Haven't done a "what have I listened to recently" post in quite some time. Mostly due to laziness, partly due to wanting to make a mixtape thread and not wanting to completely undermine my mix before someone got it with such a post. So yeah, this is gonna be kind of long.

Nightwish - Imaginaerum
Because this post would be incomplete without it.

London Philharmonic Orchestra - The Greatest Video Game Music
This too.

Bjork - Post
I realize now that I actually had Paal's old mixtape (I rarely delete music), so I had "It's Oh So Quiet" from that album. Idk why I didn't fall in love with it then. However, it was "Hyperballad" that made me realize how kickass Bjork is.

I think I mentioned my two fave songs from it, but the whole thing is pretty awesome. I also have listened to Debut, Vespertine, Medulla, and Homogenic, but this IMO is the best of the albums I've mentioned.

The Dresden Dolls - s/t
Yet another group I've listened to more than one album from. Again, I just picked their best album. Included "Girl Anachronism" in my mixtape because it's so damn intense and awesome, but "Half Jack", "Coin-Operated Boy", "The Jeep Song", and really everything else is good at least.

Tegan and Sara - The Con Demos
I'd already own this, but Amazon likes charging $10 for each of their albums. I don't get it. Anyway, these are pretty good demos and the only real difference between them and the actual songs is they aren't as polished. They retain a sort of raw sound.

Trombone Shorty - For True
Amazon closed out 2011 with a daily deal on this album. Being a New Orleans native and all, I can dig it. I haven't listened to it enough to truly absorb it or understand what's going on (what can I say, I dunno a lot on jazz), but it's rather easy to hear that he's a pretty talented artist.

Also listened to Backatown, which I think is probably a better work than this. Both are still good though.

El-P - I'll Sleep When You're Dead
Forgot High Water was his jazz album (which I should listen to) and so I didn't listen to this when it was recommended. I derped. >.> Anyway, this is almost as good as Fantastic Damage. "Poisenville Kids" is almost as memorable as "DeLorean", in large part due to an amazing performance from Cat Power.

Speaking of which, idk where to start with her. :/

Britney Spears - Baby One More Time
Haters are gonna hate, but nearly every song on this album is and was great. Her new shit sucks though and I don't know why last.fm recommends it over this pop masterpiece.

Delain - Lucidity
Pretty decent Nightwish ripoff. More of a gothic sound than anything else, though, which I suppose Nightwish came closest to with Century Child or Once. April Rain is a generic, uninspired album from them; I'd stay away from it.

Hail Mary Mallon - Are You Gonna Eat That
The new Aesop Rock side project. Pretty much every song here is at least listenable, with "Table Talk" and "Garfield" being two of the best IMO. There are no bullshit skits/interludes. Fuck, I hate that shit.

The National - Boxer
You know, I thought High Violet was great. Okay, it still is, but Boxer is far more... I guess the word is "rock-esque". It's more straight-forward, easier to digest, and overall the catchiest of their albums that I've heard. I'd submit "Brainy" as my favorite track.

Janelle Monae - The ArchAndroid
I know, so 2010. But damn, this is a great pop album. It's not like Ke$ha or LMFAO in that you can just throw it in at parties and expect people to know it, but I think it's every bit as catchy.

Kate Bush - 50 Words For Snow
Just listened to this on a lark. Not like I had ever really heard of her or like last.fm/anyone recommended her to me. Anyway. This is hauntingly beautiful music and I'll probably find a way to give this a more proper listen than what I gave it. Playing a game and listening to something like this does not work.

First Aid Kit - The Big Black and the Blue
I have a friend who's fairly obsessed with this group, and folk in general as of late. I'm not a particularly huge fan of much folk outside of The Decemberists (more specifically The Crane Wife, didn't care much for The King Is Dead), but this was a damn good album. Perhaps it's the female vocals, which everyone knows I'm a sucker for.

M83 - Hurry Up We're Dreaming
the xx - s/t
Drake - Take Care
Wale - Ambition
I'd rather not rag on music in these posts (half the reason I like posting here is to post what I'm enjoying), but I tried each of these albums and gave up after five songs at the most. The first two albums were more so boring than bad, Drake sucks asscock, and Wale is just another meh rapper.

Lykke Li - Wounded Rhymes
Pretty sure I have Youth Novels on this laptop, but I couldn't get through that shit for some reason. This album was 10x better. I'd have to say "Rich Kid Blues" was easily the highlight.

MIA - Arular
We all heard of her after Paper Planes was EVERYWHERE (with good reason, it's awesome), but this was her first album, and I daresay it was as good as Kala, if not better.

Skrillex - Bangarang EP
I don't get the love for this. I suppose it was *decent*, but I far preferred Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites. *shrugs*

Danger Mouse - Rome
I have another friend who swears this was the album of 2011. He knows me well enough to know which album I'd really argue for, but comparing Imaginaerum to this is comparing oranges to apples. Imaginaerum is, as usual for Nightwish, over the top and epic, whereas Rome seems to be a concept album that is more focused on creating an atmosphere. Regardless, I like atmospheric music like this. It's gorgeous and it has a lot going on. Great album, easily worth my $5.

Cage - Hell's Winter
And the same friend who recommended Rome to me shared this with me. Really, he's pestered me to listen to Cage for a long while now. >.> Anyway, this is a pretty sweet album. I loved Grand Ol Party Crash and Left It to Us, the latter featuring El-P and Aesop Rock, two of my absolute favorite rappers.

Silversun Pickups - Seasick
Apparently these songs were gonna be on Swoon but were cut for some reason. I don't see why; they're all great songs. Surely they could have been included as a bonus or some shit. Whatever, we can listen to them now, which is win.

Cynic - Carbon-Based Anatomy
Really this is the title track and five miscellaneous Cynic songs. However, the title track is FUCKING AWESOME, probably one of Cynic's best songs yet. It's so hauntingly gorgeous, which sounds weird for a metal song, but that's the best way to describe it. It makes up for the five meh songs, easily.

Hyperballad is pretty kickass. Björk is the artist that got me into more electronic music. I've never actually listened to an entire album, just a little here and there on spotify, but I gotta agree with you, Post is the best one, and then Debut comes in second.

Are Lykke Li Norwegian?

Then you should listen to all of Post. =p

As for your question, Lykke Li is Swedish apparently. *shrugs*

I hated The xx's album so much. I will never understand why it got such good reviews when it came out.

"Right In" and "Bangarang" have the sexiest bass drops ever and you know it.

Close enough!
They're name means happy, so it was either that or something weird.
And yeah, I should probably listen to all of Post, probably will if I ever feel like listening to some chill electronica.
Is Jóga on Post too? *checks* Nope, on Homogenic, well whatever.

*edit*

Should probably post what I've been listening to lately too!

I've been listening to quite a bit of Power Metal lately, which reminds me that I should probably check out some Nightwish too!

Been listening to Gamma Ray (the album "Somewhere Out in Space" is fucking EPIC), Stratovarius (Visions is epic), some HammerFall, Blind Guardian, Helloween, Sonata Arctica and sum o' dat Gaia Epicus. Definitely one of my favourite metal genres along with Thrash, Melodeath and Progressive Metal.

Downloaded (I am a pirate =[ ) "Nightfall in Middle-Earth" by Blind Guardian, good shit. Got some other albums by them to recommend, Ro?
Well any good power metal album in general would be fantastic.

The edit doesn't like ó and ö.

I'm more into the symphonic side of the genre. Bands like Sonata Arctica and Stratovarius do fuck all for me.

I'd recommend bands like Kamelot (ignore their work before The Fourth Legacy; it's not that good), Epica, After Forever, that sort of thing. >.>

As for Blind Guardian, I'd recommend A Night at the Opera, At the Edge of Time, and Imaginations From the Other Side. If you like those, try the rest. A Twist in the Myth is probably their most divisive album, but even it has its moments.

Disturbed - The Lost Children. B-Sides? Really? This set of songs are true, down and dirty Disturbed, and some of them are way better than what made each of the albums. "Hell", "Monster", "Old Friend", and "Parasite" are sick.

More Shinedown. I now like pretty much everything from Leave A Whisper and Sound Of Madness. (havent bought Us And The yet) Not to mention the new single, "Bully." Really like the transition into the chorus on this one. And of course the powerful choruses that make Shinedown great. This song is easily a 10/10. I'll find a link real quick.

Anybody got some suggestions for some good 80's doom/thrash metal bands? Mainly Doom, since I still need a bit of catching up to do with thrash.

Doom Bands I know
Pentagram
Saint Vitus
Witchfinder General
Trouble
Candlemass
Pagan Altar

Not gonna name any thrash since I know too many to name

Also if it helps, Pentagram is my favorite doom band and I find Saint Vitus' Born Too Late album to make me want to shoot myself from the lyrics

And Overkill, Anthrax, and Toxik right now are my three favorite thrash bands
