I decided to listen to kmr and downloaded some mixtapes from datpiff and now I'm listening to a lot of rap. Chance, Lil B (who I'm still not sure if I like or not), Odd Future (and Tyler and Earl, fight me), Childish Gambino, Blackalicious.

I'd say out of those, Chance is the best. There are a lot of good mixtapes out there, and if I had to suggest some, OCD: Moosh and Twist has "The Welcome Mat" and "Up Before the World," and even Tech N9ne has "Bad Season," and Immortal Technique has "The Martyr," all of which are worth a listen. Good to see you overstepping your boundaries and trying something new.

I've been listening a lot to the album "Eld" by Enslaved, it's their second album, and it's from 1996 or something like that. It's a really great black metal album, probably my favourite classic album by them.

'Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
'Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
You’re gonna hear me roar"

Fuck yeah bitches.

Coachella day 1 thoughts:

-I don't think I even got on the stream until 5:50 or so. I was grabbing nomz for the stream. In any case, only ZZ Ward kept my attention at all, and even they weren't impressive. I'm convinced these people listen to shit like Flatbush Zombies and A$AP Ferg ironically. The beats are cool, but the lyrics... Yeaaaaaaah.

-Grouplove and Wye Oak failed to impress me in the least. Aloe Blacc was the only one who could keep my attention, mostly by virtue of not being shitty. He's alright but idk, I wasn't feeling it outside of one or two songs.

-I was looking forward to AFI the most of the next three artists, but MS MR and Dum Dum Girls were pretty legit. I'm going to have to check more of their shit out. As far as AFI goes, their set was decent. They played the obvious songs like Silver and Cold, Miss Murder, Medicate, etc, and played at least a couple of others I didn't know. The Leaving Song Pt. 2 was awful and I'll take the studio version every time.

-Bastille... I don't know. They had maybe one or two songs that rose above meh and a bunch of really meh songs. I don't think I'll be listening to more of them. Already said my piece on A$AP Ferg. I HATED GOAT's American Indian-inspired outfits and couldn't watch them for more than a minute at a time. Cultural appropriation is not cool, guys. Didn't care for what little of the music I heard either.

-The Afghan Whigs/HAIM/Kate Nash. Ouch. I would have loved to see all three, but HAIM stole the show here. Kate Nash is a good artist and all, and The Afghan Whigs play something that resembles rock (always appreciated at these!), but HAIM was just on another level.

-Neko Case had a timeslot pretty much to herself, because apparently people want to see a meet and greet with Zedd instead of hearing music, and Woodkid started 25 minutes after her. I tried checking out the other acts but holy shit doooooooooooon't caaaaaaaaaaaaaaare. Neko Case put on a good set as always. Would have liked to hear People Got a Lotta Nerve, but I heard This Tornado Loves You, so I'll accept it.

-Ellie Goulding killed it. The live version of Lights is probably even better than the studio version, which was already catchy as hell. I ascribe this to the guitar part, which had a cool solo and everything. Sick of Anything Can Happen, but literally every other song was good, so I'll live. All in all, I'll probably have to give Halcyon another spin and see if I like it more this time around.

-Didn't care enough to hear anyone from Chromeo to The Cult/Outkast, so this was a Dota break. I just muted Dota and kept listening while playing. Worth it. That said, I regret not switching to Girl Talk because his music sounded like the biggest party ever, but I can rectify this with Spotify (I hope). I would have listened to Carnage if this were Carnage the Executioner (out of Minneapolis), but it was someone else.

-Outkast's set was obviously the shit. I had never heard anything outside of the singles, but most of what I heard was awesome. It's probably cliche to say B.o.B. is amazing at this point, but it was amazing. I switched to The Cult from time to time and managed to catch Love Removal Machine, which was what I wanted to hear most. I would have focused on them more if not competing with Outkast. I'll check out more of their shit after the festival though. Same goes for Martin Garrix and Zedd, who sounded cool but lol @ catching more than snippets of their shit.

Also, Janelle Monae. She's fucking incredible. She showed up for one of their songs and stole the show with her voice/dance moves. I've listened to The Archandroid, which was great, but not the rest of her shit. Going to correct that soon-ish.

tl;dr: Day 1 was awesome as fuck. Hopefully day 2 can be as good/better. I generally see day 3 as a "slow" day because it's Sunday, but I still hope for some good things.

Day 2:

-I missed the entire first group of acts, but I had never heard of White Lies, Bear Hands, or Foxygen. Maybe I missed someone I would have liked, but whatever.

-CHVRCHES was the first act I heard, and they did not disappoint. I was looking forward to their performance a fair bit because I've heard good things. Their music was catchy as fuck and I look forward to actually hearing the studio versions. Ty Segall and Temples were pretty fucking dull, so I switched back to CHVRCHES right away.

-Bombay Bicycle Club was alright, but I stuck with them mostly by default. I like Neko Case, but there are very few artists I like enough at these events to watch twice, unless they had a killer set or I just like their shit. The Head and the Heart was as dull as ever.

-It must have been boredom hour, because City and Colour and Cage the Elephant put me right to sleep. I can't get into that kind of music for the most part. It's a rare group like either of them that I can get into. I switched between them until Washed Out came on, who weren't that good either but were easily better than either of those acts.

-I might have said City and Colour and Cage the Elephant were boring, but Capital Cities and Future Islands were both so bad that they made me close the stream. I don't know how people can get into shit like this. With any luck, I'll avoid Safe and Sound forever. I only reopened it for GTA, which was better, but that isn't saying anything at all. GTA was nothing special but it was listenable.

-LORDE MAH GIRL. She started with Glory and Gore and it couldn't really get any better than that. Her set was good but idk, I might have had overly high expectations for this set. I felt kinda let down afterwards. *shrug* Warpaint was legit and I wish they weren't competing with Lorde for my listening time. I'll have to explore them at a later date. Dillon Francis sounded pretty dope too.

-I was hoping to get into the Pixies' set/their music, but it did absolutely nothing for me. Fatboy Slim wasn't great either, but it was better than The Pixies and likely better than QOTSA, who I didn't even flip on because I never liked them to start with.

-MGMT still bores me to tears. Flame away, Lightning, ghost, and Milk. I tried but I couldn't get into them at all. Empire of the Sun was meh. They sounded like they wanted to be some rock/electronic hybrid but failed pretty hard at both. Pharrell Williams' set started out boring as hell too, but picked up in the second half, with guest appearances by Nelly, Snoop Dogg, Gwen Stefani, amongst others. Drop It Like It's Hot and Hollaback Girl made the teenager in me pretty happy.

-I listened to Pet Shop Boys before Nas came on, they were meh at best. I think a huge part of it for me was the sub-par vocals. Without the vocals the music would have been more enjoyable, but even without vocals it still wouldn't be great. I was waiting for Nas, who was delayed for some reason. A sound check and/or technical difficulties is my best guess. Once he came on, he killed it. It was the best performance of the night and it wasn't even close. It was one of the best performances of this year's Coachella stream, for that matter. (Apparently he forgot part of One Mic but I don't care; the rest was great.)

tl;dr: Mostly meh, but still some gems. I'm hoping that tomorrow is better than this, but looking at the lineup I'm not sure it will be.

I've been listening to the catalog from As I Lay Dying. I just can't decide which of their albums is the best, it is really mind boggling. Just when I think that "The Powerless Rise" is their best, I listen to "An Ocean Between Us" and get swayed. Also, just began listening to their breakthrough album "Shadows Are Security" and got blown away.... I love these guys, hope Tim's sentence is short and they can resume their careers.

The band has announced a new project, Wovenwar. It doesn't really sound like it will be the same style, but I am going off of a barely there clip. As far as As I Lay Dying actually getting back with Tim once his sentence is up, the band seems to be attempting to distance themselves from him.

I, too, heard about Wovenwar... I can't wait for their single to drop in a few days.
I'm keeping hope that when Tim comes back they still pursue AILD, as they said it is merely "sleeping".

From what I've seen, that post was Tim. The band had no input on it at all, and, iirc, they don't have access to update the website.

Tonight I've been jamming Beyond Creation's album The Aura, and, holy balls, it is some of the best tech death I have ever listened to. Granted, over-produced to hell and back, but that almost seems par for the course for tech death anymore. The one thing that really sets the band apart from literally every other tech death band is the use of a fretless bass that you can actually bloody hear. Sure, Death had fretless bass on Human and Individual Thought Patterns, but this stuff is far beyond anything on those albums.

Enjoy some tech death you fools.
