I've been playing Dota 2 with a friend occasionally. We're just playing against bots for now 'cause I still don't know a lot of stuff. I don't know what to buy and when to buy it, I don't know anything about the Dota 2 jungle, I only know a few heroes, I don't know how to coordinate using the courier, I don't know when to put points into attributes instead of abilities... So yeah, still kinda learning. I'm not planning on putting a lot of time into this, though. When I played LoL, I probably played it daily, but I'm not going to do that with Dota 2. It seems like it's more friendly to casual people, so hopefully I can just play a couple games every few days and have fun. If not, well, I got other stuff to play/watch/read.

Lemme know when you're playing, I've been trying to get back into it. I played DotA 1 for a couple of years so I mostly know what everyone is capable of but I need to get into the flow of itemization and map awareness and mechanical ability.

I think LoL is actually probably friendlier to casual players.. hard to tell, really. DotA requires more mechnical ability and knowledge (trees can be cut down, creep camps can be stacked, more punishing abilities like long invisibility and bigger stuns) to be good at. But yeah if you're doing casual games and need a +1 just let me know.

Yeah, I've heard people say that Dota 2 is more difficult, but I guess I just felt like the game accepts more casual people 'cause it seems to have more options for learning (or they're planning to add more, anyway). But yeah I see what you mean about the mechanical ability and knowledge stuff. I'll have to play more, maybe watch some to get to know what people do about trees and stuff.

So been playing dat Civilization V expansion, Brave New World.

I'll eventually try out *all* the civs, but I started this game with the Shoshone. Native pride, yo. They have a scout unit with an ability that lets you pick one of seven bonuses from the early game ruins. One includes free technology, so this would be OP as fuck if they let you always pick tech. Didn't get to use this much (grabbed a tech and upgraded the unit), but ah well, it's still a sweet ability.

The AI still sucks cocks. My closest neighbor was Siam in this game. Around turn 90, Germany's like, "lol my disagreements with Siam are too much to bear, want to be my partner in war against them?" I wanted to go to war anyway (they had a city in what I perceived to be my area), but didn't have the units to fight, so I click "give me ten turns". I get a few of my dudes outside Siam's border, get the "lol war or gtfo" screen on which I lie and say I'm passing through. So the war starts, I take one city, raze the other, but notice the capital is ripe for the taking thanks to Germany. I waltz in, take it, and Siam is no more.

200 turns later, everyone except for The Ottomans hates me. Even Germany. I can't possibly understand it. I went to war with them, am not within what they think is "their area", and have even given them free luxury items/open borders. I have to think there's a huge negative hit for wiping a civilization out or something, which would *make sense*, but there are three civilizations that are a whole ocean away and were never involved in this shit because nobody knew they existed at the time, and two hate me anyway. I suppose it's also possible they really hate liars, since I'm often called the dishonorable one. Course, they lie about friendships all the time themselves.

The AI also still sucks at war. Portugal recently tried declaring one on me, using its city that was all up in my shit as a base. Unfortunately you have to *fight* in war, not sit back and let me pick away at your city's defense until I can walk a guy in and take it. Just as I pwnt Portugal's shit, The Netherlands and Germany both declare war, so I have three fuckers trying to kill me. Luckily the east side of my nation is all forests, so the enemy moves slow and I can pick them off at my leisure. It helps I get +15% to my strength in my nation. But they had superior numbers to me, so any decent attempt at warring should have resulted in me losing at least a city and then offering to give up stuff for peace. Instead I got them all to declare peace with no spoils of any kind.

I get the feeling they're going to keep throwing wars at me, never mind that they can't win against a half competent human without a tech lead. I don't mind fighting wars, but I really wanted to spend my time messing with the new culture/diplomacy features, not fight the neighbors because they're stupid. There isn't even any way to apologize for past transgressions and they will very rarely let you be friends unless they ask first, so what the fuck is a guy to do?

Ugh. Might just set the map to archipelago so I know I can set up a decent culture (or diplomatic, if I'm inclined) base and play with the new shit. The AI is *even worse* at naval warfare, which would give me like half the game before I worry about them, and by then I have naval superiority for the rest of the game.

I like what I'm seeing so far, though. Culture's more than "hurr durr just build teh culture buildinz n get teh policies" now. You still need the right buildings and all, but now you'll need to show the world that your culture kicks ass to win. Diplomacy has more of an effect than "lol buy teh city states' votes" because you'll be voting on binding resolutions starting at about the 40-50% point, but I have yet to see if I can still win diplomatic victory that way. Idk about trade routes. They're very cool, but they allow you to make gobs of money with minimal effort. There are also other uses, but mostly for getting a struggling city of yours on its feet. Most of the new civs also have units/abilities that play off of these new ideas, which is awesome. It's a good thing I picked the slowest shipping option for SMT IV, because this will eat a toooooon of hours.

EDIT: Also bought the Korea/Wonders of the Ancient World wonder pack. I suppose I could have waited because the base game/Gods and Kings/the DLC will likely all go on sale during the Summer sale to promote Brave New World, but Korea's so damn OP as a science nation that it was money well-spent. The wonders are all decent at the least, but the AI seems to like bee-lining to them, so I haven't really used them much.

The British ruled for YEARS with a powerful navy. A Powerful Navy is ALL you need to control a continent. if your enemies are against ANY accessible water, you own their shit if you strengthen your navy. If that game doesn't work like that, its a shit game and extremely unrealistic.

EDIT I was always intrigued by the Civ games though. I hear they are good, so you shouldn't have a problem with getting that to work

Yes, ghost, I have a basic grasp of the history of major nations like Britain. =p But you're right; their ability and units are tailored towards naval superiority.

As far as the game goes, a good navy *helps*, but it's only really essential on archipelago maps. I suppose it's more essential in Brave New World lest you want your precious sea trade routes plundered in every war.

Also, Portugal was known for its naval prowess. Speaking of which, I went back to that game, and about thirty turns after I ended that last big war, Portugal declares ANOTHER ONE. Germany and The Netherlands follow suit, but they did fuck all, probably because I wtfpwnt all their troops in the last war. The impressive and related thing was that Portugal had a respectable navy, which I don't think I've seen at Prince difficulty (aka normal). They sent in probably ten ships and actually used them to plunder my trade routes/blockade and bombard my cities, along with 20+ land troops.

I was decimated after the last war and only one city could have put out any decent number of troops, so I was boned. I was trying to rebuild my shit, but lolno, they'll never let me now. It would have to be a military game all the time, which doesn't appeal to me at this moment.

But yeah, the AI is still resentful. It's fucked that Germany hates me for lying, never mind they were the reason I was on Siam's border. It's also fucked that the AI sees taking any cities as "warmongering", even if you weren't the one to declare war. I suppose the nations I hadn't met could have heard about the stuff I did from the others on my continent once they met, but idk why they'd hate me, considering this literally never affected them. All this would be more tolerable if there were more things you could do to repair relations, or even if the negative modifiers faded over time, but there aren't and they don't. Distance would also be a good factor to base this shit on. Obviously someone across the sea from all your cities shouldn't be as affected as someone with two cities practically on your border. Sounds like a mod for someone; I doubt it'd be that hard for a good modder to do.

Think I'm going to try Venice and a more peaceful game this time around. It should help that I only get Venice for a long while.

FTL -- Initially, this felt like the best game ever and I thought I'd keep playing it for a while, but... I don't know now. A lot of things seem to repeat a lot. For example, you might find a planet with one survivor. You can either ignore the survivor or invite them to join your crew. They'll either accept or kill someone. Another thing that repeats a lot is a ship that says you have to pay them if you want to pass. You can do that, or attack them. So I do still really like the game, but it kinda annoys me a little if I play it a lot at one time because I run into the same situations repeatedly. I'll just play it less whenever I play it, I guess.

Heavy Rain -- Very interesting story so far. Also, I know people complained about a lack of gameplay, but it has more than TWD. TWD is a lot of talking and picking up stuff. I know Heavy Rain's gameplay is mostly QTE's, but still, it feels like I'm doing more than I'm doing in TWD. I think QTE's kinda work better for fighting in this game, anyway... This isn't a game where you just go up to people and start punching them, so I don't think it needs a fancy battle system. Anyway, I like the four characters that the player can control so far. They all seem to have unique backgrounds and you do different kinds of things when you play the different characters. Looking forward to playing more of this.

BIT.TRIP Presents... Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien -- Yeah I don't know what's up with that full title either. I just call it Bit.Trip Runner 2 or Runner 2. Anyway, it's SO FUN. I loved the first one and thought this was going to be a handful of new levels with new graphics. But no! They added a lot of stuff. New characters, more types of obstacles, and a DANCE BUTTON. Basically, while dancing, you can't do anything to avoid obstacles, but you get points for dancing so the pros will probably use it to maximize points or something. There's probably more stuff I haven't discovered yet, but it's fun. Yay.

Finished Heavy Rain. Very good story (IMO, of course). I don't want to replay it to get the different endings, but I'll probably read some of them. I'm interested to see how some characters in my game ended up alive/dead in other endings. The ending I got was probably one of the happier ones, but there are 17 total so idk.

Anyway, I know a lot of you reeeeally don't like thinking about games like this (few battles! no XP! no equipment! too much talking! maybe other reasons, idk) but it really is enjoyable. And it's short-ish (HowLongToBeat.com has it at 9.5 hours) so if you do hate it, it won't waste much of your time.

I got a copy of Civ IV because Steam derped and put the new Civ V expansion on sale early. It's useless to me; I already own Civ IV.

I'd like to give it away to someone who wants the game and/or to try the series out. First person to post that they want it gets it. (If you're not already on my Steam list, I'll need your name there.)

EDIT: Gave it to the old man.

I've been playing loads of GTA IV after I bought it on sale. It's a really good game, and I'm about 10 hours in. Loads of fun to just cruise around. I really recommend getting it if you like open world games/are curious about it. Only $10 on steam at the moment.

I'll also be playing Morrowind later on. I'm really excited to start playing it, I've heard nothing but great things about it.

It's hard to determine which of the two is more unethical, though.

...Probably the NCAA. At least EA has to pay its employees.
