The Shawshank Redemption One of the few dramatic movies I like. Some of my favourite parts include where the guys are drinking beer on the roof, and when andy played the opera music over the loudspeakers. But the best part is the entire last 45 minutes, especially when they reveal what happened in andy duphrenes last night in prison. I highly recommend every one of you see this movie at least once. |

Horrible Bosses. I only have two things to say about it: - I didn't choose to watch it. - The "Bosses" part of the title was not necessary at all. |

I didn't think it was terrible. It was overdone, but still better than most comedies that have come out in the past five years. I totally thought Jennifer Aniston was Rashida Jones the whole movie. |

Just watched "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", I've actually never seen it before. It was a great movie, very nice, Christmassy and cozy. :3 |

I actually didn't like that movie all that much. The jokes were nearly all predictable and cringey when they didn't need to be. |

Apparently I haven't done one of these since October 30th, so this'll be long. I also watched one season of The Walking Dead, three of Breaking Bad, and two of Twin Peaks in that time though, and I don't review TV shows, so it won't be as long as you'd think. Also, I'm giving rankings out of ten now. So there's that. If it seems like the written review doesn't make sense with the rating, it's probably because the review didn't mention all of my thoughts. The rating is more reliable. The Last House of the Left (original)-Ummm...okay. It's really not 'scary', it's just fucked up. It's not a great movie, but it's hard to say that it has no point or isn't powerful, even if it's fairly shoddy. 6/10 Nights of Cabiria-Another Fellini work. For a while I was fairly indifferent about it, but the hypnosis show onward was really good, and reflects backwards on the first parts. I loved the ending. It's a weird happy-sad. 8/10 Insidious-For some reason, I actually thought this was scary. It's gets lambasted not by critics, but by normal moviegoers a lot. A lot of them are liars. It's not over-reliant on jump scares. What they do get right is that once the second half tries to explain the first half, it gets really weighted down and pretty much just stupid. The ending is awful. 7/10 Once Upon a Time in the West-This movie left me with two feelings. One, it's a western and yet it didn't force me to hate it with clichés. I thank the cinematography because it was fly. Two, it was super unnecessarily complicated. A lot of it had nothing to do with other parts. It got hard to follow because there were multiple irrelevant events going on. 8/10 Kagemusha-It wasn't a bad movie, but oh my god it was boring. I'll still watch other Akira Kurosawa movies because he's supposed to be amazing and this isn't one of his renowned movies anyway, but this was just...dull. 7/10 Persona-I loved this movie mostly. What I didn't love was the way it forced itself to be a metaphor at the end. It could've ended normally and also been a metaphor, but it felt like it had to make it impossible for the movie to be taken literally and toy with itself. Whatever, it's still good. 9/10 Hour of the Wolf-I should stop watching untouted movies by prestigious directors. It's Ingmar Bergman just like Persona, except it's really weird and doesn't make a ton of sense. The surrealist scene was cool, especially with how it contrasted characters' earlier appearances, but fuck if I can figure out what it meant. 6/10 Scarface-I don't get why the 'little friend' line is why people remember this movie. I personally found chainsawing someone's arm off in a bathtub or hanging someone from a helicopter to be more memorable. I have weird feelings about this movie. It was great, but I didn't get into that much. 8/10 The Game-It's just for fun. There's no point, there's no deeper meaning, there are hardly any relevant emotions; it's just one gigantic mindfuck of a movie. And it is fun, and mindfuck-y. But the end seems like it undoes any real significance that the movie had had and makes it really superficial. 7/10 Girl, Interrupted-It's essentially One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, except in a women's ward and without an amazing end scene. I liked it, but the further it went the more it died. I like Winona Ryder. 7/10 Carrie (original)-The impressive thing about this movie is that I knew what happened, and I've seen the remake, and it still managed to surprise me. Also, lol@"okay for 14+" on Netflix when it starts with a locker room full of naked teenagers, one of which has her period in the shower. 8/10 Edward ScissorhandsThis movie is overblown. It's really only notable to me for two reasons: it's a really weird concept; it's the only time Tim Burton got to satire normal life. The actual story is truly pretty mundane. 6/10 Videodrome-Why is Cronenberg so famous? All of his movies revel in a disturbing human-mutation gross-out factor. Yeah, Videodrome's point is so obvious it slaps you repeatedly in the face, but that hardly compensates for watching a mouth get ripped in James Woods's stomach that he can place things in. 6/10 Them (Ils)-It's a French indie horror movie; not the movie about giant ants from the 50's. I give this movie mad props for being a throwback to old school horror where the tension was the fear, but unfortunately it tried to play for way too long off a single tension. The problem there is, if you never felt the suspense, the ensuing scene was just kind of annoying. That was the case with me and the last twenty or so minutes. The ending is plenty fucked up though. 6/10 Heathers-Oh, how I love this movie. It's so dark, funny, and super easily quotable. I don't really have a ton to say otherwise. 9/10 Apocalypse Now-I'll put it with Full Metal Jacket in the elusive category of war movies I actually like. But I didn't love every part of it. The ending strangely enough killed itself. It was like the climax was the calmest part of the movie. And there's just something I didn't like about the beginning. 8/10 American Beauty-I had super high expectations for this movie, and they didn't fail me. It's hysterical, yet twisted and with great emotional performances. It has the capability to be funny, sad, and powerful. Kevin Spacey is pretty much my hero. 10/10 Leon: The Professional-Um. Well. Some of the acting was off, some of the dialogue was cheesy, and there were some actions sequences that were totally unbelievable, and yet it's hard to forget Natalie Portman standing at the door quietly begging for the strange French hitman to let her in after she walks past her dead family and the people who killed them. I liked it more than it sounds like, but the writing could've used some work. 8/10 Synecdoche, New York-This review is painful for me to write because of how much I loved Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Being John Malkovich, but oh my god, what happened, Charlie Kaufman. This movie is as painfully symbolic as 2001, which is not a good thing. I cannot stand when movies only exist as a collection of allegories and make absolutely no sense on their own. It shows no talent at all in the writing. I liked when the play finally started and it blurred the lines between the play and reality, but things like paying an eternally on fire house and the timeline skipping around with no explanation made it so so so annoying. I didn't even fall for Hoffman's performance, which is sad. 5/10 Primer-Yes, this movie is confusing. No, it's no so confusing that it's impossible to ever understand and isn't possible to appreciate. I had to get help understanding the logistics of how the machine worked and what the failsafe did, but that was really it. You do need to watch it twice to totally get it, but you can understand what happened at least in one view. 8/10 12 Angry Men (original)-Oh fuck yeah. I wasn't really anticipating this movie that much. I knew it was supposed to be good, but I was really doubting how much I would like it. That changed in the knife discussion scene. Essentially the entire movie takes place in one room with no action, and only 12 characters, and yet it's insanely clever and really interesting. Even my sister who hates B&W movies liked it. 10/10 Taxi Driver-Wow. I was expecting so much more. So, so, so much more. It just feels so empty. It was good. It just wasn't a classic. It has that thing where when you think about what happened, it was good, but when you watch it, none of the basic concepts really play out all that well. Also, I wanted to stab Jodie Foster; that was a terrible performance. I'm coming to find that I don't like Scorsese. At least it was better than Raging Bull. 6/10 |
