I meant the book, though I heard the movie was fantastic. Katniss's actress is actually from my hometown, believe it or not. |

Maaaaaybe it's just me, but I'd like to care about most of the characters, not just one. Anyways, according to Facebook, I've had more friends see it now. So now instead of knowing six girls who saw it, I know seven girls and two guys. The seventh girl's Facebook post about it pretty much just said it was good but the book was better (expected). The guys both said they didn't like it and didn't get the hype, but hadn't read the books. I'll probably end up watching/reading it sometime, but I don't really feel rushed to see it right now. And I did assume it was going to have a lot of teen romance type stuff in it, since it seemed to be aimed at teens and Twilight was successful, so it's good to know that it's not all that. |

The romance section is very well done and open to a lot of interpretation, actually. I assume the sequels will end up resolving it or whatever. There are other characters that you do feel for, but everything is told from Katniss's point of view with very occasional exceptions. There isn't any monologue, and in the actual Games, you only ever know where Katniss is and what she's doing, which adds a nice sense of loneliness. |

The romance is less cheesy than it sounds, but explaining why would give away some minor plots of the plot. And the Gale thing is pretty subdued. It might be more agitating in the second. If you don't like Rue, I will set your whole family on fire in your sleep. But Wes Bentley's beard was the best character. |

Rue was epic. Didn't know the guy's name, but I assume you're referring to the mentor and his beard. Best character ever. |

throughout all three books, Rue makes a major impact. to those of you who saw the movie/already read the book:
you already know that Peeta and Katniss survived the Hunger Games by defying the Capitol with the berries. Now that they won, they have to go on their annual Victory Tour, meaning they have to go to each district and make a speech to everyone. Rue plays a big impact when they get to district 11.
Collins got a lot of criticism from the first HG novel. She worked hard to improve on the next one, and she did extremely well. This Hunger Games movie does not interest me nearly as much as Catching Fire is going to. That is going to be the best one of the three and anyone who isn't entirely sold on the Hunger Games will be by the time the next movie comes out. Finnick Odair needs to be played by Ian Somerhalder to gain maximum awesomeness. |

wat Anyways, my book club in Lit is reading the series for, well book club (despite the fact that the other members already read it). So I'll probably get the series off Amazon today or something. Then I'll watch the movie. Also, the Blind Side was on last night. I love that movie. |

its not even a "small" spoiler. if you read the books plot summary, it appears there to tell you about what the second book is about. its as big of a spoiler as telling you the main characters name. |

Wes Bentley played Seneca Crane, so the Gamemaker with the swirly, fiery, pointy beard. Moving on from The Hunger Games, I've gone Criterion lately, so prepare yourselves for avant-garde black and white foreign films. These two are as non-indie as avant-garde black and white foreign films can be if that makes it better. Rashomon-It's a story about the same story being told four times in completely different ways. The thing is that only like one of the stories is actually interesting. I think I fell asleep, but don't really remember. The people telling the stories had their own plot arch that didn't really make any sense with the stories they were telling, and I didn't know why they were both there. They didn't really correlate. The acting gets applauded a lot. I hated it. The random overdone laughter makes sense with the narrative, but it's annoying and fake. Akira Kurosawa is supposed to be a BAMF, but between this and Kagemusha (which was better at least), I'm hesitant. If Seven Samurai doesn't enthrall me with its 3.5 hours of swordfighting, then I'm just gonna give up on him and throw him into the vault of prestigious directors I dislike with Martin Scorsese. 6/10 The Seventh Seal-Probably more recognizable, it's that movie where a guy plays chess with Death. Also with a famous director (Ingmar Bergman), it was so much better that I don't even know how to describe it. First of all, I didn't fall asleep. There's also the fact that despite there being a lot of symbolism I'm sure I missed, the struggle and uncertainty of religion and and afterlife was relateable and understandable. I still haven't figured out what Rashomon was trying to say. Jöns is pretty much the most awesome character ever but all of the actors were good, and Bergman is now one of my favorite directors. 9/10 |

Alrighty then... Thor - So, I've never been all that big on comics. Didn't really care to get into them. Which is a bit of a shame, because I like a lot of comic book related things now, specifically comic book movies. Now, this whole Avengers project wouldn't have been so interesting a few years ago, because, other than Iron Man, I didn't really know or care for the other members of Captain America, Thor, The Hulk, Hawkeye, or Black Widow. I wouldn't have known who Loki or The Red Skull were. And I wouldn't have cared about how crazy this entire scheme was. However, after about four years, Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Captain America, The Town, Fight Club, a couple years of self-loathing, and a whole lot of wasted man hours on the internet, specifically watching a geek with a love for sci-fi and comic books review movies and talk about all other things geek, movie, or video game related, I am now completely anticipating Avengers. I now totally care about The Avengers, the fact that Hawkeye is being played by fucking Jeremy Renner, the fact that Bruce Banner aka The Incredible Hulk isn't being played by fucking Edward Norton, Cap's system shock of being a WW2 hero stuck in the modern day, and all that other stuff that will set back the loss of my virginity a few more years. Anyways, Thor is a whole bunch of fun. The story of the space viking and his magic hammer doesn't need to be made anymore complicated than that, and thankfully, it isn't. The action is great and characters are likable. So if you're into this thing and haven't seen it, check it out. Also... Zombieland - Zombieland is great. If you haven't seen it, change that. And if you didn't like it, you must be stupid. |

Moneyball - I lurved this movie. Brad Pitt was chill and Jonah Hill was funny, but not in the way he has been in the past. Hunger Games - ohmahgawd this movie. I understand the hype now. Also, if this movie doesn't win the Oscars for Best Set/Costuming/Art/etc I will be very surprised. They did so good with the visuals. Super Troopers - lol this movie. I watched it a like, midnight, so maybe that's why I thought it was so funny, but really I just like stupid comedies. |

Hey, I'm writing reviews about movies you might actually consider seeing? What is this? They're longer for the fact that you might care. Melancholia-Better known as that dramatic indie movie with Kirsten Dunst wearing a wedding dress in a stream that was glued to RT and iMDB's homepages last year. What you think it is is a movie about two sisters' strained relationship becoming more strained by a planet subtly named Melancholia probably inevitably crashing into Earth. That's what all the plot summaries say. That's a total lie. What it's actually about is depression. It's so honest and dark in its study of Kirsten Dunst's maddening depression that it's hard and kind of annoying to watch because it's so uncomfortable. What threw me off was that that didn't really stay consistent. It's broken into two parts. One part is about the depressed sister, the second is about the other sister who's trying to provide for and help the depressed one. The thing is that the namesake Melancholia, which is the most blunt metaphor for looming depression ever, is only ever even MENTIONED in the second part. The entire first part about Kirsten Dunst's really awkward wedding reception, which leaves you wondering, "Hey, where's that apocalypse I saw in the trailer?" The first part especially gets pretty dull in some places, but is occasionally picked up with a slice of melodrama, or manic depressive craziness. The second part with armageddon is kind of hard to understand. The movie is largely a set of metaphors, and more than just the planet explosion one. It's not always easy to figure out the metaphors though. What sets this above movies like 2001 and Synecdoche, New York though, is that instead of being an array of metaphors in wolves' clothing, the storyline really does make sense without overanalyzing it. It's just not very purposeful if you don't dig deeper. Kirsten Dunst and co. (including Kiefer Sutherland) all give good performances, and the effects are visionary, but the those shouldn't be a turn on for this. If you watch it for those reasons, you will be bored out of your mind. Remember when you considering watching it that it is at heart an art film. It just happens to have a naked Kirsten Dunst. 7/10 The Cabin in the Woods-Another movie that was fairly grossly misadvertised, but I think this one was on purpose. It seems like the most clichéd horror movie ever. And that's the point. It's hard to review this without giving away precious spoilers, so I'll be fairly vague and then specify within the confines of a spoiler box. What you need to know about this movie walking in is that it's not meant to be taken totally seriously. My theater didn't know that, so I was the only one awkwardly giggling for a long while. There are jokes (some meta). There are lots of references to other horror movies. There's also shitton of blood and violence. I wouldn't call this unwatchably graphic by any stretch, especially for horror aficionados, but it would probably have some head-turning moments for non-horror-fans. If you're considering seeing this movie, I would advise reading as little as possible about it, because spoilers are everywhere, yo.
It was sad to me that my theater missed the point so much. It's made so obviously, and it was still obvious that people didn't get it, which is pretty ironic. The point is that movie audiences (the ancient gods) have settled on a formula. They need a particular thing to be done in a particular order in order to like a horror movie. The company (film companies) gather up groups of people, make them fit these stereotypical personalities, and then violently slaughter them according to popular trends to appease their customers. People have shown what they like in horror, and that's all that's ever done anymore. The point in the movie is to show how unoriginal and uninteresting horror movies have become. Production companies all follow this exact formula, with these exact people, to make the exact same movie, or the world will end. Literally. Rather than defying any of the conventions it makes fun of, Cabin decides to take them, and...I already said, make fun of them. It actually functions a lot like an apology for modern horror flicks.
If you're expecting to be truly scared, you'll be disappointed. If you're expecting a stupid, superficial splatterfest, that's what you'll get. You have to actually understand what the movie is doing in order to appreciate it. Trust me, it's not hard at all to get. And if you're missing parts after you see it, read the spoiler. Oh, and good acting and gore effects. The CGI is a little off in the superduperuberinsanely bloody showdown scene near the end, but that's not really the important part. The pacing kinda threw me at the end, as well as the ancient ones vibe, but it's overlookable with its meaning. 8/10 |

Good to see a good review of Cabin. I'm planning on seeing it, but I wanted to wait past the first weekend to see if it was good or not. Expected it to be good (Whedon), but I did think it looked like the "most clichéd horror movie ever" from the trailers except for that glowy force field thing. |
