Chris Nolan films usually get tons of nominations for the technical categories. Weird. Weird shake-ups abound there. 1. Moonrise Kingdom only for its screenplay. 2. A nine-year-old nominated for best actress. 3. A foreign film in Best Motion Picture. 4. Tons of awards for Beasts of the Southern Wild, which a lot of people thought would be shut out. 5. The Master three times for acting, but nothing else. Also, Ted's nomination was only for a song it had, so I don't take that as being too out-of-the-box. I could listen to the song and make a more fair judgment, but I don't want to. Predictions: Best Picture-Zero Dark Thirty Best Actor-Daniel Day-Lewis Best Actress-Jessica Chastain Supporting Actor-Tommy Lee Jones Supporting Actress-Anne Hathaway Best Director-Ang Lee Original Screenplay-Moonrise Kingdom Adapted Screenplay-Silver Linings Playbook Animated Film-ParaNorman Foreign Film-Amour* Cinematography-Life of Pi Visual Effects-The Avengers *I'm basing that off the fact that it was nominated for Best Picture, unlike every other nominee in that category, which I think means it wins by default. Also, I haven't seen MOST of those, but the Oscars are usually fairly predictable. |

Let's see... Picture: Lincoln Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis Actress: Jessica Chastain Supporting Actor: Tommy Lee Jones Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway Director: Steven Spielberg Original Screenplay: Django Unchained Adapted Screenplay: Silver Linings Playbook Animated: Wreck-It Ralph Foreign: Amour Cinematography: Life of Pi Visual Effects: Snow White and the Huntsman I disagree with a few of these choices, but that's cool. It happens. May change some of them after I see Zero Dark Thirty tomorrow. Posted Image |

One of the rare intelligent conversations on IMDB, which I wound up agreeing with. The Impossible was outstanding in that department. Even aside from the tsunami, they were really good. Everyone grimaced at all the injuries (especially Watts' leg). Which would be make-up, but it didn't even get a nomination for that. |

So my last two movies of the break: The Impossible Damn, this movie was intense. It was a lot grislier than I expected. I didn't think the injuries would have such an emphasis. There were lots of "urgh" kinds of noises from the audience. That kind where you see something gross and have to look away. Yeah. I'm surprised this movie wasn't rated R. Acting was fantastic. Naomi Watts would probably be my Oscar pick (Jessica Chastain is close though). I realize that Supporting Actor is one of the toughest fields this year, but Tom Holland was really good too and could be considered a snub. And, as always, Ewan McGregor did a great job. But as visually unnerving this was from the disturbing images, it really was just as emotionally intense, as you can imagine (not always sad, but intense nonetheless). So yeah, great movie. Bring tissues if you cry often during movies (I felt the waterworks starting up a few times). There was some audible sniffling. Zero Dark Thirty This was pretty much the most disappointing movie of the season for me. I was at least a little bit concerned that I would have problems with Lincoln before people quelled my fears. This one though, I expected to really enjoy. It just didn't really flow that well. It had time jumps over multiple years where pretty much everything would stay the same except for the main character's attitude. A lot of the time I just found myself not really caring about what was going on. Wasn't too engaging. Jessica Chastain was awesome and that was about it. A lot of the time the plot didn't go too in-depth. It just skimmed over a bunch of stuff. It's too bad. I really expected a lot more from this one. |

Star Trek (2009) -- I thought it was pretty good. Loved all the references to the original series. Birdemic: Shock and Terror -- omg this movie is so good. |

So Argo was a weird choice for Best Picture. |

I haven't seen it yet. Everyone I know who saw it seemed to think it deserved Best Picture, though. Sooo I watched a couple more Hitchcock movies. The Birds was pretty good. I think I was trying to think too much about why the birds were attacking, though. I probably should've treated it like a zombie movie or something where the point is that they are attacking, and why they are isn't as important (though the birds did seem like they wanted to eat people -- at least their eyes -- so I guess that's another zombie similarity). Watched Vertigo after that. I thought it was very good. So I've only seen four of his movies now, but I'd rank them Psycho = Vertigo > North by Northwest > The Birds. I also have Rear Window and Dial M for Murder on my Netflix DVD queue, but I might watch some other stuff first. For now, I just bumped The Cabin in the Woods above those two, but idk if I'll put anything else before them at the moment. |

Argo was a really good movie, but it's not one that screams Best Picture. It's fun to watch and really well made, but the depth to it is limited (and the end was pretty poor, I thought). I'm very glad I saw it and when put against Lincoln, the other possible winner, I'd give Argo my vote (though there were three other nominees I'd give it to over Argo, and I haven't even seen three of the nine). But it's just a weird choice for the Oscars since they usually prefer more artsy films. Argo was just a really good popcorn movie. Sure, maybe it was partly due to the snubbing of Ben Affleck, whose direction was the best I saw (never saw Life of Pi). Probably was. But even with all the hype surrounding it over the past month, I still thought they'd give it to Lincoln. |

Oh, I see what you mean. I haven't seen Argo, Lincoln, Life of Pi, Django, Les Mis, umm... or anything else that I assume was nominated. I don't know why. I wanted to see all of them (maybe not Life as Pi as much as the others 'cause I didn't know anything about it) when they were out. Oh well. I will. |

Yeah, nobody I know really wanted to see any...important movies this year. The only one I saw was Les Miserables. But hey, I could've gone to Movie 43 with tons of people. |

I'm sure you missed a great one there. If I didn't work at a movie theater, I probably wouldn't have seen any of them but Argo (if that even). I do want to see Life of Pi. It seems like an awesome visual experience (unfortunately, those are best in theaters). |

I forgot to post it here, but I went to the newest Die Hard movie last week. It was a good movie, but for a Die Hard film, it didn't really hold up. I would give it a die throw 3. The car chasing scene in the early part of the movie was fantastic, however all the boom boom and pew pew later on got tedious. It lacked that intense Die Hard feel that any of the previous movies provided. It's worth watching if you're a Die Hard fan, but overall it was a disappointment.. |

I saw it Sunday. I liked it. Yeah, McClane basically turned into Superman, but it's what I expected. I liked the nice little references they threw in like: Spoiler: click to toggle It wasn't the best Die Hard movie ever, but I liked it better than Die Hard With a Vengeance. |

You liked it more than the third one where they fuck shit up in New York? Are you sure you didn't mean Die Hard 2/4? @spoiler, yeah that made me smile. |
