Every time they release a song from Blitz it reminds me that I still need to get Blitz. Then again, I'm beyond far behind on RB DLC

Whelp, next week sees the rerelease of three Blitz singles. No new songs for those of us who bought Blitz.

DLC for 1/8
Foster the People – "Pumped Up Kicks"
Foo Fighters – "These Days"
Maroon 5 ft. Christina Aguilera – "Moves Like Jagger"

Also, Foster the People 01 will be released, containing "Pumped Up Kicks", "Helena Beat", and "Don't Stop (Color on the Walls)", the last two of which were released as singles earlier last year.

I'd have to say the streak is over. 5 years of new weekly releases is still amazing, so as long as Harmonix comes back with new new content next week, I'll be happy.

Meanwhile "Great Balls of Fire" by Jerry Lee Lewis is being released on the RBN. I'll pick that one up.

EDIT: Official word from HMXHenry says that this trend will continue for the next few weeks. He said that they're going to alternate between a week of new songs and a week of Blitz songs until all the songs are released.

He also made mention of a couple new IPs for the year. One is definitely a new Dance Central title, but perhaps a new Rock Band title too? While there was no hint at a new Rock Band title, there was no outright denial of one too. Who knows.

It appears things are worse than what I originally thought.

From what I can infer from HMXHenry's posts on the forums, the future of Rock Band is... uncertain at best. The new DLC will now be released on a bi-weekly schedule, with off weeks containing Blitz songs. HMXHenry tells us that they have 3 months of DLC ready, but every time in the past he's brought that up, he always said 6 months. Those new IPs Harmonix are working on? None of them are Rock Band titles or plastic instrument related. What's more is that HMXHenry, for the first time since I can remember, isn't debunking any talks about Rock Band's imminent demise.

Here's some quotes from HMXHenry.

HMXHenry

1. Why are you releasing Blitz tracks as DLC?

There are a number of reasons why we’re releasing Blitz tracks as DLC. This will be the first time that Wii rockers have had access to these tracks, as Blitz was only available on the Xbox 360 and PS3. Additionally, since the announcement of Blitz, we’ve received a number of vocal requests from members of the community that wanted to pick and choose from singles off the setlist. As we’ve seen with previous Track Pack DLC releases, there is definitely a segment of the community interested in purchasing tracks piecemeal.

2. Will there be any new content available alongside the Blitz singles?

There may be one or two instances where Blitz singles releases are accompanied by previously unreleased content, and there are several Pro Guitar upgrades planned as well. For the most part the Blitz singles will be released by themselves.

3. Are you switching to a bi weekly Blitz schedule because you’re running out of DLC?

We still have some great DLC on the schedule, including the addition of several bands that have not yet appeared in Rock Band, as well as the return of some old favorites. The bi weeks in between Blitz releases will still feature new DLC releases, carrying us well beyond 4,000 total tracks in the library.

4. How long will the bi weekly Blitz releases run for?

The Blitz singles will likely be released in 3-4 song batches every other week over the course of the next 3 months until all 25 songs are available.

5. Why aren’t you releasing all the Blitz songs at once?

Releasing large batches of songs requires a ton of production bandwidth, both for our DLC team and for 1st party testers. Even though these songs were previously available in Blitz, releasing them as singles still requires additional testing and submission time that wasn’t available while developing other titles.

6. Will there be Pro upgrades for the Blitz singles?

We’re planning on adding Pro upgrades for 6 of the Blitz singles. These upgrades should be available to those that have already purchased Blitz, similar to how the Pro upgrades worked for the recent Green Day DLC / GDRB export.

7. What are these new IPs you’re working on? Are any of them RB related / instrument based music games?

Harmonix has several new projects in the works, but unfortunately no Rock Band news at the moment. You can keep posted to HarmonixMusic.com for future project announcements.

My question is, after the blitz singles all come out, are you going to continue to release weekly DLC? Or will it be the end of weekly DLC and start bi-weekly DLC?

As with regular DLC announcements, i.e. announcing weekly rather than monthly or announcing batches of upcoming releases all at once, we try to avoid commenting too far out because the schedule / production / testing / submission can still change. We'll have more info as we get closer to releasing all of the Blitz singles.

Henry, is it possible to know how far out dlc has been planned for? I understand you can't strait up tell us, but if there is any indication of this train coming to a stop, it would be good to know

As I mentioned in a previous post, there is a lot that can happen with DLC on even a week to week basis so we don't like to comment on plans too far out. All I can say right now is what has already been outlined in the announcement and the FAQ, that we have DLC releases lined up for the next 3 months.

Can you tell us if HMX is still intent on pursuing additional songs/bands as DLC, or if this will simply be runout?

We're still in close contact with all labels and have been discussing licensing on a regular basis.

I don't see this as a slowing down of DLC. As it seems, the bi-weekly Blitz releases are not a sign of a slow down, but of Harmonix giving those who couldn't or didn't want to purchase Blitz the opportunity to purchase the content they want.

While we most definitely do want to make these songs available for the people that want them, this should most definitely be seen as a slow down of DLC. The first line in the announcement references a slow down in the DLC production pipeline, so while I totally understand that people want to stay positive, we should all be realistic about the state of things at this point.

If Rock Band DLC does stop piping out in a few months, then what does that mean for the RBN?

RBN releases on the Xbox 360 require little HMX dev time so we don't have any plans to alter that pipeline any time in the near future.

My only real question is, when DLC finally stops and new products are released will the RB Central Server stay up for much longer for continued online play? It would be a shame to lose the ability to rock out with random people on classic tunes.

We don't have any plans to alter server support, store support, or web support at any point in the near future.

As for the new 'secret' projects and stuff. Can you confirm / deny that something along the lines of Rocksmith but drum-centric is in development? Or do I have to wait for the GDC?

As called out in the FAQ, none of the games we're working on are RB or instrument based music games.

Can you please say something that's impossible to interpret as a giant kick in the shorts? =(

It's not an awesome day for announcements, I know. RB has been the focus of most of my waking hours for the last 5 years, so it's no picnic for me either. I hope everyone is aware that this isn't something we did without a lot of forethought and planning. We love RB every bit as much as all of you and want to do everything we can to support it as best we can for as long as we can.

So, what I can infer from this is that DLC is very likely to end sometime this year. RBN support will continue for 360, but the PS3 is unknown. There are no plans for a Rock Band title and no plans for anything to attract interest in RB again.

Guys, I think this is it. We all knew it would happen someday, and I think it's finally happening. I wish it weren't, but everything is telling me otherwise.

It's been a fun ride. While I would definitely like a few more years of Rock Band, all good things must come to an end. I wouldn't be the person I am today without Rock Band, and I will be alongside it to the very end.

Wow, the end of Rock Band. I remember when GH ended almost 2 years ago and now RB will soon follow it seems. Honestly, this won't hit me as hard as the demise of GH did since I've moved on to Rocksmith, which oddly enough has moved from bi-weekly to weekly DLC, and playing other games. RB definitely had a good run and will be missed. Vaya con Dios, plastic instrument music games.

An end of an era...
I don't think there will be any more plastic instrument games in the future ever. I think the popularity of this has really come to a pretty big decline, which is sad. I still have loads of Guitar Hero games for the Wii...maybe I should revisit that stuff? Hmm...

I shouldn't be too surprised. There isn't much interest or competition in the genre anymore. Also, the DLC has consistently been three songs a week for months now. I almost wonder if that was intentional to stave off having to make an announcement like this. And of course I'd have to assume DLC isn't as profitable anymore, so almost every week has to be popular stuff just so Harmonix can make something off of it.

I'll still have the game and all, and I'll probably still play it from time to time. I've spent too much money *not* to, and I still enjoy singing and playing the other instruments when I can/feel up to it. Even so, it hasn't been the same since Rock Band 3's release (IMO), and there isn't a whole lot they can do to "shake things up" and re-ignite interest in this type of game.

These games have been a huge part of my gaming "career" (hate to use that word, but it's accurate), but I can't say I'll miss DLC all that much. I haven't enjoyed most of it since RB3 came out, which likely has something to do with it.

DLC for 11/15

• Rick Springfield – “Jessie’s Girl” O X
• Rick Springfield – “I’ve Done Everything For You” X
• Rick Springfield – “Don’t Talk to Strangers” O

This is the last artist from Blitz to have a pack, according to Harmonix. Disappointed it wasn't Kelly Clarkson or Barenaked Ladies. OH WELL.

I only really wanted "Jessie's Girl" from him, and I already got that from Blitz, so I may or may not pick up either of the others.

DLC for 1/22

Kelly Clarkson – Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)
Living Colour – Cult of Personality*
Quiet Riot – Bang Your Head (Metal Health)
Soundgarden – Spoonman*

Hey, at least it's four of them this time.

DLC for 1/29

Aerosmith – “Walk This Way”
Aerosmith – “Sweet Emotion” X
Aerosmith – “Back in the Saddle”
Aerosmith – “Dream On (Live)” X O
Aerosmith – “Legendary Child”
Aerosmith – “Lover Alot”

COMPLETELY UNEXPECTED. I guess that means the exclusivity license is now up. That could mean that Metallica is coming later in the year.

I will be picking up the pack. The first four are all fantastic, and "Legendary Child" isn't that bad either. Pretty amazing get from Harmonix.
