https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SnIZgESm4c So, Activision announced a new Guitar Hero game, Guitar Hero Live. It... doesn't look like anything I was expecting. First off, instead of the series' usual style of graphics, everything is real. The game seems to be made from the perspective of the guitarist, the intention being that you can feel what it's like to be on stage at a rock show. There's also a mode that lets you play the along with the music video for the song. Secondly, there is a brand new controller for the game. Instead of the classic five button layout, there are now six. Now there are three "frets" and two "strings". Here's a picture of the controller I'm not too keen on the new visuals. I don't think I'm alone here, but part of what made Guitar Hero fun was the crazy, over-the-top style it had. It had a certain charm that Rock Band didn't have. Also, I personally feel that first person is the most overrated trend in video games lately. I'd probably never use the music video mode either. The new controller is interesting, but I'd have to try it out before passing judgment on it. However, a new controller means that old hardware will not work with the new game. It also destroys any hope for previous Guitar Hero games to be exported into Guitar Hero Live, since they're built around an entirely different engine (we've all felt these woes before in the franchise). They're gonna have to start their library over entirely. There's really nothing that gets me excited about this new game. I'm glad that they're taking the franchise in a new direction that's distinct from Rock Band, but I'm not sure I like the direction they're going. Rock Band also has a massive advantage over Guitar Hero already, since they're gonna bring old hardware AND previously purchased DLC over. I really don't see how this new Guitar Hero would be very successful at all, unless brand name alone powers the sales. |

I agree with pretty much everything you said, Volt. I'm not excited for the new GH either, but I think maybe GHL could appeal more to people who missed out on the first round of GH/RB games. They don't have songs to import or old instruments to use, and maybe they're younger and will like the more diverse soundtrack, first-person style, and "live"/realistic style. But yeah, like you, I prefer GH's original style, but I also like that they're trying something new. I started to like RB more in the end, and both of them doing the same thing probably won't change my opinion, so I'm glad they're trying, even though they ended up doing something that I'm really not that interested in based on the info we have now. |

I.... Love the new concept! This is very exciting to me, Guitar Hero Live and Rock Band 4 will FINALLY be different experiences. I love how RB4 is more of what we love in Arcady experience, and Guitar Hero Live is basically the idea I threw to my brothers years ago about what would be cool. The music video mode is EXACTLY what I suggested, who knew they would actually do it? I'm excited that the music video mode will be continually updated with no price (at this point). That's free music! Also, it will release on Xbox One, 360, PS4/3, AND Wii U. Good job GH, I will be purchasing Live. This news excites me so much! |

Was anyone genuinely playing Guitar Hero to "feel like a rockstar"? I mean, really? Yeah this game just looks like an entirely new rhythm series, not Guitar Hero at all - akin to how Rocksmith is to Rock Band or whatever. Pass. |

No, but WoR was criticized for being too outlandish. And the series pulled off the "rockstar" stuff pretty nicely. Playing for a bunch of prisoners in GH3, the roof of Times Square in GHWT, etc. You don't buy the game solely so you can feel like a rockstar but it's probably the approach that tends to immerse the player best. I'm all for a comeback but I'm disappointed by the new layout, since I think that effectively says nobody can use their old instruments in this new game. Which I get, considering it's on a new generation of consoles, but the GRYBO layout is pretty iconic and getting rid of that seems like it'd get people off the fence, and not in the right direction. We saw RB3 trying to strike a balance between "playing a fake guitar" and "playing a real guitar" and I don't think it was as successful as they'd hoped - this is on the simpler side, obviously, but I don't see what was wrong with the layout people know the series by. The name probably already leaves a bad taste in peoples' mouths. It's not the way to get them to come back. I'm looking forward to the setlist reveal and I'm not completely put off by the changes but there's a direction they're headed in and I think we can all tell it won't be the same game we all fell in love with. Too early to tell if I'll get it. |

I feel like they had to differentiate from the Rock Band reboot because, well, RB4 is exactly where the music games left off. Guitar Hero introduces a new learning element by actually changing how you play the game. I've been watching hands-on videos from different publications and it each one of them seems genuinely excited about the fresh change. I understand that the DLC won't come over, but they've said it'll have "hundreds" of songs at launch, so that should temper the blow a bit. I am just happy that there will be two completely different music game experiences this winter, and I'll happily partake in both. My only concerns is if it is local multiplayer....I didn't notice if I'll be able to play with my brother or friends locally on this one. If not, that'll be disappointing. |

https://blog.activision.com/community/games-blog/guitar-hero/blog/2015/04/10/guitar-hero-live-revealed-coming-this-fall-2015 Sauce for the Wii U version, since we all knew that PS4/XB1 versions were inevitable. PS3/360 versions are a surprise, but if you have a next-gen system, you're probably getting it on one of those. I thought this wouldn't come to Wii U in the first place, so I immediately wrote it off. No reason to get hyped if it's not coming to a system I own, after all. I'm surprised that this is coming to Wii U, but I don't expect it to do very well. It's not the Wii and a lot of us own a secondary system for multi-plats, after all. If any platform stops being supported first, it'll probably be Wii U because nobody fucking bought it, like every third party game. The trailer didn't do much for me. I don't *care* about "feeling like a rock star"; I care about interacting with music I enjoy. I would have been more impressed if the trailer had shown the audience reacting to your performance. If you're doing well, they cheer, if not, you get booed, and if you use star power the place goes craaaaaaaaazy. Something like that. It just felt kinda meh, like I'd much rather be at an actual concert. I would have liked to see any new mechanics, if they exist. We know how these games play, so the lack of gameplay footage isn't concerning. Not sure I'm a fan of the new controller, but I guess it only adds $40 to the price? I don't see why they had to ditch the standard. One, it works. Like Oli said, the GRYBO scheme is iconic. Two, how many people want another plastic guitar? Requiring a new guitar is an unnecessary barrier to entry and may very well turn off people who may have otherwise bought this to recapture the feeling of the good ol' GH/RB days. Maybe it works/feels better than the old controllers, but who knows. I'm sure every store will have demos eventually except mine because lol fuck us. I want to see the setlist. I'm sure it'll have stuff I enjoy and stuff I didn't know I would enjoy, but the latter doesn't particularly matter if I don't get this game. Right now it's looking like a pass. |

I suppose the tl;dr of how I feel about this is the same for RB4. It's too early to tell and I have no idea if I'll get it or not. Firstly, I've been planning on the PS4 and I'll probably get it eventually, especially since Uncharted 4 is coming out along with other games I'm interested in. However in the case of RB4 and now GH Live, I'd have to buy completely new sets. I played on Wii, and there's no support for Wii anymore, so therefore I have to switch systems and buy new instruments. Additionally, the RB4 controller likely won't work with the GH Live and vice versa, so it'd be two different instruments for two different games. Obviously this costs a lot of money. The only way I would even be compelled to get RB4 and/or GH Live is if the setlist is very good, or I just have a sudden desire to rekindle nostalgic feelings, or both. I do find the concept of GH Live very interesting. Not too high on the "first-person" type background they're going for, it just seems like another twist on the background to the charts we see. It's probably gonna be a nice aesthetic, but not something that makes me go "WOW". I've pretty much only played guitar anyway so the guitar-only mode is no dealbreaker for me. The new controller could maybe motivate me to go in on the game if I have the motivation to master it, but I could also very easily find it stupid and it could ruin the game for me. I understand why GH deviated from the regular controller, but I do kind of wish they didn't change everything. But I suppose after RB4 was announced, GH felt it had to do something different and hope people really enjoy it, because that was the best possible way for them to stand out, at least in their mind. In terms of "feeling like a rockstar", I actually wanted to feel that way, at least a bit when I played GH/RB. I was more excited to interact with the music and feel like I was actually playing it, but those feelings certainly associate with being a rockstar. This entire feeling though has to be based on the setlist at least, in my opinion. If I'm not feeling the music, I won't be as enthralled in that "rockstar" aura. Gonna be interesting to see how this plays out, and I really do want to learn more about what this game has to offer. This is probably gonna work out really good or REALLY bad for GH. But I think this is a move they probably have to make, since the game has to offer something RB4 does not. If this does work out right, it would be a game changer. As for me, I'll wait and see what this game is all about before deciding one way or the other. Edited by kmr95, Apr 14 2015, 09:01 PM.
