I haven't posted here in a while and I've seen a few movies, so I'll be brief.

The Grand Budapest Hotel: I liked this movie.

Locke: This movie was all right.

Belle: I liked this movie.

Chef: This movie was pretty good.

The Immigrant: I liked this movie.

Hoping to see Ida, Obvious Child, Edge of Tomorrow, and maybe The Rover soon. I think I might like those movies as well.

Last Saturday I went to a showing of The Room. For those who haven't heard of the reputation of this... work, it's a very poorly written, directed, and acted movie, and the fun in watching it is having everyone yell at the screen about how bad it is, pointing out flaws and whatnot. At first it seemed annoying that people were talking over the movie but I got into the flow of things after a while - it's the kind of movie you don't really want to watch without commentary. I'd definitely recommend it on the condition you watch it with a seasoned viewer - particularly in a group. I think a number of theaters do showings of it at midnight, where I'm sure loyal/repeat viewers watch it and can deliver on the experience. It's a terrible movie but a great experience.

So...the new Transformers movie...so many feels right now. It's like the sequel to the original Transformers movie back in 2007 I always wanted. I can't speak for everyone else, but I can talk about how I felt about this film. We have a completely new human cast which is a very welcome addition. Marky Mark does so much better than Shia ever did as the lead, and Nicola Peltz is a better actress than Megan Fox and Rosie from the third film. She's not great, but she is serviceable. The story picks up 4 years after the last film, and other than the "Battle of Chicago", there is hardly any mention about the last trilogy. The Autobots are in hiding following those events, and we immediately see a new Transformer...and he is working with humans! His name is Lockdown and he affiliates with neither side; in fact Decepticons really don't exist in this movie. This time around, a laboratory agency has taken enough scrap and metal from deceased transformers to make their own. Without adding spoilers, I'll just say that there are some pretty familiar characters that will no doubt make a reappearance later in the next couple movies which are obviously to follow this one.

Cade is the new hero of this film and he becomes involved when he discovers an abandoned truck in a movie theater that is about to be torn down. Surprise surprise, that truck turns out to be a transformer. Since the government is hunting down all remaining transformers, Cade's friend Lucas, and Cade's daughter Tessa urge him to report it for a reward to put her through college. It seems the family is under financial hardship, as the first half hour of the film make priority over foreclosure notices and eviction notices. Again to avoid spoilers, I'll say that Cade is betrayed and a government agency led by Kelsey Grammer's character Harold Attinger called Cemetery Wind close in on Optimus' location. At gun point, Optimus springs in to action and saves Cade and his daughter. This also introduces us to Tessa's boyfriend Shane. Shane really doesn't have a HUGE part in the film, but he's a likable enough guy. Somewhere in the story there are mention of Creators, this "Seed", and terraforming. It is all overly complex, but it really delves into the lore of the transformers for a nice set up in future stories.

The acting is much better than past films and Stanley Tucci's character Joshua leads the pack. He is devious as the leader of the organization that builds transformers. and hilarious in the films final hour. Speaking of comedy, the movie tones it down so it has a more serious approach. A lot of the humor is actually funny and feels more natural than in past installments.

But who really cares about the humans in a film about giant robots? Yes, this movie is bigger and better than all that stood before it. Optimus Prime and Bumblebee return, but new characters Drift and Hound really stand out. Following the first 40 minutes, the transformers get about 70% of screen time which was very welcome! Each one got their character fleshed out and you really cared about each one; something that the last two films had a problem doing.

How about that action? It certainly doesn't disappoint. Following the film's initial (and heart wrenching) opening scene, we aren't introduced to a fight until 45 minutes in. The CGi spectacle is just amazing. I was simply left in awe over the graphical department, and everything looked real (Which we have come to expect from Transformers movies). In particular, the highway scene and the Hong Kong fights were exhilarating. The final fight, the last five minutes of the film, were pure awesome. Also, the ending left you immediately wanting the sequel; it actually leaves a cliffhanger. Many critics are criticizing the film for having too much action, but it makes me wonder if they saw the movie. There is less destruction and action than the last two, it honestly feels more close to the first movie.

Oh, and those Dinobots though....They are amazing, but they are saved for last which I kind of expected. I wish they had more screen time, but hey, Dinobots. My nitpicks are small, such as the film being quite long. I didn't really mind, but there were some scenes that didn't need to be as long as they were. The romance plot between Tessa and Shane was okay, but underdeveloped. The comedy was good, but some of it just wasn't that funny. Overall I give this film a mighty:

FOUR fighting robots out of FIVE

And highly recommend TRANSFORMERS fans check it out; those expecting deep narrative and such need not apply.

Went to the movies tonight. I was having a tough time deciding between Ida and Obvious Child. Decided to see Ida when I was getting my ticket. The trailer made it seem really good and everyone said it was amazing so I was like, sure I'd enjoy that. But I'd be wrong. I really didn't get it. Usually, even if I don't like a movie, I can at least understand why people liked it. I can't say that about Ida. There were, like, two scenes that were enjoyable. Maybe three. Oh cool, there were quirky camera angles and there were some nicely framed shots. Not enough to make it interesting. The weird thing is that it could have been more interesting, but the way they showed it, it took out all of the emotional punch. This is probably my least favorite movie I've seen in theaters since I've lived in Texas, and I saw the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie in theaters.

I was bored so much by Ida that I couldn't just do that. I filled up my gas tank, got a Jamba Juice, and went back to see Obvious Child. Yay, it was good! The first half was actually funny (funny rom-com alert!) to the point that it was annoying, because the old lady behind me wouldn't stop laughing and repeating the punch-lines. The second half took a more serious turn (as you might expect a movie about a woman telling her sort-of-one-night-stand-guy about her impending abortion to do). Obvious Child did a good job of avoiding the cheesy/bad conventions that you find in a lot of rom-coms, again unsurprisingly, since centering your rom-com around abortion is anything but conventional. But yeah, good movie that totally made up for Ida.

I'm looking for some recommendations, preferably some good movies on Netflix. I know that City of God got added today, so I'll most likely watch that tonight. Other than that, I'm pretty much just looking for whatever movie any of you think is good. I'm not a genre stickler either, so suggest anything.

For Netflix movies, I would recommend personally Fargo, Oldboy, Fifth Element, Big Trouble in Little China, Monsters, and Cabin in the Woods. That's really just a tiny portion of some of the really good movies on Netflix, but those were the ones that came to mind.

The latest movies I watched that I liked enough to recommend because I'm too lazy to find a list of my favorite movies still on Netflix:

Short Term 12: Indie drama (99% Tomatometer and Brie Larson is fly)
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly: Foreign drama adapted from an autobiography (Four Oscar nominations)
The Hunt: Foreign drama (Oscar nom + Mads Mikkelsen)
Dogtooth: What the fuck is this even (Oscar nom and is the most bizarre thing you've probably seen in a long time)
Side Effects: Twisty thriller (Steven Soderbergh is supposedly a big deal)
Zodiac: Slowburn mystery (David Fucking Fincher)

I was away last summer when this came out but I really wanted to see it and I am glad that it is on Netflix. Will watch it when I can.

I saw Edge of Tomorrow yesterday. I liked it. It was pretty cool (like Independence Day meets World War II meets Run Lola Run) and it was surprisingly fast-paced for resetting about 1000000 times. My only real complaint about it is the ending.
spoilaz
The final act was kind of not as good as the rest, but other than my issues with the last ~30 minutes, I thought it was a solid summer bust. Speaking of it being a bust, I totally would not have watched it solely based on the trailer. I didn't even look into it until people said it was actually good. So maybe that's why it did poorly. I dunno. Maybe some of you have thoughts about that.

If you want to laugh, I recommend checking out "21 Jump Street". Probably one of my favourite comedies ever.

I'm not a movie buff (more of a series guy), so I can't be bothered to post any other suggestions, lol.

Watched Indie Game: The Movie at long last. Kinda weird watching it now knowing what happened with Phil Fish, but it was definitely worth the watch nonetheless.

All the different Netflix's have different movies. For example, UK Netflix has the Godfather, while we do not. Also, British and Canadian (maybe more, idunno) Netflix get episodes of shows like, the day after premiere. We have to wait forever.
