So me, my sister, and a few friends of ours attended the Fête de la Musique a few days ago and I got to discover and watch a lot of great local bands. I thought I should share them with you guys so here are all the acts we watched that day

The Jireh Calo Project
A female-fronted jazz-fusion band. Some of their songs can be found here and I believe they have an album out now.

Farewell Fair Weather
Another female-fronted jazz-fusion band. Similar to Jireh Calo but personally, I think Jireh has more soul in her voice. Musically, they're still great. Their EP can be found on their FB page.

Sud
How to describe this? They're a rock band with some soul and funk in their music. They had a bad set that consists of slow jams/R&B songs which was boring and gave me a bad impression about them but I checked their other music and they say so otherwise. You can check them out here which also has a download link to their album (for free!)

tide/edit
An instrumental post-rock band. Their set was good at first but then started to get repetitive. Still, check out their Bandcamp.

Jon Attend
Not really a local but whatevz. He's a French DJ who plays lounge/nu-jazz stuff. I guess I like the music he played but it feels really weird to just watch this guy do his thing while everyone else just stood there (except for this one guy who was dancing.)

Pedicab
An alternative rock band that's already pretty well-known here. They did a pretty fun set that was sadly short. Their music shouldn't be that hard to find in Google or YouTube unlike the rest in here.

Motherbasss
Out of all we've watched, this was my favorite. A turntablist/drummer hip-hop duo with a little bit of electronica in it. They don't have much music for downloads/free listening/etc. This is their only music video which can also be found on SoundCloud.

Autotellic
An indie new-wave band who has been getting some popularity recently. You can find them on SoundCloud, Facebook, Bandcamp, YouTube, etc.

Really, I've been listening to too many projects to count, but some goods ones are the newest Brother Ali LP, the Freddie Gibbs and Madlib Project, Murs in general, Black Milk, Milo, Rittz, Sadistik, Black Star, CunninLynguists, and much, much more. Give any of those artists a check if you want, keeping in mind that they are all hip hop artists.

I've been on a hip-hop/rap binge so I'm looking for some recommendations. I'm not too picky about it but I usually prefer ones that are more "music/beat>lyrics", know what I mean?

Well, if you're into beats, then Black Milk's newest project, No Poison No Paradise is perfect. His older projects like Tronic are good too. Murs has two that I really like: Murs 3:16 (9th Edition) and Love and Rockets Vol. 1: The Transformation. These are a little more subdued, but I enjoy Milo's beats on Cavalcade and especially on Things That Happen at Day/Things that Happen at Night. I assume you've heard Chance's Acid Rap, but you might not have so I'll throw that in there. Below the Heavens by Blu & Exile, the beats on both of the Flatbush ZOMBiES projects are pretty solid, and definitely the Pro Era tape Peep: The Aprocalypse. Sorry if this list is too long, I just was throwin' out names. Kmr and Ro might add some that I forgot about, but I'm sure these'll tide you over.

I've been jamming a lot of melodic death metal lately, with the occasional stuff on the even heavier side. Old Arch Enemy (pre-Angela Gossow era), Carcass, At The Gates, a random spattering of bands I never really went out of my way to listen to over the years. Never really realized how little death metal I actually listened to until now.

@crocker I don't know if it's quite what you're looking for, but Jet Age of Tomorrow is a really beat-heavy group (from Odd Future, who everyone here hates I guess so idunno). Actually, they may be closer to just straight electronica than rap, but the occasional song features other Odd Future rappers. Also, all their stuff is free, which is a plus.

Here's a cool song. Here's one with rapping.

Been on a bit of a cool jazz trip lately. There's not much that can compare to just sitting late at night listening to some soothing jazz.

The Google Play radio is absolutely amazing.

@Granskjegg If you haven't already, look up Thundercat. Fantastic newer jazz fusion.

I HAVE RETURNED
Basically still listening to the same stuff I've listened to the past few years lol. As far as "newer" stuff, I've been listening to a lot of Issues, Of Mice & Men, and more Black Tide lately.

Black Tide
I must admit, those guys got really uninteresting after they released their first album. Went from revival thrash metal to generic as fuck metalcore.

Forecastle Roundup!

So as you know, this past weekend I got the opportunity to go to a local music festival with my friends. There were many acts that I saw, but I will only detail which sets I saw the entirety of. The last act of each day is the headliner for that day.

Friday

Friday was actually the best day, having the best lineup.

Mim0sa - I always enjoy seeing a house/electronic musician in concert, and this one was no different. He was pretty standard though, but I think I enjoyed his set even more because I got really high and could feel the bass reverberating throughout my body. He was pretty good.

Gary Clark Jr. - I LOVE Gary Clark Jr., and seeing him in concert was even more amazing. His sound is so perfect for an outdoor venue. Combining funk, jam rock, and even R&B, he blew me away for the full hour and a half. He can really belt it, and he's a fantastic guitarist. Great set.

twenty one pilots - They were good again, but I wasn't feeling them as much as I was when I saw them the first time a couple months ago. I think it's mainly because they did the exact same set. Pretty good overall though, but I won't wanna see them again until they release new music.

Outkast - Oh my God this was fantastic. It's like they had never split up. They gelled so well and played all of the fan favorite songs (like "Hey Ya" and "Ms. Jackson"), as well as my favorite songs (like "B.O.B." and "Rosa Parks"). I was feeling it the entire set, even when they did individual songs from The Love Below and Speakerboxxx. Probably my favorite set of the night.

Saturday

Saturday was the weakest day of the festival.

Spanish Gold - I saw them mainly because the drummer is a Louisville native and played drums for My Morning Jacket, whom I love. However, the vocalist, guitarists, and overall sound was a pretty generic brand of rock music. I really didn't like them too much, and was a little let down considering my high hopes for them. Pretty meh.

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings - Oooooooh, Lord. It's muthafuckin' Sharon Jones. This set was, hands down, the best set of Saturday. They were just so live and got everyone groovin'. That funky old-school R&B sound coupled with the brilliant brass section is enough to get anyone moving. I loved Sharon Jones before, but now I think I have a deeper appreciation for her music.

Band of Horses - I really only saw these guys because a friend wanted to and I had no one else that I wanted to see playing at the same time. I still don't get the appeal of them. They're very subdued, but not really in a good way. They're subdued in an "Oh my God this is so boring I'm falling asleep" sort of way. My other friend and I actually did step out of the crowd for a while and fell asleep on the grass where they were playing. Did not enjoy them at all.

Jack White - I must say, Jack White really surprised me. I had heard some of his solo stuff, and thought some of it was alright, but the songs where he tries to sound country are not my cup of tea. However, he came right out of the gate alive and kept the energy level up the whole time. After the first half of his set, there was a short intermission. Then, he came back out and played some classic White Stripes songs along with other songs he's known for, like "Steady as She Goes." I actually enjoyed this immensely.

Sunday

Sunday was the day that could go either way.

Chrome Sparks - I'm still really iffy on these guys. Sure, atmospheric, ambient music might be novel for a couple of minutes, but I just couldn't handle a full hour of it. Some of their set sounded good, while other parts sounded off or like they weren't even trying. Overall an OK set.

Trampled by Turtles - God, I love Trampled by Turtles, but this set was just a complete let down. I thought that they would be a great live band, but they mainly played their slow stuff as opposed to their faster, more enjoyable in a concert setting stuff. Even while they were playing their faster stuff, I wasn't feeling a whole lot of emotion coming from them. A big disappointment of a set.

tUnE-yArDs - I had no idea what to expect going into this set, as it was mainly word of mouth that made me want to see them. I knew they were eccentric, but I wanted to see it for myself. I was pleasantly surprised when I loved their set. I can really dig their whimsy, as well as their weird, almost tribal percussion coupled with poppy yet off-kilter instrumentation. Also, Merrill Garbus may have a different voice, but there were parts of the set where no one could deny that she can sing. I loved this set.

Flume - Another house artist, but this time with a twist. He samples mainly R&B and soul tracks or vocal clips to make his music, and the resulting sound is something beautiful. He feels a lot more lush than other house musicians that I've heard, and I was dancing during his whole performance. Really would love to see him in concert again if at all possible.

Beck - I didn't know how I felt about seeing Beck, as the extent of my Beck knowledge is "Where It's At," "Loser," and "Gamma Ray." However, like the other two headliners, I really enjoyed this set. I didn't know that Beck draws a lot of musical influence from funk, which is a a genre that I can always get behind. I can't really pick out any song that he played that I didn't like, so that a point to him. Also, he's really weird, but in a good way. He communicates with the audience well and knows how to get them hyped. Overall a great set from Beck.

This weekend was probably the best weekend of my life. I had the most fun that I've had in a while, all while soaking in great music. Here's hoping that next year has an even bigger lineup, with bigger names and a bigger festival experience!

I'm giving Overkill's new album "White Devil Armory" a spin.

It is heavy as shit. I love it.

The album is up on Google Play Music, and probably also Spotify. Give it a spin and do some headbanging, bitches.

Jamming Metallica's Ride the Lightning on its 30th anniversary. Say what you will about the band now, but this album is a classic.

RTL is easily their best album, no doubts about it. Hell, even I love it, and I find 90% of Metallica's music to be boring as hell.

I've only listened to three Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds albums. The two newer ones I've listened to were great. The earlier one I listened to was forgettable but not bad. Decided to listen to one of their middle 90's albums, Murder Ballads, since it's one of their more acclaimed albums.

Two songs in and this may be one of the most horribly corny albums I've ever heard. The lyrical content is basically what you'd expect from the album title, which isn't a good thing. Pretty sure they dropped this terrible bombastic/grandiose sound pretty soon after this album, which is a good thing. Just awful.
