Came across this mashup of Two Door Cinema Club's "What You Know" with Ellie Goulding's "Stay Awake". It's really well done, I've heard someone say Ellie Goulding is basically made for mashups and after having this on repeat for the past few hours I can't say I disagree. The guy's Soundcloud has a few good ones as well, this is probably my favorite of his though. |

Bond and Trans-Siberian Orchestra. They each have songs that I can just put on repeat and be completely content. |

Bruce Springsteen - Wrecking Ball (2012) This is only my second time listening to this album and the first time in a few months. I think I liked it a lot more this time. None of the tracks give off the impression of being throwaways put in simply to take up space. Every song sounds very different from the next, and the album in general sounds different from everything Springsteen has done before. This is the first real "protest album" that Springsteen's ever written. His lyrics have been largely political for a long time now, but this is his first time sounding angry about the situation rather than simply observational. In general the music sounds like a mix of folk and country with an angry punk rock edge to it and some modern music practices mixed in. Best songs are "Death to My Hometown" and "We Are Alive", but I really wouldn't say there's a weak song on the album. Bloc Party - Four (2012) Probably better than their critically acclaimed debut, Silent Alarm, which I wasn't much of a fan of at all. This album has a harder rock edge to it, which I appreciate, though the music is still pretty largely forgettable. The musicianship on the album is tight and doesn't sound bad, but yeah there really isn't anything here that makes me want to come back. There are also like two or three skits at the end of songs that are cringe-worthy bad. Bloc Party really just isn't a very good band. The National - Trouble Will Find Me (2013) This album sounds good. It really does. The textures are lush and nice to listen to. The singing sounds good. The songs sound good. So why am I not loving this album? It sounds a tad bit samey. It's not necessarily that every song sounds like the others, but the overall mood they evoke are very similar. The album just needs a catchy single that pumps you up or a real rocker or something to just shake things up. The album is just filled with pretty and nice sounding songs. There's nothing particularly wrong with that, but it's not exactly ideal for a full album listen, either. Paul McCartney - New (2013) It's like a bunch of old musicians got together and decided to just make the best albums they've made in years lately. Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and now Paul McCartney are releasing awesome music over the past few years and I, for one, welcome our musical dinosaurs coming back with a vengeance. McCartney's new album is a pretty straightforward rock album with very modern production values and techniques that make it sound relevant, and that combined with some of the best songwriting he's done in a while make this album a real treat. He's got some good rockers here ("Save Us"), good ballads ("Early Days"), and some of the quirky Paul McCartney we all love ("On My Way to Work"). "Appreciate" is the only song on the album I didn't like much at all. I listened to this album last week but have spent the past week going back to some of the more memorable tracks on YouTube, which I only usually do for albums I greatly enjoy. My personal album of 2013 (so far). |

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII OST Out of respect for people who want no spoilers, I won't use any song names (and thus won't be very specific, but oh well). This OST is pretty reminiscent of XIII-2, except it's even more varied than that OST was, which was quite varied. Luckily there's nothing as outright *bad* as Crazy Chocobo and the like. I don't know if I'd say this is better or anything, but it's a really good soundtrack. The final boss theme is probably the most epic song in the Final Fantasy series, though. It clocks in at 13 minutes and checks all the usual "final boss theme" boxes, but it's still a really great song in spite of this color-by-numbers description. There are a good number of other impressive songs on the OST, too. I'd count around 10 in my first listen that I really enjoyed. Can't wait to get this game, obviously. Katy Perry - PRISM I'll just say this: most songs are better than the Brave wannabe, aka Roar. Unconditionally is a better radio single, but that doesn't really take much. By the Grace of God is a beautiful ballad, which isn't really something we hear from Katy Perry. It's also the album's highlight. Birthday probably has the most absurdly catchy lyrics on the album, which makes it a fun listen. All things considered, I found it to be a better effort than Teenage Dream, which I felt was a bit disjointed and weak outside of the various singles. This album has a much better flow to it, though I doubt it'll deliver as many radio hits. Most of the not-singles material here beats that on the previous album, however. Lady Gaga - ARTPOP My gripe with Lady Gaga has always been simple. Outside of the singles, which are admittedly VERY catchy, the rest of her albums are gigantic disappointments. Mid-paced pop does fuck all for me. Either write something people can dance to, write a good ballad, or get the fuck out. Luckily that's all changed here. I don't think there's a particular standout, but that's because pretty much every song is catchy as hell. Do What U Want is probably the album lowlight, but that might be in large part because it sounds rather familiar and bland to me for some reason. I guess Gypsy might be another one. I never really paid attention to the controversy surrounding it, but it's just a meh song. Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP 2 HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Terrible album. Has only one good song, that being Beautiful Pain, and two other listenable songs, those being Rap God and Legacy. Skip everything else, or better yet, just ignore it altogether and stick to the good stuff. I hate it when artists try to re-capture the past, and this is a pretty blatant effort to capture what made him huge all the way back in 2000, but it's not 2000 anymore. A lot of the references felt dated/completely irrelevant to me, but the thing that really gives it away to me is the over-the-top effort to be "controversial". He's not that person anymore. Or maybe I'm just not that kind of listener anymore. I'd include the new M.I.A. here, too, but even though I like it, it's an album that's very out there and hard to describe. Probably because I've never heard anything like the influences she draws upon. |

I went on a bit of a pop binge last night and went through a few albums I've been quite curious about for a while, but kept forgetting about. First off was "Pure Heroine" by Lorde. You've most likely heard the song "Royals" by her (or at least a small part of it on some commecial). The main hit is one of the highlights of the album, but overall the album is really nice and it has a very relaxing vibe. I guess it's very drum and bass focused? I'm not too well versed in pop genres, but that's kind of what I got out of it. Overall I enjoyed it a lot. Definitely something I want to give another listen. The next album was a big Norwegian one, "TRVLS" by Truls. You might have heard his hit single "Out of Yourself" before, it's a really awesome song (definitely the highlight, but that might be because I've heard it a lot before). He has a very special singing style, almost always singing in falsetto and it works very well. This one is also a relaxing album, however it's quite a lot more upbeat than "Pure Heroine". Next on the list was Maria Mena's "Weapon in Mind". You might have heard "Fuck You" (this one is about keyboard warriors insulting her on twitter and she just wanted to vent). She's a very good lyricist and easily one of the greatest pop musicians from Norway. Her songs are always really nice, her voice is fantastic and yeah. She rules. I've always enjoyed her melancholic and very honest style (you can tell she's very down to earth and passionate in interviews). I definitely recommend checking out the album on spotify, it's great. Last on the list was Katy Perry's "PRISM", you've all heard "Roar" so I wont even bother linking it. Personally I really enjoy "Roar" and think it's a fun song. When I saw the tracklist I was a little put off. 16 songs? There's bound to be some filler there. I'm usually not a fan of albums by these huge pop stars and it might have been because I was getting tired, but I stopped listening after "This is How We do It", I just wasn't enjoying it all that much. One album I listened to to a few days ago was Alter Bridge's new album, "Fortress". Monica has been praising it quite a bit, so I finally gave it a listen. I enjoyed Black Bird (their last album) quite a bit so I was pretty excited for it. Its sound is definitely a little heavier, but it's great. I'm going to give it a few more listens. It's just a fun album with a lot of great melodies ad guitar work. Myles Kennedy's voice is fantastic. |

It is indeed quite good. You can view it as either 4 20+ minute tracks, or 42 short tracks. You know, the meaning of everything and all. :P |
