If you beat chapter 7, it should be smooth sailing for much of the rest of the game. The tank and Selvaria are two of the hardest things until like chapter 20 or some shit. Also, do side content if you haven't been. |

Finally finished Shin Megami Tensei IV. Got the Chaos ending. I think next I'll go for neutral, because fuck Lawfags. I might even get the "bad" ending before Law, idk. Anyway, some thoughts. -I like the new gameplay tweaks. No defense stat is a game changer; it ensures most things are threatening (well, if they get the jump on you and you're weak to their shit) right up until the endgame. Smirking seems small, but it can totally change a battle by giving you extra turns to pull off more actions/more damage to get a needed kill. However, as with most things in SMT, it can work against you in this exact same way. Also, the revamped fusion system is sweet. Picking skills eliminates the tedium of shuffling for hours to get that perfect skill set. The only issue might be that you have too many good skills. I never used the recommended demons (I'd rather pick my skills, tyvm), but that's a good newcomer feature. I just wish that you chose both demons and saw what the result would be, instead of picking one demon and seeing all the possibilities. It's just simpler to navigate. -Being able to see enemies on the map and hit them to get a pre-emptive strike is awesome. I don't understand random encounters in 2013 unless you're intentionally trying to make an "old school" RPG. -The difficulty starts out pretty decent, but as the game goes on, you get apps that totally break the game. Full party magic regen comes to mind as the most broken one, because you can easily throw out attacks that cost 25-30 MP with your character and regenerate the magic by walking around for a few seconds after battle. Other good ones include the Scout series (give you various bonuses for recruiting demons), and the extra demon/skill slot apps, which are essentials. You don't need 24 goddamn demons though; 16 is more than enough. No need to use the DLC when the main game gives you some broke options. Final Chaos boss totally disappointed me. I was prepared for something that would throw everything and the kitchen sink at me, but the worst attack this boss had was an Almighty attack with an instant kill chance. It didn't even use the game's most bullshit move, Ancient Curse. Yawn. -Saving anywhere is a godsend. No more losing an hour or more because you derped and made the wrong move or something. -Money isn't plentiful in this game, but it's also not very necessary. There is literally no incentive to buy most armors, considering all they do is change your weaknesses/resistances and add a few health/stat points. It helps that you get some damn good ones as quest rewards. Your biggest expense will be weapons and maybe gun bullets. -The story is never the high point of an SMT game, and it isn't here. It's better than Nocturne and Strange Journey, but that doesn't take a whole lot. Faint praise aside, the story has some good moments/plot twists. I like how you're actually shown what a Law and Chaos world would be like. Sure, every SMT game shows this, but I just feel this game's way of doing so is more effective. -The characters were better than usual for the series. It was nice to see Chaos and Law characters who weren't at each other's throats for the whole damn game. There's also one spoilerific moment (at least in Chaos) concerning one of the main characters, which made me respect that character. On the villain side, the main human villain is decent. His cause is good, but how he goes about it is anything but. -The graphics are great, easily better than any of the PS2 SMT/Persona games. I like the 3D effect, but I didn't play with it on because switching it off when traveling through areas would be a pain in the ass. Kind of hard to hit enemies on the map with it on, which is important. The music is decent too, but most of it is nothing I'd put on my computer. It does its job: Boss tracks are aggressive, sad music is played during sad scenes, etc. All things considered, I'd say this is in contention for my favorite SMT title. It's either this or Strange Journey, and I'm not sure I can pick at this moment. >.> |

I just completed GTA IV, so I guess I should share some thoughts on it. It was definitely a fun game, and not something that you finish in two days, which is nice. The missions were fun, although they got really repetitive. The missions either had you 1: going somewhere to kill a specific person, in which you had to take out loads of his allies. 2: Chasing a car, and then killing the person in the car either during the chase or at a specific place. 3: Stealing drugs and killing people while driving away from them. 4:Some variation or mixture of the three. The actual gameplay is pretty great, cars feel awesome to drive and the gunplay is fine. It's a third person cover based shooter, which can be really fun, and it should be since 50% of the game is sitting behind cover shooting bitches. The story wasn't anything to write home about either. The protagonist comes to America to help out his cousin and to track down some asshole who killed his friends in a war back in Europe so you get involved with the mafia and various people (most of them douchebags). When you finish up a questline the main guy who have been giving you missions for the line is your buddy and will call you on numerous occassions asking you to go drinking, bowling, playing darts, going to a stripclub or getting some food. After a few trips of this you start asking yourself, what the hell am I doing, and why am I doing this? After a while I just hung up as soon as they asked me if I wanted to go do something. It didn't seem to affect the outcome of the game in any way shape or form. What a fucking great game mechanic. My friend (who thinks it's the greatest game ever) told me that they give you guns and stuff if you become great friends with these people, which is kind of silly since you pretty early on (5-10 hours in or something) get $250k for one mission, which pretty much makes buying guns a piece of cake since your money never seems to run out. Getting 5-10k per mission also helps. All in all GTA IV was a fun experience and I'm glad I picked it up (at €10 that is), but it's easily one of the most overrated games of all time, even if it is 7 years old. And I obviously have to compare this to Red Dead Redemption. My opinion: RDR is about 10 times better. Still, I'd give GTA IV an 8/10. |

On that note, played and beat Saints Row: The Third recently. Gameplay-wise, it was very easy, by far the easiest third person shooter I've ever played. This has to be intentional. I think it'd be immersion-killing to have a game this over-the-top be one in which you die after a few shots. You're often getting shot at by tanks and other such shit, and it'd be no fun if they were OHKO weapons or whatever. It gets even easier after you reach level 50 and get the perks that make your character invincible/have infinite ammo, but you can beat the game before this. (I didn't because the fun in an open world game never comes from bee-lining through the plot) There are also lots of not-TPS things to do in the game, like one minigame that involves skydiving through Steelport and another that involves causing a shitton of damage with a gigantic ball of yarn. I loved this stuff; it was a great change of pace. I can't say I know how driving should feel in the vidya, but it worked and was fun, so that's all I have to say on that topic. Does anybody really give a fuck about the plot of a Saints Row game at this point? If you're still a fan of this series, or a new one, as it may be, you probably realize what little plot there is is an excuse for the developers to squeeze in the most insane shit they can think of. The first mission culminates in you jumping out of a plane, shooting motherfuckers while in mid-air, and rescuing one of your homies, and it gets more insane from here. I'm surprised by the female characters. In a game where "sexy" fashion is prevalent and where prostitution is a part of the main plot, the female characters aren't as objectified as you might think. Both Shaundi and Viola are decent characters. Sure, they look good because video games, but they take nobody's shit and they're willing participants in the game's events, even when male characters want them to sit out. There comes a point where they get captured (zomg spoilers!11), but they still had more agency in this game than most damseled characters, so I was like "okay". But yeah, outside of that, none of the characters are anything special. They all get hilarious and profane dialogue, though, which is more in line with what I was expecting and wanting from this game anyway, so I'm cool. Graphically, the game isn't the most impressive thing out there. Fine, it's an open world game, sacrifices have to be made. I don't care. What I do care about is that this was a bad PC port. There is no reason that this game should be dipping below 30 FPS at ANY point on my machine, yet there were a good number of points at which the game did just that. I also think the Steam overlay made the game crash on me. I turned that shit off and I never had another crash. I had fun with this game and all, but this is the one thing that will make me hesitant to replay this (and/or buy SRIV) for a while. The soundtrack was pretty coo'. Lots of songs I had never heard of, but some of these songs were sweet, so they went on my playlist. Farewell, Mona Lisa is obviously the best song in da gaem because Dillinger, but Power and Satisfaction were up there too. I didn't mind the classical selection, but it seems rather incongruous in this series. So yeah. I liked the game. Definitely worth my $7.50, but the technical issues suck ass. Also figuring out the new cultural victory in Civilization V. My first thought was that you might need a lot of cities to compete with the big culture producers of the game, but I don't think having more cities helps because that doesn't affect your tourism output. I'm consistently winning with 2-4 cities, though I had like 7 in my first culture win. The only thing I'd want more cities for is so I can have trade routes with everyone, which would help spread my culture faster because of that lovely +25% tourism for a trade route to a civ. (I also need to focus on spreading my religion for the +25% tourism bonus. I just normally find better things to build than things that give faith.) Idk how much faster I can *go*. I suppose on a Pangaea map on which I can trade with everyone and spread religion, I might be able to get a sub-250 turn win, which I'd be satisfied with. But on a continents/archipelago map, it'll take me far longer to meet everyone, meaning the influence of my culture starts a lot later and adding more turns. Think I'ma start Kanye Quest nao. |

I was sitting trying to decide which game I should start playing next between "Alan Wake", "Tomb Raider", "To the Moon" and "Mirror's Edge". I almost booted up "Mirror's Edge", but I was like TO DA MOON. So I fired up "To the Moon" tonight. It's pretty fun and interesting so far, and the dialogue really cracks me up. |

As I mentioned in the ToI, I played too much Counter-Strike: Global Offensive the last two days. It's pretty fun with friends. Alone, it might get frustrating if you're new/unskilled (like us) because you'll probably die a lot, but with friends, it's still fun 'cause you can talk to each other while you're dead and stuff. Also, like other games, you can watch other people play while you're dead and it's fun to watch your friends and try to give advice and stuff. And of course, playing with friends only (instead of with friends on a public server) was fun too because we were all bad and that meant we could stay alive longer. Anyway uh looking forward to playing some more. I don't think anyone here plays, but if you do, you should join us sometime. |

I used to play CS 1.6 like 7 years ago. It was cool, but I got tired of it really fast so I started playing Day of Defeat, which was just loads more fun. It would be interesting to try CS again, although I really don't think it's my kind of game, way too slow. |

I just completed "To the Moon". Wow. That was such a beautiful story. I am so happy that Ro force fed us this game (thanks <3). I was pretty misty eyed during the end. I don't really know what to say about it except that it was simply amazing and one of the most beautiful stories I've ever had the pleasure to experience. It's only €8 for us Europeans on steam, and is just incredible. If you don't really know what to play next or just want a truly incredible experience, plenty of laughs and great moments...buyitbuyitbuyitbuyitbuyitbuyitbuyitbuyitbuyit |

YEAH FOURTH POST IN A ROW I DON'T EVEN CARE YOLO After finishing up GTA IV and trying out some Dead Space and shitting myself, I decided it was time for some Tomb Raider. Holy. Shit. That game is so awesome. I've lost count how many times I've yelled out something while some intense crap is going on. I'm really, really enjoying this game. The world is beautiful, the combat is fun and the exploration is fantastic. I'm so glad I picked up this during the Steam sale. Not even sour that I didn't get it at its lowest price point. I also played some Minecraft with the girlfriend yesterday, it was really fun. I haven't really played a lot with other people, so it's a nice change of pace. |

c-c-c-combo breaker I'm waiting to play my more intense games (Skyrim, etc) until I get my latest purchase: The Noctua NH-D14. Sure, $83, but it's considered one of the best air coolers out there (if not the best), has a six year warranty, and seems super easy to install. It'll be a gigantic improvement over lol stock cooler, at any rate. In the meantime, finally got around to Ys: The Oath in Felghana. Had it on my laptop, but playing with no controller sucked donkey balls. With a proper controller it's a lot more fun. It's very fun gameplay-wise, being an action RPG much in the vein of Tales, but the big difference is that boss fights are harder. You can't just heal off damage, so you have to learn how to avoid (or prevent damage from) the boss's attacks. The music kicks ass, too. Graphics are competent, but nothing you'll be impressed by. Story and characters are meh, but you play Ys games for the gameplay (and the music too, I suppose), so it's whatever. It helps that the game is short so you won't be suffering through a bad plot for 800 hours, but this also means I wouldn't recommend it at its $15 price point on Steam unless you're into JRPGs. If you can get it for $5, I'd try it out. |

Got my Noctua NH-D14 installed. It keeps the CPU at about 25-35 C when doing normal internets stuffs, and around 50 C when gaming. I haven't seen a temp higher than 60 C yet with this thing, and that was when playing Civilization V, which is a pretty CPU-intensive game. My turns went at a reasonable pace and the DX11 version didn't slow my rig down at all, which was amazing. The stock cooler sucked ass. 50 C when doing internets things and lol 84 C when gaming. So yeah. If you're going to build (or already have one built), I'd recommend this thing. It really is as good as all the reviews say, and it's so easy to install that your pet could do it. It's normally $100 on Newegg, but it's a part you should be able to use in many builds, so in the long run it might be the most economical purchase you can make for a gaming PC. Requires a decent size case, but I'd assume you guys wouldn't buy a tiny one. =p Also, 251 turn culture victory with Venice. I'm finally satisfied. I probably could have won in around 240 turns (didn't send out my musicians to play concert tours soon enough), but I'll take this. Venice is ridiculously OP btw. They get double everyone else's trade routes, so they're swimming in money once they can trade. I generally build wonders that fit my wincon and buy any building/trade unit I need in like 2-5 turns. As for other games, I need to download Mass Effect 3 and the Bioshock series so I can finally start them. I spent a decent amount on ME3 and Infinite, so might as well start them sooner than later. While I'm downloading that shit at night, I'll be playing the Digital Devil Saga games (and/or reading books, I guess). |
