Oh, right, forgot to explain. We're only doing clear, on-screen deaths, just to be clear. We're including all character deaths, and working on a definition for character that includes all sentient beings that can be forced into a permanent incapacitated state. Basically, we're counting robot and zombie deaths if applicable. Doesn't look like it'll count for most of them. Regarding that list of yours, I actually had a bunch of those on my list of ones I'd prefer already. One guy is doing all of the LotR, SW, Indiana Jones, and Kubrick stuff though. In addition to misc other things. I did pick Seven Samurai on my list, and some others that you also suggested, but I did not know that it was 3.5 hours long. I'm sure it'll be worth the length, but still. It's good to know I guess :P. Also, I didn't realize that Amélie was on the list twice. It has been randomly replaced by Lawrence of Arabia. EDIT: Also, if we do start running out of time for the movie-watching... I found this. The internet sure does have everything. |

I dunno, I didn't think Bicycle Thieves was too bad. It was a little slow and seemed to wander around a bit aimlessly, but it had its good moments. That got me to check my IMDb ratings to see what I have at the bottom. I had four movies at 4/10: Surveillance, Superbad, In Bruges, and Burn After Reading. Maybe I'd have to see it again, but I never understood why In Bruges was held in such high regard. |

I really didn't like Bicycle Thieves, but I don't think it's one of the worst movies ever. It's really dull and kind of inconsequential. Mostly though, I hate the ending. I get the poetry of it, but it's annoying poetry. You should count sex scenes instead of deaths. You'd get like 12 from Amélie assuming you count the montage scene as separate instances. You'll see what I mean. |

Sex scenes could actually be interesting as well. Also, we split up the movies today, and other people have movies they want to watch too so I ended up with: Double Indemnity The Silence of the Lambs (just saw it last week so I'll just check the death count online) Léon: The Professional The Godfather: Part II The Shawshank Redemption Braveheart Se7en Pulp Fiction Toy Story 3 Metropolis Gladiator The Third Man Psycho Seven Samurai Requiem for a Dream Alien Casablanca WALL-E North by Northwest Apocalypse Now The Green Mile Yeah, I've seen some of them already, but part of that was intentional. It's just easier to watch movies I have instead of either waiting to get them from Netflix or renting them online for $3. So that's how one other guy ended up with all of LotR, SW, and Indiana Jones. Also, my teacher was a bit concerned about us using IMDb because he said that, for lack of a better word, IMDb has a lot of fanboys. I'm sure there are plenty of people who are like "OMG BEST MOVIE EVER 10/10" but still, they have to get that opinion from somewhere, and maybe that is related to the number of deaths, so I think it's still a pretty fair project. We're just comparing it to its rank on IMDb, not the quality of the movie, because you can't really measure the latter. |

Oh yeah, IMDb is built out of completely sheepish fanboys. That's basically the point in the website. So...are you gonna watch The Godfather Part I also? |

So, for like Braveheart or something, are you going to count every death in every battle? Cause that might be very hard. At least in Lord of the Rings Gimli and Legolas count them for you. |

I've seen it already, but we won't be using it for this. Just Part II.
I'm going to try to. If I fail, there are others who haven't: http://www.moviebodycounts.com/Braveheart.htm |

So you're using 63 of the first 100, but not the first 63...? Is there a stats reason for that, or are you just spontaneous? |

We're using 63 because the teacher gave us these guidelines about sample and population sizes. For a population of 100 (here, the IMDb top 100) he recommended 63 (though today he actually said if we don't get through them all that's okay, but we fully intend to finish them all). I don't know the mathematical reasoning behind using a sample size of 63 for a population of 100, or 100 for 250, or any of the other numbers he had on the paper. BUT, we didn't use the top 63 because we had to choose randomly. Randomness just makes results better. Now I don't think randomness would make a big deal here, but hypothetically if more deaths directly cause a higher rating, then the top movies will all have many deaths. If we pick the top 63, then again, hypothetically, their death counts will all be fairly close to each other. If they're all close to each other, then we won't really see any difference between #1 and #63. Now even just using the population of 100 here is kinda small, but since the randomness should spread out the rankings a bit more, if it were true that more deaths = higher rating then we would see "Oh, movie #1 has 50 deaths, #7 has 48, #63 has 40, #80 has 20, #100 has 2" or something like that. Yes, that's exaggerated, but the point is that we don't know if there is a relationship like that. So by picking a random 63, we would get values from both the high end and low end and it would be easier to see that more deaths give a higher rating. Again, we're all pretty sure that more deaths do not directly cause a higher rating (but there can still be a relationship without one causing the other), but since we don't actually have numbers and proof yet, that's why we used a random selection. TL;DR: Yes. There's a statistical reason for that. |

So uh watched two of mine. Need to pick up the pace, but I'll have plenty of time for 2 a day during winter break which is two weeks so if I get 7 done by th -- anyway: The Shawshank Redemption -- Loved it. The ending, though... I don't know.
I just felt like the transition from "DARK CORRUPT PRISON GRITTINESS" to "happy isand paradise of love and opportunity" was too fast. Wouldn't want the movie to be longer (2h22m was enough IMO) but it felt too sudden for me anyway. I don't think there's much they could do about that, though.
Double Indemnity -- Wasn't a huge fan of the acting. It felt like 99% of the time, they just spat out their lines to get them over with, without any emotion. And they really should have had more emotion in the scenes that were supposed to be romantic, secretive/mysterious, etc. I thought the story was very good, though. Especially with Walter in Keyes' office with the main story being told as a flashback/confession and seeing how he gets there. |

I'm writing a speech about film noir, and Double Indemnity comes up like every 20 seconds in research. Because it's awesome. I can't judge sheepishness. You might just legitimately only like movies on the top 250. If you feel might you might be a sheep, you probably are. |
