The Great Gatsby Sucked. Absolutely blew chunks. Mostly. The confrontation scenes between Tom and Gatsby were moderately well done. About as well as I expected- didn't surpass expectations. Or maybe it was a combination of not having expectations at that point but still being disappointed by the movie that made it seem the way it did. I don't know. But most of the rest of the movie was awful. They took an already grandiose book and made it way over-the-top. Like the parties. Man, those were damn wild parties. Didn't buy them at all. Also,
Gatsby's death. What the hell? It was so too dramatic. Slow motion with that imposing music? Jesus. The slow motion was fine for Myrtle, but they took it to a new level with Gatsby.
And the hip-hop music, what the hell? Get '20s music or something. Or classical music. Or don't use music at all. I hated the modern twist on it. tl;dr this movie was way too over-the-top and you shouldn't waste your money on it. They destroyed a great novel. Star Trek Into Darkness COMPLETE OPPOSITE OF GATSBY THIS MOVIE WAS AWESOME. Like, really. The story was so well done. They did stuff I usually hate that lots of movies/TV shows do, and yeah, it was a little bit predictable at times, but that stuff actually worked.
Like with Kirk at the end and the whole "OMG HE'S DEAD" then "JK WE CAN REVIVE HIM," I hate it when shows do that. And it was obvious they were going to revive him with Khan's blood. But it worked. And I think what made it work was that it fit in so well with the storyline dealing with Spock's humanity.
And it's not even the kind of movie where you sit through it, occasionally rolling your eyes, and at the end realize it wasn't that bad (like I will do occasionally with Breaking Bad or Dexter) because it's wrapped up well. I thought they mostly avoided cliches pretty well and it was really entertaining. AND A MAINSTREAM MOVIE THAT HAS GREY AREAS WHAT IS THIS I DON'T EVEN. I liked this one a lot more than I remember liking the original (well, the 2009 Star Trek). Oh yeah, and this was my first real exposure to Benedict Cumberbatch. Very impressed. Zachary Quinto also did his best work I've seen him do (though that's not too much- 24, a small role in Six Feet Under, and the other Star Trek). I think this, so far, is my favorite movie of 2013. Frances Ha Probably the most original movie I've seen since Beasts of the Southern Wild last year. It was actually really interesting. It looks like it had a really low budget (can't find a figure anywhere). The sound and picture quality were quite a bit lower than ordinary films, which was probably amplified for me since I just saw Star Trek Into Darkness in IMAX a day before. But putting those issues aside, I thought this was a really good film. It was really quirky and often awkward (intentionally). One of the actresses I thought was pretty bad sometimes, but it could have just been the product of the quirky directing. In one scene, she seemed like she was just reciting her lines, paying no attention to the other actress. Part of me wants to give the film the benefit of the doubt, as it was a pretty subtle film (which contrasts the main character) at times, but the other part of me wonders if seemingly bad acting is justifiable as a subtlety. I don't know. But other than that one actress in a couple of scenes, it was pretty intriguing. I actually know someone who is very, very similar to the main character, so picturing her doing all the stuff in the movie made me laugh a bit. The dialogue was pretty funny (again, sometimes because of the awkwardness) and the characters were actually really enjoyable. I'd recommend this to you guys if you can find a nearby theater that is showing it. It surprised me that the majority of the theater seeing this was old people since it really was such a young-person movie. I'd say this is a pretty accurate representation of the movie, though maybe a little more cheerful than the actual movie. Hoping to see Mud, Kings of Summer, and maybe Stories We Tell before I leave. Don't think I'll be able to see Man of Steel, so hopefully it's still out when I get back. |

I saw Man of Steel. I liked it. It was better than I expected. I was worried that they would try to make it too dark/gritty (I never thought of Superman as a dark/gritty guy) but it wasn't too dark and it wasn't silly so that was good. Some parts felt like they kinda dragged on, though. I'm not going to spoil anything, but people kept telling Clark that he would "change the world". Yeah, that's true, but it seemed like at least five different people told him that in a row. In different scenes. I got the point the first time someone said it. Also, the end had a loooot of non-stop action, which I didn't really like. At one point, someone about three or four seats to my right shouted "OOOOOOHHHHHHHHH SHIT!" and I didn't mind 'cause the action was getting kinda boring/annoying up until that point. Anyway yeah pretty cool movie. |

Didn't see Mud, but I saw The East instead. So here's my last write-up for a while. Stories We Tell This was an interesting story. It's a documentary about a filmmaker trying to figure out who her biological father is by interviewing family and friends about her mother, who died when the filmmaker was young. I was surprised at how intense it got at one point, but I guess it's a good sign if a documentary can do that. I thought it was overall pretty interesting and cool with how easy and relaxed the interviewees were with the interviewer (it seems rare to find them so at-ease like they were in this one). Even on subjects that it seems weird to talk about with family (oral sex was brought up, for example, which was kind of weird), there seemed to be not much nervousness. But yeah, it was an interesting story (I would hesitate to use the word "gripping" though) and worth watching. The Kings of Summer I saw the huge cardboard poster in my theater for this and wanted to go see it. Then I saw the trailer and it looked really cheesy so I didn't want to see it. Then I saw that it was rated R and that sort of changed my perception of what it was going to be. It really looked like it was targeting the early teens/rebellious age group, but it couldn't really do that with an R rating. So I saw it, and even though it was a coming-of-age story that could appeal to teens, it did it without actually getting cheesy (and I think the stuff that led to the R-rating did make it more realistic, since teenagers days don't really live their lives in PG-13 manners most of the time, even if movies and TV shows depict it that way a lot of the time). But yeah, it was actually pretty funny at times (funniest movie I've seen since Silver Linings Playbook, but I guess that's not saying too much), it was well done, and IT WAS NOT CHEESY. COMPLETELY (sort of) UNEXPECTED. In case you forgot. I liked it. The East HEY GUYS IT'S AN AMERICAN MOVIE THAT ISN'T MORALLY BLACK-AND-WHITE. Actually I guess those have been getting more and more popular but I don't think I've seen eco-terrorists ever portrayed in such a non-terrible fashion. Not to say they were really the good guys, but hey, can't expect the filmmaker to go too far. The actors in this were actually subtly really good. There weren't too many scenes for them to be all flashy like the Oscars love, but they all had great roles (Patricia Clarkson is one of my favorite lesser-known actresses and it was cool to see her in a way different part) and did a nice job of executing them. The ending was a little flat, but other than that, really solid movie that was tense, weird, tender, and many other things. |

Saw This Is The End today. The pace is molasses-slow in the middle, but overall a very funny movie with a great ending. |

Finally getting back to movies on my Netflix DVD queue. But first... Much Ado About Nothing -- Yeah, I only saw this because of Joss Whedon, Alexis Denisof, Amy Acker, Clark Gregg, Nathan Fillion, and Sean Maher (yes, I know other actors have been in Whedon stuff too, but I don't care about them as much yet because I've only seen Fran Kranz in Cabin so far, and I haven't seen much of Tom Lenk in Buffy, but I'll see more of both and the other Dollhouse people). But anyway, it was so fun to watch. Everyone in it was great. Very funny. Django Unchained -- Also very fun to watch. I feel like Django could have had more lines, though. I loved Schultz, but I kinda expected Django to talk more since his name is in the title and everything. I thought Samuel L. Jackson was pretty good in it. I really hated his character (Stephen). Kiss Kiss Bang Bang -- I liked Iron Man 3, and this has both RDJ and Shane Black too so I thought I'd try it. It was better than I expected. I don't really have a lot to say about it, though. It was a fun movie, I guess. I think I just wanted to watch a couple fun movies because of watching GoT, The Wire, and BrBa. Just wanted some not-so-dark stuff. |

A Beautiful Mind. It was very good! I thought it was pretty sad at several points, but a friend of mine who watched it didn't think it was very sad. I read a bit about how accurate it was after I finished it, and apparently they left out some pretty big stuff, like the kid that Nash had with a nurse while he was a patient. And apparently Nash never took the pills, but in the movie they implied that he was taking them and then slowly stopped. Someone from the movie didn't want to make people think they could recover without medicine. Anyway, very good movie, do watch it if you get a chance. Also, Dexter is on "Long wait" on Netflix (gee I wonder why it's like the last season just started or something), so I put Blue Velvet, Elephant Man, and Mullholland Dr at the top of my queue. I Googled "david lynch viewing guide" since I've heard he has a style that you have to get used to first, and this was the order that was suggested... on Rate Your Music. I don't know what's up with that, but a couple other sites also recommended Blue Velvet first, so yeah. And I'm mainly doing this so I can watch Twin Peaks (and more Lynch, if I like him). |

So for this term, I have a film theory and criticism class which is awesome mostly because we'll be watching movies, which, mostly are classics. So far we've watched Living in Oblivion, Citizen Kane, Psycho, and Chungking Express. Out of all these movies, the one I liked most was Chungking Express. So yeah, can't wait for what other movies they have in store for us. Also, I'm planning on watching Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Prestige, Million Dollar Baby, Ghostbusters, every 90's Disney movies, and all of the Marvel Cinematic movies. |

I watched Oldboy last night. It started as a basic thriller pretty much, like the kind of movie that Liam Neeson would star in, except Korean. And then the last 30 minutes are just some of the most "holy shit" moments in cinema. I loved it. |

Watched Cabin in the Woods last night finally, and I must say.... Am I missing something here? A lot of people raved about this movie as well as critics but I felt the film was lackluster. I don't expect to be scared by horror movies, as I don't scare easily, so the novelty of this movie was good for me. Other than that... I expected the acting to be better considering it was not supposed to be your average horror movie, but sadly it wasn't. Unless the film was trying to be cliché on purpose, then all of the clichés in the movie would be fine. But since the story is what it is, with the corporation and stuff, shouldn't the movie feel realer? Granted, some of the things the corporation did MADE the kids act clichéd, but there are some scenes that the kids weren't even provoked into acting that way. Some of the scenes at the corporation felt awkward and out of place, kinda like they were trying too hard to be funny. The best part was near the end, when it payed tribute to all sorts of horror movies. I guess that's how you have to view this movie, as more of an homage than anything. 6/10. |

*hugs* As for Pwner, I think you are missing something. You sound like you're flashing back and forth on whether or not you understood the purpose. It IS an homage. The cliches are all there intentionally. It's a deconstruction of the horror genre. The point is to very tongue-in-cheek-ily explain why the same bland tropes pop up in every horror movie. And it does that while being a horror movie. Like Scream. I'm not sure I agree with your comment on the acting either, but I'm also not a very harsh critic on acting. I thought the main girl was really good though. And then there's the whole metaphor with the ancient gods=audience & corporation=movie industry thing. |

I usually try to watch a few movies before posting, but I've been watching them kinda slowly so I'll just post now. Blue Velvet -- Pretty cool song. I liked the movie too. It wasn't as weird as I expected, but I expected it to be extremely weird just because I heard Lynch is a weird guy. I guess that's why I heard I should start with this one, though. Less weird. Anyway, I don't really have a lot to say about it. Good story. I liked the symbolism, even if zooming in on an ear was kinda weird. The Wolverine -- Eh. I enjoyed watching it, but even for a superhero movie, it was very predictable. I guess that's all I really have to say about it... Looking forward to X-Men: Days of Future Past. |

Blue Velvet is sort of trippy (guy in the yellow suit's trance, Frank's gas addiction), but it makes sense. Which can't be said for anything else I've seen by him. Although, Mulholland Drive makes sense if someone explains it to you. But you won't get it by yourself. If you do, you are amazingly good at putting pieces together and should become a detective. |
