As someone that has actually performed in a couple of bands, the new concept doesn't capture that feel. At least not in the trailer. It's dumb, looks dumb, and strikes me as nothing more than a shameless cash grab from Activision. They killed the genre once before. Wouldn't be surprised if they bungle things up again.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/05/04/rock-band-4-may-be-the-last-music-game-youll-ever-need-ign-first

The first new details on RB4 since the announcement. A lot of really great stuff.

- The game will be 1080p and 60fps.

- Pro drums are compatable.

- Drummers can now count in at the start of a song. By tapping on the green pad/cymbal, you trigger the start of the song. This is optional.

- Drum fills have been overhauled. Instead of the custom fills of previous Rock Bands, there will now be several pre-made fills that the game can randomly choose for you to play. These fills are generated based on genre and difficulty. This is to make it so the fills of any drummer can sound good, since many people just thrash about on those fills (I'm one of those). This feature will work in all legacy songs as well. Presumably there will still be an option to play without the generated fills and just have the actual drum parts of the song.

- Vocal harmonies are returning. Not only that, but EVERY SINGLE SONG ever released in Rock Band will be upgraded to have harmonies. You can thank a dedicated group of fans for this, who did this for Harmonix entirely for free.

- Rock Band 4 will be adding free-form melodies for vocalists. What this means is that it is no longer necessary to sing like a robot to nail the vocals. This new system will allow singers to add their own flare to songs, make up their own harmonies, or just sing bullshit, and as long as you're in tune, the game will credit you for it.

- The Rock Band 4 campaign has been described as a "Rock Band RPG". Vague, but they promise to expand on this later this month. "'We're just working really hard at making everything feel like you are living this story, feeling what it's like to be a musician playing gigs, playing shows," said Rock Band 4 designer Alli Thresher. "We want you to step up to the mic and interact with them, tell jokes, have them respond to your jokes, you know? Everything's about all the stuff that all of us might have experienced, and want to share it with the people playing the game."'

- Amazingly, Rock Band 4 will be Stage Kit compatible.

All of these new features sound awesome, especially the free-form melodies. I have a feeling this game will be the plastic guitar game to end all plastic guitar games.

There was already an option to replace the free-form fills with the actual notes from the song. I really don't want Harmonix dictating to me what a "good" fill is. If I want to improvise, I should be able to.

Everything else sounds great, though.

I am excited for RB4, but since most of the announcements were about vocals, which I never touch, it isn't all that more persuading to me to buy this. I love me some drums, but I would be way more interested in learning about getting another kick pedal, and how that can be done/improved from the nigh impossible attempts to get it previously. I love to play me the metal RBN songs, so I kinda need the double bass kick available to me, not changes in pointless drum fills. I don't care about a Rock Band RPG either, but I am sure some might find that cool. I like that this is going to be a down and dirty revival of music games of past, but that is all it is. More of the same, but that is not always a bad thing.

My buddy never had a problem with his extra kick pedal. His red pad, though. That thing hated him.

Yeah, I have the ion drum set its eh. The symbols broke, and the red button does indeed "double" hit occasionally which kills your streak. Need new drums quickly.

There existed RB1 kits that weren't completely unplayable straight out the box? How?

My RB1 kit is currently my oldest still-working plastic instrument. My RB1 guitar shared that title until about a month ago, when it finally died. They really made those to last, it seems.

Just realized that I had a dream last night that my RB3 guitar still worked. It doesn't work. Well, the USB dongle thingy for it doesn't work, but the actual instrument is fine.

My RB1 guitar stopped working about a week after I got it when I threw it out the window because RB guitars are terrible.

There weren't. RB2 drums were soooooo much better than RB1 drums.
