother, Spectre, Meepo, Slark, Meduas, Terrorblade

Intelligence: Storm Spirit, Nature's Prophet, Enchantress, Enigma, Death Prophet, Invoker, Outworld Devourer

I disagree on a few, but not majorly and most can be argued either way anyways.

I'd say Mirana is an early game hero. She's at her best when she's successfully ganking with her arrow.

Templar Assassin is probably more of a mid-game hero. One of her big advantages is the huge attack increase granted by her ability, but that advantage isn't nearly as potent late game, and she doesn't stack up that well to other late game carries.

I think Alchemist is probably a mid-game hero. I think his main advantage is his ability to get an early gold advantage due to his passive. Now, he's stronger late as a hero, but you're probably going to pick the six slotted Medusa, Void, Juggernaut, or whoever over the six slotted Alchemist. He's kind of in-between mid and late game.

Axe is one of the few I disagree with a lot. He's not a late game hero at all. He's probably strongest whenever he gets his blink dagger, which will be the early/mid game. The hurt from his goddamned twirls falls off, and at that point he's basically best for his pretty limited AOE disable.

I think Drow is probably best late game. She struggles to stay alive without extremely good positioning without a few significant items.

I still think Phantom Assassin is a mid/late hero. 3 of her 4 abilities are completely counter-able with items. She has no mobility in a fight without her W, which is countered by BKB, and the lack of mobility in a fight is what really separates her from a lot of the other late game hard carries. Sniper, Phantom Lancer, Void, Anti-Mage, and whoever else more easily switch from target to target with their mass amounts of damage. It's not the only factor, but it's definitely one of them.
