Agreed with Sterling, and this is much like something I'd have said to Chris Kluwe himself, if it would not have taken me a trillion tweets to do so. As it was, I had to cut from three tweets to one because I didn't want to deal with the hassle of tweeting three times. >.>

This isn't to say I don't enjoy a great-looking game, but graphics are a huge reason that the Final Fantasies and Uncharteds of the world are, well, less than they could and should be in every other area. They're still enjoyable, but... What could be if gamers and the industry weren't so focused on making everything as shiny as it can be?

But who doesn't love horse armor. But seriously, who actually uses a horse? Werewolf mode is much faster (and cooler).

Basically this guy is saying that most games are not serving up enough intellectual stimulation for his tastes, and that most common games are catering to the LOCODE (lowest common denominator) class of gamers. At least thats what I got from the article.

While I personally see where he is coming from, and enjoy many of these "dumb" games as he puts them, I do think that there is room for growth in the more intellectually stimulating variety of games. The video game industry has made billions of dollars over the years of of these "dumb" games, that I think they can afford to take a little risk on newer, more challenging IP's!!

The question is, will they??

This argument is getting old. "Games need to grow up." They need to grow up. What one gamer might consider an "intelligent" game vastly differs from what another gamer might view as "brilliant." It's all relative. Many people thought Inception was amazing. I found it to be redundant.

I especially love the fact that there is not one example given as to how games can "grow up." They have, and will continue to evolve. Video games ARE on par with other media, but these guys just can't see it. How many books are released each year? How many are intellectually stimulating? Same with movies. See my point?

Stop being an ass and enjoy the games, goddammit.

@Cal, I don't think he meant more challenging=more intelligent. There is a plethora of challenging games out there. Take the game I'm playing, Trials: Evo, for example. Unless you meant more like "challenging the way we view games" challenging.

When he says "intelligent", he means in terms of narrative and characterization, not gameplay. That was the impression I got both from his Kotaku piece and his original piece. To be perfectly honest, I see where he's coming from, even if I disagreed with his piece in The Atlantic.

Yes, there are plenty of games that are intelligent in terms of gameplay, level design, and all that good stuff. We could sit here listing off intelligent games in that area forever, but when are list wars ever a productive exercise?

A non-gamer might argue they have nothing on chess, but the thing about chess is that it's had hundreds of years to "mature" and has had some of the world's most intelligent people pushing the strategy of that game forward. I don't think we'll ever see any single video game last that long, even the Starcrafts of the world. This is an era where money is king, after all, and if your product stops making money, it will stop being supported.

Games tend to have very few stories, too. Many of them boil down to "save teh wurldz" or whatever area you're playing the game in. Naturally, you cannot lose, and if you DO, you simply get a "game over" screen. Perhaps some games show the world ending or some shit after you die, but that's a rarity and it never really feels like a punishment when you can simply retry. They are essentially male power fantasies. Even the stupidest of the stupid (and trust me, they are as stupid as the vidya, if not more so) in other forms of entertainment show more variety on a weekly basis.

Modern Warfare 2 ending with the death of your character would have been a major wham moment for the series and the medium as a whole, if only due to the series' popularity, but it would have came with the same controversy that Mass Effect 3's ending did. (Which naturally stems from the idea that many players felt they did not "win", or as they might say, "got closure".)

I don't have anything against this idea; I enjoy a good "save the world" story, as I'm sure most gamers do. When all is said and done, I'll count two save the world stories (Xenoblade Chronicles, FFXIII-2) as two of my favorite games of this year. However, I want to see more diverse stories. The ideas that "games are fun" and "the player should always win" are holding back storytelling possibilities in the medium.

Where are the romances? Where are the political intrigues, like, say, Game of Thrones? Where are other extremely character-driven stories, the Mad Mens and Tremes of video games? Where are the games that have you investigating something, trying to figure out what truly happened? Where are... Yeah, you get the idea.

You might say these things exist in some games. Actually, I know you will. But I'd challenge you to find more than a handful of known, non-visual novel titles that make premises like these the focus of the story. If they are there, they are generally secondary to saving the world or some shit. I'm not saying these games don't exist; I'm saying that while they exist, they are an exception and they haven't done well enough to have much of an impact on what gets released.

I think many of the problems plaguing this medium can be directly traced to the never-ending graphics wars and the toxic influence of big publishers/money. This is most certainly one of those problems. One only needs to look at the mainstream of other forms of entertainment to see why it is. When mainstream publishers are trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator, i.e. the average idiot, products with the maturity and intelligence of the average idiot are all you will get from them.

I'll leave you with this question: How many games can you think of, that in fifty or a hundred years, will be considered storytelling masterpieces?

I can't answer this question with *any*. Even a game like Catherine, which I love for being mature and different (insofar as games go), has a story that is told better in other mediums.

If you want an intelligent game, play Journey. dayuuuum.

It's not like games have lost intelligence or anything. I mean, the NES to N64 era was pretty straight forward, with the PS2 having some intelligent games as he puts them.

Persona 4: The Golden might be coming to PS3 and 360 (with Kinect support) if the list of trademarks at the bottom of the official website are to be believed.

I just found this in the Upcoming Releases section on my gamefly app. Due out on 6/5/12 for PC.

Posted Image

I need my computer ASAP.

EDIT: wait a second, is that picture of one that's already out? I'm seeing two different ones, one titled like the picture above, and one that says Katy Perrys Sweet Treats.

EDIT 2: yep, Showtime is one that's already out. That one seems to be more of a performance thing. Sweet Treats is almost like living in the California Girls video where roofs look like cakes, marshmallow shaped trees, and a banana split sundae style of a couch. And of course Katy Perry is an ingame character. I'll edit the picture to match.

Maybe now I can finally live my dream of being able to bang Katy Perry :D

Elincia looks *okay*, if not a little fanservice-y. Whatever.

But what the FUCK did they do to Micaiah?

Also needs moar Mia, even if the chances of getting her are near zero because she's not a Lord. Perhaps that's a good thing after seeing that... thing... masquerading as Micaiah.
