Room - One of the best movies of the year and Brie Larson should win an Oscar, probably.
A book adaptation that doesn't suck? MIRACLES

I kinda forgot this one was out, oops.

The Evil Dead is the most disgusting thing I've ever seen.

Idk if I'll remember everything, but:

The Evil Dead -- The tree rape was a lot worse than I anticipated and everything was disgusting and everyone was stupid and The Cabin in the Woods took a lot more from this movie than I realized. But I'll still trudge through Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness because Ash vs. Evil Dead sounds like it's pretty good.

The Others -- THE TWIST was pretty cool. Not very scary but it didn't need to be.

The Sixth Sense -- This twist was pretty obvious, so I guess that means it was set up well but the moment it was revealed was anticlimactic because of it. I know someone who mentioned being scared during this movie but I can't think of a scary moment in the movie so that confused me but wutever.

In Bruges -- The people I watched this with thought it was a traditional comedy. Not the slaughterfest black comedy it ended up being. I enjoyed it except for the obnoxious Britishness.

Fight Club -- I knew the twist here but it was still a very good movie. Our campus supposedly had a Fight Club last year but I tried to join this year and they no longer seem to exist.

The X-Files -- Idk why everyone hates the movie. The first one, anyway. Seemed alright to me.

Can't think of anything else I've seen recently. Oh well.

They get less horror-y and more silly and ridiculous and wonderful, so you don't have to worry about too much tree rape. Until you watch the new Evil Dead.

I watched it when I was 8 or 9 and was super freaked out when the old woman opened the wardrobe the kids were hiding in and I stopped watching it. Someone mentioned the twist in casual conversation a while ago and now I want to go back and watch it again.

From Russia With Love -- Better than Dr. No. Now I've seen three Bond movies! The other was Skyfall.

Straight Outta Compton -- I didn't know if I'd like it or not since I'm not into rap at all, but it was really good. And I don't know if it was because I was listening to the music in context or what, but I enjoyed that a lot more than I expected. Also I'm glad I've seen the "bye Felicia" thing now so I can quote it without having not seen it.

Bro, I'm tryna go in order here. I'm sure there are extremely important plot developments in Octopussy that I must see before Casino Royale.

Keep Moving Forward

Just came back from Star Wars. Here's some spoiler-free impressions.

It's good. Way better than the prequels, if you were concerned about that. It plays it safe and mirrors the original trilogy almost to a fault. The returning characters don't feel shoe-horned in for fan-service purposes. Fear not, the torch has been passed and Rey and Finn are the new faces of Star Wars. Both characters were done well, and I was genuinely invested in their development as characters. The action scenes were good, too. They weren't massive piles of CGI like the prequels, but were clean and well-edited.

There's really only two things I was disappointed by. The first was that it felt a bit too derivative of the original trilogy. I can't really get into details on that, but you'll know what I mean when you see it. The second was that Kylo Ren wasn't as great of a villain as I had hoped he'd be. He's very lacking, and doesn't feel nearly as scary as a main villain should. He's almost comical, actually. As it stands now, he's near the very bottom of my list of best Star Wars villains.

The movie was disappointing in certain areas, but overall it was great. I had a lot of fun, and that's really all what I was wanting out of the movie.

Just got out of Star Wars too

first off, it was fantastic. It was EXACTLY what fans were looking for from a star wars film, more or less. if you're a Star Wars fan and you've invested yourself in the movies like major fans have, you will laugh, and you will cry, and you'll leave wanting more.

I agree with Volt entirely that it mirrors the original trilogy and yeah you'll understand when you see it. So much nostalgia that made this film good, and its pretty clear the reigns have been passed to the new characters now. I also agree that Kylo Ren seems like a dopey character at times. He's a character heavily invested in the Force and is absolutely obsessed with Darth Vader, and he attempts to mirror Vader as best he can, but he clearly has a lot to learn about the Force, in his respective character. He is off the chains though, and his character's motive *make sense* and that is the most important aspect of a villain such as him. He wasn't as intimidating a you'd expect at times, but he certainly was sporadic and he gives you that feeling.

Overall, it was very very good, and its clear the new trilogy will be promising. I can't rate it, but I'd say it was probably the third best of the seven.

Agreed on most points with Star Wars. I was a little disappointed by the storyline, because the prequels, for all their faults, at least did their own thing. But, the cinematography was gorgeous, the CG looked really good, and the new characters were fantastic. I was immediately invested in Finn and Rey, and Poe was also really great.

Here's my other more specific thoughts (aka spoilers):

Star Wars-free reviews (until at least later on this week/next week)!

Spotlight
With all the rave reviews, I was kind of surprised at how quietly good this was. It wasn't super flashy or anything, outside of a few scenes (which were very good), but it was always compelling, and often disturbing. Great performances all around. Mark Ruffalo and Stanley Tucci probably gave the most "noticeable" performances, but all the others did well too. My one criticism (if you can call it that) is of Rachel McAdams. I haven't seen her in much (Mean Girls, A Most Wanted Man), but this was probably her most ordinary performance of the three. She was fine, just didn't really stand out. Overall though, fantastic stuff and a solid addition to my top ten movies of the year.

Magnolia
Put off watching this for a while because of how difficult it can be to find three hours to watch a movie, but I was not disappointed. Speaking of great ensemble performances, this one had a great group as well. Some of the major actors from Boogie Nights came back for Paul Thomas Anderson here and might have even elevated their performances. Notably, John C. Reilly. Never saw him as anything but a goofy actor, but he did a great job as an overly sincere and disrespected cop. Sure, some of that was comedic, but he did great in what I thought was not too dissimilar from Philip Seymour Hoffman's role in Boogie Nights while still being completely different. I can't say Julianne Moore elevated her performance since her as Maggie/Amber is one of the best performances I can think of, but she delivered, as always. At first, I had a problem with the ending, which came off as not only unrealistic, but a bit on-the-nose. After looking into it though (and apparently the movie wasn't lying with the "this is something that happens" placed in it), I realized how well it fit the movie. Definitely going to continue watching more Paul Thomas Anderson.

Krampus
Had the decision to see either this for free or Star Wars for regular price. Went for this one. Not disappointed. I think it's officially a horror movie (maybe a horror/comedy), but it's a lot more funny than scary. The entire first 15-20 minutes is like a comedy of manners with the up-tight white middle class snobs of the suburbs having a Christmastime visit from the even whiter trash from Hicksville, USA. The comedy isn't as prominently featured once it gets to its horror element (though a lot of of the horror stuff is somewhat to pretty funny), but the story flows well enough that it can counteract that loss. I though the ending was pretty cut-and-dry, but it turns out there's quite a bit of debate as to what happened with plenty of defensible arguments. So that's interesting. Forgetting that they're usually trash, this was one of the best Christmas movies I've seen in a long time.

Evil Dead II -- This was much more fun than the first one.

Army of Darkness -- Same. Except now I really want to watch the TV show.

What We Do in the Shadows -- Quite funny. Also: "Werewolves, not swearwolves."

Goldfinger -- I'm noticing a trend where the early Bond movies are actually pretty good. I expected much more cheesiness.

Thunderball -- Same.
