Yeah guardians was great, it was hilarious, but when it needed to it was sad or heartwarming. Pretty much every other scene with groot was heartwarming. I'll maybe do a review later with spoilers, because honestly there's so many things I just have to talk about, especially the last scene before the credits.

So I did see Guardians today, and it was pretty much what Snow and Cal sad. It pulled of its humor very well but knew when to tone it down for the more serious scenes. I only have one tiny logical problem at one point in the movie:

Spoiler: click to toggle

Other than that, pretty darn good movie, just what I expect/want from a Marvel blockbuster.

Exam -- a neat movie made in 2009. it casts tons of no name actors and I think it was made on a lower budget than the movies that hit theaters. anyways, its like a psychological thriller about a group of people applying for this mysterious job and they are given 80 minutes to complete an exam, with a strict set of rules they have to follow given by the person who administrates it. they then find out that the papers they have contain no question, and the spend the movie trying to figure out the question and then answer it. It makes you think a lot and guess what is gong on throughout the entirety of the movie, and has a nice little twist ending. It's on netflix instant watch and worth checking out if you like movies that give your brain some work

Guardians of the Galaxy looks cheesy as fuck, kind of surprised by the responses to it.

Antichrist - I'm gonna have to let this one stew for a while. Basically Willem Defoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg play a married couple (without names) whose infant son accidentally kills himself at the beginning of the movie. Emotionally damaged, Defoe's character, a psychologist, helps take Gainsbourg's through her post-trauma insanity while at their cabin in the country. Based on reviews I've seen, it's pretty much 50-50 you'll love it or hate it. I'm more toward the middle, mainly because this movie was pretty pretentious. When you have a fox that says "Chaos reigns" and a woman doing extremely questionable things with her reproductive organs it makes it feel like you're pushing some point pretty hard, and I hate it when movies get overly preachy. Defoe's and Gainsbourg's performances are both great, however. I'm feelin' a 3/5.

Short Term 12 - A great, powerful, and overall heartwarming film. It revolves around the staff and residents of a treatment facility for damaged and down-on-their-luck kids. Basically every actor in this movie gives a stellar performance. This film would not nearly have been as good without good acting from the child actors, all of whom do a great job. It's very smartly written, and comes across very genuine. It even takes a little time to expose some flaws in the governmental operation of facilities such as the one in the movie, all without beating the viewer over the head with it. A pretty darn good watch. 4/5.

The cheesiness fits. Most of it is because of Starlord, which without giving too much away, hasn't had the chance to grow up. Drax is kinda cheesy too, but that's explained directly. Tons of cheese, plus great action, and the most heartwarming scenes in a big blockbuster for the first time in forever make the movie really special. It is really nice having a fun movie in theaters again in a time where even the comedic films get a bit too serious.

So yeah, as a filler class this semester I chose a subject called FILM1010, which is supposed to teach me to analyse films and stuff. It has nothing to do with my planned education, but I needed one subject outside of my field, so why not? Plus the exam is two months before the other three, which means I'll only have three subjects to think about for the two last months. Win/win, right?

Any way, we'll be seeing two movies every week over the course of 5 weeks, i.e. 10 movies for this class. Here's the list of movies:

Rear Window (Alfred Hitchcock 1954)
Den Enfaldige Mördaren (Hans Alfredson 1982)
The Conversation (Francis Ford Copola 1974)
Citzen Kane (Orson Weles 1941)
Hana (Joe Wright 201)
Shane (George Stevens 1953)
Casablanca (Michael Curtiz 1942)
Jules et Jim (Francois Trufaut 1962)
Lost Highway (David Lynch 197)
The Shining (Stanley Kubrick 1980)

I guess I should be ashamed that the only film on this list I've seen is "The Shining"?

But yeah, I think stopping by here to give my thoughts on the movies after each class could be a good idea.

I think this could be a pretty cool semester.

So like, I've watched a lot of movies this summer, so here's a nice list for ya.

Annie Hall
The Godfather (parts 1 and 2)
Return of the Dragon
Raging Bull
The Graduate
The Host
Easy Rider
Boyz N the Hood
The Hunt
Blue is the Warmest Colour
Capote
Mud
The Road
The Master
Mad Max
The Fisher King
The Immigrant
Yojimbo
Kagemusha

So yeah, a lot of foreign films and new Hollywood. I think the ones of those I liked the best were Godfather II (I thought it was better than I almost solely because of DeNiro) and Yojimbo. The most overrated was Blue is the Warmest Colour. Also, Capote and the Master made me really miss Philip Seymour Hoffman.

What did you think of Mad Max? I really didn't care for the first one a whole lot. I guess the atmosphere and stuff were cool, and I definitely like it because it led us to the wonderful Borderlands, but idk, I just didn't really get into it. I might rewatch it, but I hear Mad Max: Road Warrior is a lot better, so I'll watch that eventually. Definitely before Fury Road comes out, anyway.
