We should be getting really fast internet soonish, so I should be able to play with you guys without any big lag. :D

OVERWATCH THOUGHTS: It's really fun. But the game modes and style make it feel like a TF2 mod or maybe a Team Fortress 3 where instead of a few classes with a bunch of unique guns, you have a bunch of characters with a few unique abilities. That's not a bad thing, but I just don't want to spend $40 on something that feels so similar to a game that's been free to play for years. I probably will because of peer pressure, but I hope that means they'll support it for a while. That's probably not a concern though. Blizzard seems to support their popular stuff for a while. Even Diablo 2 got updates recently.

Man, I'm totally ok with dropping 40 bucks on it. So ok that I'm going to drop 60 bucks on it so I can get my lame Starcraft portraits and what have you.

whats an overwatch

Dropped to normal in Conquest because I had forgotten what it feels like to no-death a chapter in one night. I beat chapter 22 on hard after like two nights of trying, and then the enemies got into dwest's stash of meth or something, because LOL @ groups of 4+ enemies, all with 45+ HP, high stats outside of HP, great weapons, and the most annoying skills their classes could possibly have. I didn't think it could get harder and then the difficulty spikes still more. Exciting.

Could probably beat the game on hard, but at some point wasting an entire night on a fruitless endeavor gets tiring. I dunno why I stayed on hard as long as I did; it stopped being any fun after chapter 18 rly. Not like I get anything out of it besides ye olde bragging rights, and approximately nobody anywhere gives a shit.

I kind of wish there were a moderate difficulty or a better-balanced hard, whichever. Hard can be stupid, but normal feels a bit too easy when many late-game mooks have no skills whatsoever. I want some degree of challenge, but hard post-chapter 17 gets ludicrous. Could grind but I feel grinding defeats the purpose of picking a higher difficulty, not to mention it's no fun.

Eh, should finish the game this week, and at this point that's what I care about most. I'll probably pick up Birthright in June and Revelations in July.

Finished Final Fantasy II because I have too much free time right now.
Follow-up: I've now beaten the main story of Final Fantasy XIV.

(this post ended up being much longer than I expected)

Unless you count the main story that was released after the game came out. I've only done the main stuff that was available at launch. Anyway, there's more main story, but for now I'm working on obtaining a sort of ultimate weapon. There's a series of quests that first let you get a relic weapon (Bravura, for example), and then a quest to upgrade that, and then another quest which upgrades it into what I see as a higher-tier ultimate weapon (Bravura --> Ragnarok), known as a zenith weapon. Then there are several more quests for several upgrades for that, and eventually it gets upgraded to what they call an anima weapon (Ragnarok --> Ukonvasara). The in-between upgrades just add various prefixes and suffixes. Apparently it's all very tedious and grind-y, but getting the non-upgraded lowest-tier weapon is pretty straightforward so I'll at least do that. It's just annoying because it's an MMO, so they're constantly adding higher-level content, but they can't just make people's ultimate weapons obsolete, so they have to add quests to upgrade the stats by grinding the new content. You can get weapons with comparable stats through easier methods (dungeon drops) but they don't look as cool (they don't have particle effects) and I think you can somehow customize the stats on your personal ultimate weapon but I'm not sure how exactly.

As for my thoughts on the game, I enjoy it. You start out by selecting a class, but each character can level up every class in the game, so it's not too restrictive. At level 30, you can unlock a job if you have one class at level 30 and a specific secondary class at level 15 (for example: Marauder + Paladin = Warrior, Conjurer + Arcanist = White Mage). Each class/job also has its own quest line, which provides very good gear and abilities. It's basically mandatory to do them but I guess you don't have to.

Crafting and gathering also have their own classes (no jobs though), each with its own tools instead of weapons and non-armor forms of clothing. There's even abilities that affect your crafting/gathering output. I haven't done any crafting/gathering, but from what I've read, they seem to take a much more active approach to it than simply "click a tree. now you have wood. take it to a forge. congrats you made a helmet" like other MMO's or even RPG's in general. It sounds cool, but I just don't want to put the time into it when there's still so much to do for the one job I do play as. If the game didn't have a subscription, I'd put some time into it, but for now I just want to do one job, catch up with pre-expansion content, and maybe buy the expansion on sale in the future (otherwise it's $40 without any included game time).

The story's okay. It starts out dumb with people literally sending you out to kill LADYBUGS (gotta work your way up before you can kill rats), but eventually you kill some summons you're used to seeing from other FF's. Fun fact: They actually integrated the failure of the game's original release into the story for "A Realm Reborn"/2.0. Basically, the evil dude in the original game somehow imprisoned Bahamut (within himself, I think? to give him power? idk) and Bahamut got mad and killed everyone or something. Anyway, some people are destroying these gods/summons (known as "primals" or "eikons"), but they're very destructive so you want to stop them. Meanwhile, the Empire is building an Ultima Weapon to destroy the primals as well. Sounds great! Except they're also using it to take over the world because they're an empire and that's what empires do.

Graphics are the best I've seen in an MMO. Apparently that was one of the issues people had with 1.0. Some of the screenshots I've seen are very very ugly for 2012, but some aren't bad, and I'm not sure where the discrepancy is coming from, but whatever. It wouldn't be fair to compare FFXIV's graphics to stuff like WoW and Everquest, but I'd say FFXIV's graphics are technically better than Guild Wars 2's. I like GW2's art style more, though. It feels more warm/welcoming, if that makes any sense. XIV's not dark and oppressive or anything, but there's nothing really distinct about it, other than the occasional crystal formations, which are pretty.

As for combat, I guess it depends on your role. All classes fill one of three roles in dungeons: tank, healer, or DPS. The job I'm playing as, Warrior, basically just requires you make sure everything is hitting you, while also using a limited number of self-healing abilities. There are certain sequences of abilities that I end up using very often, but the dungeons and bosses I've encountered have surprisingly diverse battle mechanics/gimmicks, so it's not entirely mindless. And the endgame ones are supposed to be the interesting ones, so I probably haven't seen much yet.

Also, from what I've seen so far, the community's pretty friendly. I was intimidated the first time I went into a dungeon, but people are pretty helpful towards first-timers and don't yell at you if you die. I assume that only happens in the highest-level content if you mess up and ruin things for everyone. Anyway, I didn't expect to type nearly this much, but it's a cool game. I won't be subscribing during school but it's cool for now.

So I like Overwatch a lot, but since getting it it's become pretty clear that the game is borderline unplayable without a stack. Like worse than Dota in a single queue. The plus side is that the games are so short but the bad games are just excruciatingly awful.

Posting my Revelation pairings because I can, really. Yay eugenics! *Peri voice*

If anyone (so, Lightning/Marill afaik, unless anyone else picked up Fates) has thoughts, feel free to post 'em. It'll probably be a day or two before I get any kids in Revelation anyway. I didn't want to marry a kid or a Corrinsexual this go-around, so I'm obv playing a female avatar. Fairly set on Avvy/Kaden and Keaton/Camilla, but the rest is flexible.

I'm less confident as the list nears the end. I don't think the mothers I had available to me were very good at that point, which probably factors in a bit. I like Beruka and wish she were a better mom. Fuck Selena tho, tsunderes da wurst.

The site I used: https://inheritance-planner.herokuapp.com/

Corrin x Kaden
Hayato x Nyx
Leo x Sakura
Odin x Elise
Keaton x Camilla
Arthur x Kagero
Benny x Oboro
Xander x Charlotte
Ryoma x Hana
Takumi x Rinkah
Hinata x Hinoka
Saizo x Orochi
Subaki x Mozu
Azama x Effie
Laslow x Azura
Niles x Peri
Kaze x Beruka
Silas x Selena
Jakob x Setsuna

Got into the Pokemon Go beta. It's pretty cool - very unpolished, but works well. Living in Silicon Valley means there's plenty of landmarks and gyms, and I do most of my hunting at night so I can drive around to different hotspots. I mean, it's generally Pidgeys and Rattatas all around (only gen 1 so far but there's achievements for catching Dark pokemon, of which there are none in gen 1), but I've found a few more "exotic" ones. The battle system's a little unfinished and there isn't much to do with your Pokemon once you DO catch them but it's fun nonetheless.
