I haven't really done a music update in forever.

Around the end of May I got Dark Tranquillity's new album "Construct" in the mail. It's gotten insane response from critics, and with good reason I think. It's a really solid record that captures the calm, heavy and beautiful sides of the modern DT very well. If you liked stuff like "Haven" and "Final Resistance" you'll probably like this a lot too. I guess I'd describe it as a nice blend between "We are the Void" and "Haven" or something like that. It's pretty hard to put my finger on it.

By Kevin's (Outlaw) recommendation I picked up Ihsahn's "After". Holy. Fuck.
That was my reaction to it. What a masterpiece. Jørgen Munkeby (the mastermind behind the Norwegian Shining) put down some sexy sax lines on most of the songs on the album, and they fit really well. It has a very heavy feeling, but at the same time it's incredibly mellow and beautiful. It's just the perfect extreme prog metal album.

I've also been listening loads to Pantera, realising they're fucking killer and have music that doesn't stop at "Walk" or "Cowboys from Hell".
Fucking killer band, and I guess it's metal's pride from the '90s.

Lots of Asking Alexandria, their new record From Death To Destiny leaked online so I have heard it (albeit the unmastered versions) and blessthefall has some new songs out for their new record Hollow Bodies coming in August as well. Will be doing reviews of both records so be looking for those! "Deja Vu" by blessthefall. You are most welcome.

So. Yesterday was a day where both Dream Theater and Haken released new material.

The Enemy Inside
Pareidolia

Personally, I think Haken's was the better song by quite some distance.

Just heard the first track off of avenged sevenfolds new album, "hail to the king" was the song name. While its technically decent, it definitely sounds different from most of the A7X that I have heard.

Double Post Trolololol

This album. It's pretty damn interesting. Some progressive rock mixed with folk and black metal elements. Also, the first song has a fantastically creepy intro.

It's a freaking killer song. I actually heard it like a month ago and then just instantly pre-ordered Das Seelenbrechen (it means THE CRUSHING OF SOULS btw).

I'm seeing Baroness live tonight, so I've been blasting quite a bit of Baroness lately and in the process grown the like them a lot more.
I always liked their music, but I found it kind of forgettable. But after giving them another few goes I'm really realising how great they are. Definitely pumped for the show tonight!

Silversun Pickups - Carnavas (2006)

Pretty good stuff. The band's rhythm section is most definitely the best part of this album, and there are a lot of good grooves to be found here. The album is too long, though (I find few artists can create a consistently engaging album that hits over 50 minutes in length). It doesn't help that the band places the two weakest songs of the album at the end (both could have been left off completely). "Three Seed" in particular is a complete and utter bore. There aren't many highlights on the album, but it's listenable throughout. Lyrics are complete throwaways.

Bruce Springsteen - The Ghost of Tom Joad (1995)

Another album that's too long for its own good. This is basically a sequel to his earlier album, Nebraska, which also happens to be a better album in most ways. That's not to say that this album is bad, because Nebraska is amazing, but they're easy to compare and this one falls flat in comparison. The lyrics are still a high point, but he seems to be going through the motions musically here on a few songs. There are a couple of great songs here, though, like the title track and "Youngstown". Still, he released an album 13 years before this that does everything this album does and better.

Iceage - You're Nothing (2013)

This is really the best album I've heard from 2013 and it's not particularly close. They draw on both hardcore punk and post-punk in healthy doses, and they fit together very well for a sound that I haven't really heard before. The singer is undeniably punk while managing to not sound like Derivative Punk Singer #3,201,895. I think they even bring some piano in a few songs and it actually added to the songs. They're a very cool band and this album is fantastic. If you can get past the chaotic sound on the surface, there are a lot of very cool grooves and melodies in these songs.

Bruce Springsteen - The Promise (2010)

After just saying that two albums that were between 50 and 55 minutes in length were too long, here's an album that's 88 minutes long that's fucking amazing. Long story short, Bruce wrote a boatload of songs in the later 1970's due to contract disputes with his manager that kept him out of studio. The sessions where these songs were eventually recorded lead to the creation of Darkness on the Edge of Town in 1978 and some of The River in 1980. However, there were still a whole bunch of songs that didn't happen to fit the themes of these two albums that were recorded and never released, until recently.

The thing that really sticks out about these songs is just how good they sound. There are so many subtle "textures" added to pretty much every song on the album that just puts them on another level, and thankfully it's not to the point where they feel bloated like Use Your Illusion or Bat Out of Hell or anything. This is all done very tastefully. These are probably the most "basic" songs that Springsteen has ever written. Everything written after this album has pretty straightforward instrumentation, but the lyrics put them on another level that keep them out of the "fun rock n' roll song" category, and everything before was too elaborate on an instrumental level to fit that category. These songs, though, fit that bill. You'd think that would be a bad thing, but given the subtle layers of textures alluded to early, these are far from stale and sound incredible. And it's also nice to hear music where Springsteen and the E Street Band sound like they're having fun for the first time in a long time. Springsteen's political lyrics are great, but sometimes a song like "Because the Night", "Ain't Good Enough for You", or ""Someday (We'll Be Together)" are nice, too. The production is fantastic, too, again lending to how good these songs sound. In my opinion, this is one of the best albums Springsteen ever released, which automatically places it as one of my favorite albums ever. And as a side note, sometimes I get feels listening to this album thinking that it's probably the last time we'll hear "new" studio work featuring the great Clarence Clemons.

The Killers - Hot Fuss (2004)

This album is definitely The Killers at their best. Too bad their best still isn't all that great. The album starts off strong with pretty much every hit from the album being placed at the beginning. "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine" and "Somebody Told Me" are probably the two best songs from the album. After a strong start, it descends into consistent mediocrity through the last six or so songs. As someone who prefers to do album listens, that's a pretty big strike against it and a reason I rarely come back to this album.

The Tallest Man on Earth - The Wild Hunt (2010)

This is such a damn good album. The obvious comparison to The Tallest Man on Earth is Bob Dylan, due to the folk music and especially the vocal delivery. The Tallest Man on Earth has his differences, though. Lyrically, The Tallest Man on Earth's music sounds good, but you're not quite sure if he's really trying to say anything at all. This isn't a particularly good thing, but the words sound nice together so it could be a lot worse. The music is also a lot faster and upbeat than something you'd expect from Bob Dylan, which will probably win over people who find folk music boring. This is not boring. At all. I love this album and I'm glad I kind of randomly came into contact with it on another forum years ago. The Tallest Man on Earth is one of the best musicians around right now. The singing may turn some off, but I love the singing and the guitar playing is wonderful. Knowing you guys, you may even like The Tallest Man on Earth better than Bob Dylan (even if it is blasphemy).
