Wait, how do you do that? I mean, I did it after leveling a bit and controlling Reyn, but it will still be helpful to know.

Since I don't know which control scheme you're using, here you go. Obviously, it's the "Come to me!" command.

Idk who's all familiar with the Oblivion modding scene here, but I figure I'll ask anyway: Does anyone know of any (preferably comprehensive) mod that overhauls NPC textures/meshes? Not sure if Qarl's Texture Pack 3 did it, and even if it did the characters still look blah to me.

Looking at Improved Facial Textures atm. I could probably live with just better faces, though I'd like better bodies of all NPCs too. Most seem to focus on females... Gee I wonder why.

Also posting a mod list in case I missed any essentials. I'll definitely start adding quests at some point, but not right now. Would like to play a character without adding all that shit.

Unofficial Patches (Oblivion, SI, KoTN/DLC)
Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul
Qarl's Texture Pack 3
Unique Landscapes
Better Cities
Natural Environments
Low-Poly Grass (I don't *need* this one, but I'd always recommend it as an easy fix for a major resource hog)
Darnified UI

Woo triple post.

Finished Fire Emblem: Awakening. I'd write a review, but as I've probably said at least a hundred times, you know what you're getting with each Fire Emblem. This is easily the most "different" and most accessible Fire Emblem released in the states, but at the core it's still a Fire Emblem game.

Casual mode: I didn't use it, but its existence doesn't dumb the game down. It's basically a way to spare newcomers from having a totally gimped army and/or from soft resetting because their best unit died forty minutes into a battle. If it gets more people to buy the game, whatever. Means more Fire Emblem for us.

DLC: If you want money, The Golden Gaffe is practically required. It's the easiest way to make money. Hell, it's practically the only way. Very few bosses drop Bullions and it's not like FE10 where royalty would give you 50k or however much to restock. Matter of fact, you get a grand total of zilch gold as part of the story.

EXPonential Growth is also nice to have, though nowhere near required unless you want to groom super units for the extra-difficult DLC we don't have here in the States yet. It might also come in handy for any chapter in which you're trying to recruit children. If you're getting the previous two maps, you might as well spend the $6 on the three pack and get Infinite Regalia for infinite special weapons.

Children: They're stupidly broken. My Cynthia got about as many kills as Miriel, a decent mage but no Soren, and she was my second best unit. She also inherited the game's most broken skill, Galeforce, from her mother, along with Aether. Wow. I didn't bother to get them all. I probably will my next playthrough, but idk.

Fanservice: The most fanservice-ish thing about this game is its bonus artbook. Well, that and the Beach DLC we don't have yet. Other than those two things, it wasn't half as bad as I feared, especially after seeing the designs for Tharja and Nowi. The designs are more anime-esque, though, which may or may not be a good thing. I personally am indifferent.

Difficulty: Overall this is probably the hardest Fire Emblem to come out in the States. The first seven chapters are pretty hard, though they're made easier with prudent use of Frederick and/or Kellam. Just don't let Frederick get every kill and you're golden. You should get your first Master/Second Seals around chapter 7-8, and by then you should have a unit or two ready to promote. I'd recommend MU/Chrom because they have both their class's skills at level 10.

But yeah, after that it gets a bit easier. I'd say chapter 11, 17, 23, and the endgame are the hardest ones after the first seven. It gets even easier if you have Donnel and have been raising him. He's probably the most broke unit ever. Dodges more than *Mia* (I'm talking the broke Radiant Dawn version, not the merely great version in Path of Radiance), can heal up with Sol on the rare occasion he does take damage, has more HP than anyone, hits like a truck, doubles most everything, and can learn Armsthrift so he almost never breaks a weapon.

I suppose it's time to break out the spoilers, because story. I know Marill, Lightning, and LAD too because he slo, would kill me if I didn't.
The story isn't much different from the usual Fire Emblem formula. Someone's trying to start war and other such bullshit with your nation, you have to fight them, and eventually it all takes a backseat to saving the world from whatever horror is about to be unleashed. It *works*, but sometimes you wish they would try something different, especially after...

Chapter ten. Holy shit, chapter ten. It's easily the best chapter in the game and it's not even close. Emmeryn sacrificed herself to save Chrom from having to make an impossible decision. Even the Plegian soldiers seemed to be shaken by her sacrifice and lost the desire to fight. It's raining on the map too, and we all know rain takes sadness up to eleven.

Oh, and this song is playing the entire time, during both your phase and the enemy phase. It's easily the best song I've heard in the series. But yeah, this song is what makes the chapter so damn amazing.

I guess what I'm trying to say is the series should try forgoing the usual "lol saev teh wurldz" fare once in a while and instead focus on making you feel an attachment to your characters and their struggles. I think it might have made for a better story, because half the plot twists come in chapter 13 and are immediately rendered irrelevant by other story developments until chapter 21. It all feels disjointed, like there were three separate stories. The game would have been better served by using one story, or by taking a few more chapters and better tying it all together. (I understand *how* it's all tied together; I'm just saying it could be better.)

Also, Chrom's marriage can literally come out of nowhere. You just beat chapter 11, and out of the blue the girl who Chrom has the best support rank with (if he isn't already married, which he can be) tells him that she loves him, wants to marry him, and all of that shit. There's no buildup, no romance, and no courtship; it's just dropped on you like a bomb. Of course everyone accepts it. I could understand it with Cordelia; everything about her character heavily implies unrequited love for Chrom. But everyone else? No.

On that note, I hear some of the romantic supports aren't all that great, but I haven't heard most of them. Not that I expect supports to be great in Fire Emblem, but I'd think they can do better than having someone propose because he loves the woman's pies.
Overall it's still a great game and totally justified my 3DS purchase, along with the other awesome gaems 3DS is getting this year, but it'd be very hard to top Radiant Dawn in my eyes.

Oh, right, thinking my game queue looks like this:
Devil Survivor Overclocked
FF7
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
FF6
Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2
FF8

I suppose I could play Oblivion on the side, too. Idk lol.

Keep Moving Forward

Around New Year's Day, I decided to do this new project of mine. Here lately I've noticed that I've been neglecting a lot of my older games in favor of my newer ones. While that's to be expected, I still thought that I should go and revisit those older games. To accomplish this, I came up with a fun idea. I thought that it would be cool to play through every single game that I own in the order that they were released. By doing this, I could witness the evolution of games first hand. So far, it's proving to be a pretty awesome experience. My goal is to have it finished by the end of the year, and I'm currently at 1999. I've only played about 20% of my games, though, so we'll see if I can accomplish my goal.

Here's the games that I've played so far:

(1985) Super Mario Bros.
(1986) Legend of Zelda (100% run)
(1987) Mega Man
(1990) Super Mario World
(1991) Sonic the Hedgehog
(1991) Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (100% run)
(1992) Sonic the Hedgehog 2
(1993) Star Fox
(1993) Super Bomberman
(1993) Jurassic Park
(1993) Sonic CD (Good ending)
(1993) Mega Man X (all items)
(1994) Super Metroid (4:32 speed run)
(1994) Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles
(1994) Donkey Kong Country
(1995) Tyrian (<3)
(1995) Chrono Trigger
(1996) Super Mario 64 (120 stars)
(1996) Touhou: Highly Responsive to Prayers
(1996) Harvest Moon
(1996) Kirby Super Star
(1996) Wave Race 64
(1996) Sonic 3D Blast (All emerald run)
(1996) Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire
(1996) Mario Kart 64
(1996) Star Fox 64
(1996) Touhou: Story of the Eastern Wonderland
(1996) Yoshi's Story
(1997) Touhou: Phantasmagoria of Dim. Dream
(1997) Goldeneye 007
(1998) StarCraft (I was nearly done with each campaign when my laptop died ;_; )
(1998) Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (100% run, yes, I've already played it AGAIN)
(1999) Super Smash Bros.
(1999) Pokemon Snap
(1999) Star Wars: Episode I Racer
(1999) Sonic Adventure (currently playing, going for all emblems)

Another thing that I'm doing is that any game whose multiplayer is a major part of the game, I've been playing matches of it with my family and neighbors. I want to get the most out of every game, so I'm making sure I get those multiplayer matches in too.

So far, this is proving to be a pretty great experience. I recommend you all try this project out for yourself. Not only has it been fun, but it also feels nice to revisit these games after so long.

Yeah, that's not going to happen. It'd be *nice*, but I own way too many games for it to be feasible without setting aside lots of new acquisitions. I wouldn't get to the longest ones very early, but still.

Anyway, started SMT: Nocturne. Wasn't particularly enjoying Devil Survivor, mostly because of the stupid shit it puts you through. Escort missions with stupid AI/characters that die if touched? Playing the same few maps to grind? Blah. This is a more traditional SMT experience and I'm having a bit more fun with it.

Beast/Dragon Eye are bullshit moves even by SMT standards. Whoever came up with these moves is the worst person ever.

My sister left her 3DS home while she's at school this week so it won't distract her, so I'm entitled to a non-stop FE Awakening festival all spring break.

I'm at chapter seven [hard/classic], but baw, I hate this chapter. I actually beat it, but Lon'qu and Vaike died in the process, and I didn't want to lose two people in the same battle, especially since I had been no-death'ing. Then I went to summoning weak bonus team members to grind everyone up, including motherfucking Donnel who is basically completely useless right now. I just keep fighting Mist's squad and letting Donnel kill Mist alone since she gives a boss's XP, but can't fight back.

And those fuckers keep ganging up on poor little Ricken, who is clearly the best. If only he were better at dodging...

But yeah, cool game.

I personally stopped using Vaike pretty early on because, if I recall correctly, his defense is super low and just isn't worth using since he takes a shit ton of damage.

But yeah I try to keep people from dying even if I don't use them, too. Sounds like you're trying to keep your entire party at a usable level. I just focused on a small group when I played. Would have taken way more time than I'd have preferred putting in to keep everyone up.

Seven is arguably the hardest chapter in the game. There are other hard chapters, but none take place in such a confined area where Wyvern Riders can (most likely) reach your location in one turn. Plus in later chapters, you'll likely have some reclassed/promoted units.

As far as Vaike goes, yes, he takes a shitton of damage and isn't worthwhile as a front line fighter, but he can still be a fairly useful unit if you don't throw him at like ten enemies at once. He stayed on my team the entire game, though that's mostly because I didn't grind all that much/bother to get the children.

If you haven't figured it out yet, enemies *always* go for the unit in their range with the lowest defense/resistance. This is quite naturally exploitable.

Heh, I beat it first try after posting that. I helps that Lon'qu is now an unstoppable killer who always assists everyone and always gets critical hits. He has a Leif's Blade, which gives him the same crit chance as his Killing Edge, which I'm trying to preserve. He sucked prior to my onslaught of summoning.

But dammit, when can I get another Beaststone? Panne only has like 9 uses left.

Also, does it matter if you do the Paralogues well? I got Donnel in the first, so mission accomplished, but I didn't save the village and Anna died in the second, and two of the three villagers died in the third. (But it was totally their faults for running directly into the Pegasus Knights.)

You can buy Beaststones after chapter 12. However, it might be worth your time to reclass Panne to a Wyvern Rider. Her growths in HP, strength, skill, and luck are pretty damn good in that class. Her defense growth isn't that great (50%), but she'll probably one-shot a lot of things.

Probably a smart idea to preserve the Killing Edge; they're buyable after chapter 19.

As far as the Paralogues go, you get some items, depending on how many villagers you save in Paralogue 3. I was unable to save any, but whatever. In a game with infinite levels, stat up items aren't as useful as they once were. Anna is recruitable in Paralogue 4, and she's definitely worth getting. The Trickster class is essentially a healing thief, which automatically makes her more useful than Gaius. She might not kill a lot of things, but her ability to heal and good dodge rates mean she can be used on your endgame team.

Many paralogues are the children chapters and children are just stupidly broken. The maps are hard, though. Keep in mind that the skill children inherit from their parents is the last skill on their skill list. You'll probably want to put off maps with a male child until the mother has Galeforce because it's the best skill in the game. (Two actions per turn if the character in question gets a kill on the first. You can see how useful this is.)

I totally missed Lightning's post. Vaike was one of my mains, mostly because he start with a lot more HP than all but Fredrick, but I had the same problem as you. Even with early-level Ricken or Miriel in their range, enemies would always swarm Vaike because he never dodged, had terrible defense, and had awful hit rates. I stopped using him.

I was spreading them out decently before like Chapter 6. Then I just started grinding a group, and now I only use them, with some ghosts if I need a certain type that I don't care if they die. For example, I took Leonardo over Virion for Chapter 7, because he was better, and his death doesn't do anything. I took Claire in Chapter 8 because she's a Pegasus Knight in a desert level, and I've never used my Sumia, so she's awful. (I took Claire in addition to Cordelia.)

I guess I should start using Nowi instead of Panne now, but I think I'll need to get her level up a little first. 18 health is a bad deal.

My team is: Chrom, [avatar], Fredrick, Stahl, Ricken, Lon'qu, Lissa, Panne, and Donnel (who is always just paired with someone unless an opportunity arises). I'll probably start using Gregor now in place of Panne, but I'll have to work on grinding Nowi and Donnel to be worth-while.

And random, but how do you guys pronounce Lon'qu?

I just pronounce it "Lon coo'". I never used him, though, so I never had much time to think of it.

Also, Nowi eventually became one of my best units, same with Panne. I turned them both into Wyvern Lords and they were both pretty unstoppable for me later on (granted, I was pretty overleveled through the game). Nowi's HP eventually becomes very high, too, because her growth is over 100% I think.

Also, if you ever have trouble with any map, I suggest making extensive use of pairing. The game was pretty difficult for me, and then I started using pairing more often and your units become so much better with it.

So yeah, started another FEA file. I figure it's something to do during downtime in the chat or whatever.

Lunatic/Classic
Female Avatar, +Spd/-Def

The first real map took me 18 turns. I probably could have done it faster, but I wanted to be sure everyone would survive, plus healing everyone up is free experience for Lissa. Almost fucked it up *anyway* by moving Lissa into the boss's range, but she pulled a dodge out of her ass and survived a hit.

Naturally I'll be grinding characters up with this file for relationships/stats/DLC and whatever else.
