I finally got Sybreed's new album in the mail on Saturday. It's probably their heaviest album aince the debut. It's straight up Sybreed badassery. Love it. Right now I'm oistening to Sylosis. Balls to the wall thrash metal. Really awesome. They are supposed to play with Devin and Fear Factory next Sunday, so I'm trying to get familiar with their material. The poster (on Devin fb page) says Sylosis will play with them, but it only says + Fear Factory on the ticket page. Hopefully Sylosis does play too. |

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009XTXLD..._rd_i=163856011 Last day to get this at $4, which is always an amazing price. Not really in the mood for a full review, but some thoughts anyway. -I get that Halos and Mass Effects and the like are the games that will propel sales of an otherwise niche album like this, and they definitely have some good music (the Halo track from the first album was amazing), but I don't think it would do much harm to offer a few more songs from lesser-known games. I'm not saying "make it half songs from obscure games", but 2-4 selections an album wouldn't hurt. -The song selection is weaker than the first album. I suppose part of that was that it was a new series and they used more of the songs/themes most gamers would consider "classics" on that album, but even disregarding that there are some weak songs here. Not really a fan of the Mass Effect or Super Metroid selections, myself. There are still gems here. The Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Chrono Trigger songs are marked improvements from their in-game versions. The Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Skyrim, Sonic the Hedgehog, Luigi's Mansion, Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, and Diablo 3 songs are all very good songs. -One Winged Angel is hella overrated. It's not bad by any means, but neither is it anywhere near as mind-blowing as the internet (well, more like "kids whose first JRPG was FFVII") would have me believe. I've heard plenty of better final boss themes. Perhaps this is just a bad rendition of it, who knows. -Still Alive is weird. The vocals are very good, but the style does not fit the song or the game at all. I definitely think the original vocalist and Sara Quin were better fits for their versions. -Overall, still definitely worth your $4. I just wish this series would diversify a little bit and offer more lesser-known songs, so it's less "Greatest Songs From Games We All Know" and more "Greatest Video Game Music". |

DAYUM. @Ro's song. That was pretty damn interesting. When the song first started, I thought wait what? Where have I heard this before? And then I realised it was "To One Far Away" by Mercyful Fate. Nice mixture, surprised that it worked that well. @Vieira My nipples were hard as fuck. 'nuff said. |

Idk if I'd be surprised... this is a guy who dropped multiple metal acts within a minute of one of his songs, and his current tour is called "Heavy Metal Kings". I'm just saying. That said, I love Ill Bill. >.> EDIT: Also, Vieira's song is gorgeous. |

Everyone and his dog knows Ke$ha, so I'd rather not do a full-blown review. But I'd like to post some thoughts on her new album Warrior anyway, so yeah. You get a post. -Ke$ha was saying this was going to be more of a rock album. This album definitely has rock elements, especially in a song like "Dirty Love" (featuring Iggy Pop, which struck me as lolwut), but for the most part it's a pop album with even more electronic influence than Animal/Cannibal had. I'm not saying it's bad or anything; I'm just saying it's not what Ke$ha had led us to expect. -The ballads have at least gotten better. I always skipped songs like "Hungover" because they weren't good at all. They're still not what you listen to Ke$ha for, but at least you can listen to "Wonderland" and "Love Into the Light" without reflexively hitting the skip button. On that topic, I think "Love Into the Light" is a great closing track: beautiful, soothing, and the lyrics are less trashy than you'd expect of a Ke$ha song. The auto-tune/whatever vocal effect that is might annoy, but honestly idgaf. -One of the few knocks I have on this album is that you will definitely get sick of the words "beautiful", "crazy", and perhaps "tiger". Holy shit are they overused. I get the purpose of hooks and all, but some songs feel like their only word is crazy or beautiful. -And of course, the catchier, poppier songs are still top-notch. "Warrior" is a great opening track and one of the album's strongest, "Die Young" will become that new ubiquitous single you cannot escape, "Dirty Love" is a great blend of rock and pop, and it wouldn't surprise me to see "Supernatural" be a single in the future because it has a great chorus. Overall all the more upbeat tracks are all quite good. -There's a reason the bonus songs on the Deluxe edition are bonus songs instead of proper tracks: They aren't as good. I'm not sure there's a song amongst the four that I'd actually regularly listen to. Maybe "Out Alive" or "Gold Trans Am" on a good day, but meh. They just aren't great tracks, so I wouldn't call the Deluxe version a must-have. |
