I started Mass Effect years ago, got about ten hours in, then lost my save because my laptop died. I just started a new game with a new character (FemShep this time) so hopefully I'll make it to the end now. |

Hope you will, Mass Effect 1 is insanely good, one of the best series of games I've ever played. |

Life is Strange, episode 2. I had to buy episodes 2-5 all at once, which is kind of an downer, but whatever. Episode 1 was great and got me invested in these characters/events, so paying $17 for the last four eps isn't bad. The first half or so of this episode is about proving you can reverse time, which of course is done with some minigames. They're not very challenging, but they are tedious and prevent you from getting to the best parts of the episode. There's also a bit of ludonarrative dissonance here: You can reverse time all you want for most of the chapter, until OOPS BLOODY NOSE because PLOT. This factors in at the end of the episode. The drama in this episode gets ratcheted up to 11. The biggest series of choices yet takes your ability to reverse time away from you, except it's fifteen minutes from the end of the episode, so all you'd replay are those fifteen minutes if you wish to change what happens. I think it'd have an bigger impact if undoing the choice were harder/took more time (so you'd be more tempted to stick with it, no matter what happens), but it also wouldn't make narrative sense, since the climax is near the end of every story ever. Idk how you'd balance gameplay and narrative here. Choices I made in episode one did have an effect, but I don't feel like any of them have bitten me in the ass (or conversely, helped me) yet. There are still three episodes, so maybe they do later on. Who knows? It's a bit slower-paced than the first episode is IMO, but it builds on what was established already and gives you time to get to know other characters. I enjoyed the episode. Outside of those damnable minigames, I do feel it was better than the first. Also Cities: Skylines. I needed a new city builder in my life. There hasn't been a truly great one since SC4. SC3000 is bae though. SimCity 2013 was, well, a disaster, but even that disaster had a few good ideas that I'd have liked to see in a SimCity proper. This game feels like SimCity 4.5, which isn't a bad thing. The very act of playing the game feels like playing SimCity. The controls are so damn similar, probably because they fucking work. Many of the same strategies I used in previous SimCity titles still work here, like not building police/fire/medical stuffs until the citizens clamor for it. The only real change I've found is that some policies are EXPENSIVE to enact, but that's why you have an budget window. I'm hard-pressed to think of anything original that this game does, but the city builder formula was never in need of INNOVATION anyway. Maybe mod support, since it seems that no other game in the genre has had the community this does. Old games did support mods, but Steam has made adding mods to your games the easiest thing in the world. Workshop support is much appreciated, though I like playing a vanilla game for an while. In the end, it's just a new, fun city builder that's familiar, and that's all the SimCity fanbase ever really wanted. Edited by Romanticide, Apr 2 2015, 08:23 PM.

Got Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze as my platinum reward. It was by far the best option, since the only other Wii U title available was NES Remix 2 (lol) and I have a rain check for $15 Animal Crossing. I guess Mario Kart 7 would have been a decent option if nothing else had been available, but that was also $15 the other week. *shrug* Not really much to say about this except that it's more Donkey Kong Country Returns. That game was pretty damn good, and this one looks to be just as good, if not better in some ways. The graphics are obviously better, but some of the new level designs are ridiculous. Sawmill Thrill is that rarest of rarities: a fun mine cart level, in large part because the design is so amazing. The game does feel a bit easier at this moment, in large part because lives are EVERYWHERE, but maybe this game turns it up to 11 after the first three or so worlds like its predecessor. I hope it does; that's why DKCR was so damn fun. |

Pokemon Rumble World. You can't really discuss this game without mentioning the F2P model. I think it's done well, but I also think that if you're not willing to pour the $30 into this game, even if only piece by piece, you might as well pass. Getting free diamonds is possible, but the daily quests will give you like 11 at most (and they get tougher as you go), and that's not feasible even when you get into the "mid-game", however you want to define that. Balloons start to cost 70+ diamonds, there are useful extras that cost 10+ diamonds, stopping the roulette where you wish costs two diamonds, reviving to catch that sparkly boss costs two diamonds... Yeah. The game relies upon diamonds, and if you don't buy them at some point, you're not going to make a lot of progress. HOWEVER. You can only buy 3000 diamonds, which you can do right away for $30, or over time. Once you do, you'll get a VIP ticket that reduces the costs of re-inflating balloons to one diamond and you'll get a mine that gives you 20 free diamonds per day. It's essentially "buying the game", insofar as you can with a F2P title. I feel that if you spend the maximum, all the bullshit should be removed, but whatever. These are still decent perks. Outside of the F2P model, it's more Pokemon Rumble. I enjoy the core gameplay even if it's really mindless, but I can't blame you if you don't because there's a lot of hitting A/B and a lot of luck involved in catching rarer Pokemon. There's also that fucking roulette that has screwed me out of a chance to catch Pokes like Latias more than once. This said, I'm at ~260 Pokemon captured and I'm probably going to hit a wall very soon unless I pour some more money into it. I'll do other things and come back when I get more money. It's fun, but not something I feel I have to pour $30 into all at once. |

My final exams start next week so I thought starting Mass Effect 2 now would be a good idea. First impressions after completing the prologue missions: THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL COMPARED TO THE FIRST ONE. Also, it seems a lot smoother for some reason. As for actual gameplay stuff, idk, haven't done much yet. I hear a lot of the RPG elements are really simplified in this one, though, and I've already seen from the level-up screen that different ammo types are now an ability instead of weapon mods. Kinda weird, but I'd rather have that than constantly getting extra mods that I don't need like in ME1. As for the characters, Jacob seems cool, which is nice since we share a name. Miranda seems like she'll be fun to work with. And the Illusive Man just reminds me of the Cigarette-Smoking Man from The X-Files (mainly because they're both men who smoke and are illusive) and that's all I really think about him right now. Curious to learn more. I just hope it doesn't focus on human stuff too much. I get that it's important, but I like dealing with the fate of the galaxy more, y'know? Humans can get annoying. |

Beat vanilla Dark Souls II again today with a battlemage type character (I think this was my 4th playthrough?) and now I'm finally going into the DLC stuff. It released almost a year ago, but I had DS2 fatigue back then, so I didn't feel like playing it. Pretty excited to experience some fresh content, dicked around a little and explored the starting area of the first part and so far it's pretty hard, and I'm not sure where to go, this is going to be good lol. Dark Souls 2 is sooooooooooooooo gooooooooooooood ommggg u guys |

With Kerbal Space Program out of Early Access, I decided to reinstall and take it for a fresh spin. Evidently, rocket science is still hard. |
