Had to go earlier so I couldn't finish my post. Aaanyways. X-Men: Pretty cool. Not a fan of Rogue's power, but I guess it's the point of the whole movie, so eh. X2: Hmmmm I liked it more than the first. Rogue's power seemed like even more of a nuisance, and she only had to use it once because a guy was being stupid. Some other parts annoyed me too.
I felt like Jean's death could have been avoided. Ever since they mentioned the floodgates, I was thinking, "Oh, they're gonna break open, and then that's gonna be Bobby's/Iceman's one shining moment where he freezes it and saves everyone." But no. INSTEAD, they get the girl who can't fly (Rogue) to fly the jet. So she breaks part of it, conveniently a part that prevents it from taking off that can only be fixed on the outside, that APPARENTLY can't be fixed with Jean's psychic powers, but she can go out, fix it, and then get herself killed trying to hold back the water from the jet. SO instead, Bobby's shining moment was when he chilled Wolverine's drink for him. Ah well. The movie was fine.
|

Estimated time of watching BSG: 4.63 years. Srsly. Especially if I'm going at the rate I'm at now. It's definitely on my list, but there are still a few shows ahead of it. |

While on the 10 hour plane rides to and from Germany I was able to see a few movies. Tower Heist - surprisingly, a very good movie, and one of the funniest things I've seen (live-action) Eddie Murphy in in a long while. I liked it. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - I'm going to agree with Asfan's sentiments on this film. I loved the character development, all the actors were great, it was funny, it was nice, just a good all around movie. All the main actors I recognized, but couldn't put names to them at first. It's hilarious to see Professor McGonagall as a racist old lady in a wheel-chair. And for Doctor Who fans: Penelope Wilton who played Harriett Jones is in it. The Shining - this was the first time I had seen the film in full. As with Kubrick's other works, I love it. I wasn't really scared by it, but maybe watching it on a fully lit airplane on a tiny screen isn't exactly the best setting for that. Anyways, great performance by Nicholson as always, loved it. |

Well, another big summer movie release will happen this friday (the dark knight rises), but unfortunately I will not be able to see it on friday knight (pun intended)! However I do fully intend on seeing it next week sometime. In the meantime however, I have been getting ready by watching Batman Begins, and The Dark Knight! Batman Begins I loved how they really took the time to get into the roots of bruce wayne, and how he became "the batman", what with his training by the great ras al ghul.I think they could have done a little more with ras al ghul and showed off his lazarus pit, but otherwise his character was portrayed pretty well. The scarecrow was a nice addition for a second villain, and I liked how they left the obvious giveaway at the end as to who the next villain will be in the dark knight. 8.5/10 The Dark Knight Movie sequels typically either do really well or really bad compared to the original. Fortunatelly, this one far exceeds batman begins. This joker is the best superhero movie supervillain IMO. The city is once again thrown into utter and complete chaos by the joker. The harvey dent character was done really well too. Massive explosions, car chases, and "the batman" kicking a whole lotta ass make this a phenomenal superhero movie. 10/10 Yeah, I can't wait to see the dark knight rises!!! |

Yesterday, I finally saw Moonrise Kingdom. I have no idea how to even describe this movie. It's a quirky, vivid, and unique story of young love and the ups and downs of said love. The cast is great, featuring stars such as Edward Norton, Tilda Swinton, Bruce Willis, and Bill Murray. The two leads, Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward, are relatively new to acting, but both deliver stellar performances. This movie is definitely one of director Wes Anderson's more accessible movies, as it is not nearly as weird as The Royal Tenenbaums or The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou. I would definitely recommend seeing it if you can, as it is a limited theater release. I give it a 9/10. |

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES WAS AWESOME.
ALTHOUGH I DIDN'T LIKE THAT THE MOVIE ENDED BY REVEALING THAT JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT (OFFICER BLAKE) IS INDEED ROBIN. I MEAN, THAT'S LIKE ENDING A TRILOGY BY OPENING UP SO MANY POSSIBILITIES. THAT JUST ANNOYS ME. I MEAN IT MAKES SENSE AND ALL, BUT I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HE'S GOING TO DO AS ROBIN. HAS GOTHAM BEEN SAVED IN THE NOLAN BATMAN UNIVERSE? OR WILL THERE STILL BE CRIME FOR ROBIN TO TAKE CARE OF? I KINDA FIGURED HE'D BECOME THE NEXT "BATMAN" WHEN HE THREW AWAY HIS GUN, BUT SINCE HE DIDN'T GET TO *DO* ANYTHING AS ROBIN, I JUST DON'T LIKE THAT. THAT AND, THOUGH I HAVEN'T READ THE COMICS, I ALWAYS THOUGHT ROBIN WAS A SIDEKICK. HOW CAN YOU BE A SIDEKICK TO SOMEONE WHO IS RELAXING IN ITALY WHILE YOU ARE IN A NEW YORK-INSPIRED CITY? OH WELL. GREAT MOVIE.
|

So today, I went to work six hours early to watch three movies before my shift started. In order of when I saw them: Beasts of the Southern Wild: I'll just say it: the best movie I have seen in at least a year. And if we're going by new releases, probably at least two since last year wasn't that great (though I've still not seen Moneyball in its entirety). Exceeded all expectations. What's shocking is that this is apparently a first-time thing for the two main characters and the director. The acting was great. Best child performance I've ever seen. The directing, and especially the cinematography, might just have been better. The score was the best I've heard in a long time. It seems to be a love-it-or-hate-it movie. Some people at my theater have said it's awful. But if you love it, it's incredible. A co-worker told me she liked it more than The Dark Knight Rises. This really is what I'd call a must-see movie. Manly tears were shed. Maybe it'd even make my T10 overall. I don't know exactly what those all are though. And one last thing: the first five to ten minutes are about as good as anything I've seen in film. Moonrise Kingdom: I was a little bit disappointed here. It wasn't bad, but everyone built it up to be so good. It was certainly unique stylistically, but until the end, it seemed to be wandering aimlessly. Before that, it seemed kind of pointless. Maybe that would make it better the second time, I don't know. But even with the ending wrapping everything up and explaining (sorta) most of it, I wasn't really left with anything to ponder. And I know it was supposed to be awkward a lot of the time, but I felt that at times it was a little too awkward. Of course, most of the acting was really good with all the stars in it. I'm surprised Norton hasn't gotten more praise. It seems to be mostly Willis and Murray. I thought Norton was as good as anyone. As for the two main children, I'm not sure if their performances were just a little off or Anderson wanted them to be as weird as the movie. It was a solid movie with some very strong moments, but I expected more. Bernie: This one, unlike the other two, pretty much met expectations and didn't do much more. Hadn't seen a comedy for a while, but it was a good one to wait for. The bad news is that there wasn't too much outside of the comedy to keep it going (especially if you know what happens- something I don't say about every movie). The good news is that it had more funny moments than any other comedy I can think of. And the funny moments actually were good instead of being just "Yeah, I guess that joke was all right." One thing that did stand out though was Jack Black's performance. Who knew he could pull off effeminate Christian so well? The other part that I can think of that made it good was actually semi-seriously making the audience wonder if certain crimes under certain circumstances (contributing to and following the crime) deserve lesser punishment. Of course, since I'm sure some of it is fictionalized, there might be some alteration to what happened, but I'll assume what happened in the movie resembles what happened in real life at least a little bit. Some things in it, Texans probably would find funnier than people from other areas, but I think y'all outsiders would have a good time too. |

Headhunters is a Swedish film, and therefore it is foreign so if you don't like subtitles, then gtfo. But it is a film that surprised me. Basically, it is a giant game of cat and mouse between an art thief and a former military tracking specialist. There are definitely suspenseful moments and some moments that will make you say "WTF?" just because of the pure weirdness. It has a a lot of substance, and is very entertaining. Sometimes you have to wrack your brain to put all the pieces together though, as there is so much going on at one time, and that's my fault with this movie. Nevertheless, it's a great movie and I definitely recommend it. I may have seen this movie a couple of months ago, but it really touched me and I recently came back into contact with it so I thought I should write about it. The Grey is a somber yet action filled movie that regards a group of hunters that end up in a plane crash over the arctic tundra. A pack of wolves quickly catches on, and the hunters get picked off one by one. The movie conveys a perfect sense of the wolves being there, and not seen, which adds greatly to the suspense. Liam Neeson is fantastic, I cannot stress enough, and he definitely delivers one of the best performances of his career. It also may be one of the saddest movies I have ever seen, especially the ending, and I am not ashamed to say that I cried in this movie. Multiple times, actually. I absolutely would love basically everyone to see this movie, and it may remain one of my favorites for a while. |
