TES: V Skyrim: Dawnstar trailer!

With the new DLC we'll be getting horseback combat, crossbows and just a crapload of swag.

Along with what looks like some sort of horrific demonic transformation.

Got to be the sweetest edition of a game ever
http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive...-re-titles.aspx

So getting it. I have the 1st one, and already beat the 4th, got fed up with the 5th, but I still haven't played 2 and 3, have been dying to replay 4, and maybe, just maybe, one day I will beat 5.

Reggie

"We don't have a policy surrounding used games," Fils-Aime said. "We have not put in place any technology to go after the used game business."

Smart move. Nintendo makes a profit on each console, their titles are games we have to have on day one, etc.

Also hoping for something more definitive on how powerful the Wii U is. The end note said they discussed that with Reggie but will post that in the coming days. All we have so far is either ambiguous or techie speak. Not helpful.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2012...-gen-says-jaffe

I don't think so, Tim.

I'll concede that PC is looking like the better platform with each day that passes by. I can walk out, buy a $3-400 PC, upgrade the graphics card from that lolintegrated shit, and voila! I now have a reasonable gaming PC. Sure, it might have issues with something like Crysis 2 with that HD texture pack or Metro 2033 or some shit on really high settings, but for the most part I'll be able to play today's PC games on that device.

Combine that with the more fierce competition in the PC gaming marketplace and over time, you'll save money as a gamer. I know, the high entry cost is off-putting, but it's not as high as it once was. (Our first PC was ~$2,300, and nowadays the specs of some piece of shit I can find for $50 on craigslist put that machine to shame.)

There are reasons I'm looking into buying/building a PC instead of jumping straight into generation eight.

That said, consoles have two major strengths over PC.

One is that they are generally a more convenient platform for the average person. The casual gamer does not want to worry that his/her device's specs aren't up to par, sit around and wait for a huge file to finish downloading, make sure drivers and all that are up to date, and so on. They just want to have the assurance that the game they bought will run and that they won't have to wait forever to play the damn game.

On the topic of "going full digital", whether that is via streaming or downloading, I don't think it'll happen any time soon, barring major improvements in the US's internet infrastructure. There are still way too many areas that have shitty internet, and it's not smart business to essentially say, "lol you don't get to be a gamer because you live in an area with bad internet".

Two is that they are a more social platform. Online multiplayer is working really hard at nullifying this console advantage in the name of the Almighty Dollar, but as the success of the Wii has shown, there's a huge market for a console with games you can play with your friends. They don't have to be graphically intense, have deep gameplay mechanics, memorable soundtracks, or any of that jazz. They just have to be *fun games*. I'm not going to play Wii Sports or Mario Party all the time, but when someone else wants to play a game with me/someone else, those are the first games I'm plugging into my Wii. Why? They're simple enough for newcomers to play and enjoy.

The mobile platform is arguably more convenient than consoles, with the small downloads and the portability of smartphones in general, but the experience is different. I'm not getting the same type of experience from Angry Birds as I am from Final Fantasy XIII or the local/online components of Rock Band. This isn't necessarily a *bad* thing, but as long as there is a market for epic experiences or truly "social gaming" (which I think of as local multiplayer), there will be a console market.

tl;dr: Consoles aren't disappearing in ten years. I do suspect they will change in ways beyond "adding beefier technology", but who knows how that will happen.

Completely agree 100%. Yes, PC gaming is looking better than it was years ago, but for me I love the convenience of console gaming. Im not an overly technical minded person, so having to upgrade my video cards, drivers etc every couple of months might be more frustrating than anything for me. Plus, you put a controller in my hand and im good, you put a mouse and keyboard infront of me for a game, and im lost! (inb4youcangetacontroller4yourPC, yes you can, but then you have to set all the buttons up for each game if im not mistaken, correct me if im wrong. And a reminder, im not a very technical minded person.)

100. Pong
Lost all credibility right away. It may not be a technically great game, but to deny its impact and put it at 100, as if it *had* to be there, makes this list bullshit. How much worse can it get...?

99. Words With Friends
Not gonna lie and say I hate the game, but it's a fun time waster and little more. If one of our hobby's best games is really a ripoff of Scrabble, we have a shit hobby.

98. Pitfall
I got nothing here, except to say I wasn't impressed when I tried this long ago.

97. NBA 2K11
The only NBA game I've ever played that's worth a damn is Jam. Then again, I haven't played any others.

96. Guitar Hero II
Sure is blind Harmonix love in here. I get that hating on Acti is cool and all now, but let's not pretend that the major factors that determine a favorite GH game aren't "your first game", "Harmonix or Activision", and "favorite setlist". (My favorite GH should be obvious since I'm a vocalist.)

95. Burger Time
What the fuck is this shi-

Oh, looks like a Donkey Kong ripoff. Next.

94. Braid
Can I just hate on Blow's pretentiousness and call it a day?

93. Star Wars: TIE Fighter
Didn't play, etc.

92. Galaga
I see how this is going to work: Many of the supposed "must include" games are going to be low on the list. Whatever.

91. The Sims
Not a huge fan of the game (I prefer SimCity's macro-management to The Sims' micro-management), though I'd think it deserves a higher spot than 91, even if it *is* by and large casual.

90. Baldur's Gate II
Never played it, lolbioware, etc, but really? One of the best RPGs of all time is relegated to *90*? Do I want to see which RPGs they ranked higher?

89. Left 4 Dead
Zombies? Fuck that. Next.

88. Double Dribble
*Another* basketball game? No other sport is going to get more than one title on this list, and I haven't yet seen Jam. What the hell?

87. Mass Effect 2
So in effect we're saying that the least-positively received installment of Mass Effect (and thus presumably the whole series) is superior to BG2. Nice work? I wouldn't have an issue with one or even two games in the series on the list, but all three?

Also the WRPG bias is showing already. We get it, (non-Nintendo) Japan puts out teh shitty gaems.

86. Out Run
To be fair, I know nothing, but it looks really good for the 80s from my five seconds in Google.

85. Silent Hill 2
I don't have a reaction one way or the other. Perhaps LAD or someone into this type of game would.

84. Wii Sports
Again, kind of has to be here, but like with The Sims, you can't discount what it did for casual gaming.

83. Ninja Gaiden
Idk which one to assume and I'm really too lazy to care. Odds are I wouldn't like any of them anyway and dismiss them as having "faek difficulty".

82. Super Smash Bros. Melee
Best SSB game and it's at 82? I wonder where Brawl is going to be, because it doesn't take a scientist to guess they'll rank that higher.

81. Resident Evil
See Silent Hill 2, pretty much. I get that this series has to be here somewhere; I just don't care.

80. Gears of War 3
BROWN BROWN BROWN

79. Psychonauts
I actually own this, but haven't finished it. I guess I can understand it making the list from all the internets love it gets, but that never translates to anything offline.

78. Spy Hunter
That's game #4 I've had to Wiki. I'm not a student of 70s/80s video gaming history. Whatever. I don't care one way or the other for what little I read.

77. Excitebike
Actually a pretty cool little game. I think the thing I liked most as a very young child was making my own tracks and shit. Were there many games from that time with a similar feature?

76. Blades of Steel
Only hockey game I played was NHL '93 or '94 or something along those lines. Whatever.

75. Fallout 3
*Brown Oblivion With Guns

You knew that joke was coming. More seriously, I do intend to get the game at some point, mostly because the price:content ratio is great. Still, not sure that Oblivion/FO3 are list-worthy (though I know Oblivion is here somewhere, sigh).

74. Starfox 64
I agree with Lightning's assessment that Starfox is Nintendo's most meh IP. I don't have much more to say than that.

73. Mega Man II
Hopefully this is the only Mega Man game here. I got the vibe of "Memorization: The Game" from 9 and don't care enough to confirm if they're all like that.

72. Mortal Kombat
I had fun with it in my youth, but let's be real: The original is remembered mostly for the gore on the Sega Genesis version.

71. Wing Commander II
Never played it, but looks like an early Descent from the screenies I see on Google, which is always cool.

70. Star Wars
That's horribly vague and I don't care enough to check.

69. Double Dragon
Another franchise I had fun with when I was way younger. I suppose it belongs here and all, but wouldn't make my personal T100.

68. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
So this list shows some grasp of video game history and throws it away for a meh tier PoP game instead of the original. Herp derp.

67. Minecraft
I suppose it belongs, if only for being one of the biggest indie successes in the industry. Still, it's a glorified Lego set. I love me some Legos like everyone else ever, but the game makes the concept way more tedious. I'm not creative enough for the game either, but that's on me.

66. Assassin's Creed II
Not really surprised the series is here. I still have to play through this series, but I'm currently enjoying the original. *shrug*

65. Unreal Tournament
Yeah, pretty obviously belongs. Still, I'd think 65 is low for one of the pioneers of online gaming.

64. NBA Jam
HE'S ON FIRE!

Hopefully they mean the original game and not that new... thing.

63. Wolfenstein 3D
Has to be here, but the predecessor to Doom, arguably *the* FPS game, at 63? What is this?

62. Civilization II
I'll be quite disappointed if IV does not make the list later. Then again, perhaps II is a lot deeper, who really knows. Still, I'm quite content with IV (and V when I get a gaming PC). >.>

61. God of War III
How about no? I suppose I fully expected to see this game, but if pressed to make a short list of games that show the worst this industry has to offer, GoW3 would be on it.

60. Contra
up up down down left right left right b a lololol am i a gaemer yet

More seriously, I suppose I fully expected this game too. I don't care one way or the other.

59. Maniac Mansion II: Day of the Tentacle
Perhaps I'm just not old enough to get this game's inclusion.

58. Ultima Online
Not surprised to see Ultima here at all, but the online version strikes me as an interesting choice, given that the series came of age waaaaaaaay before online play even got off the ground.

57. Pokemon Red/Blue
1) Shin Megami Tensei beat Pokemon by seven years. Naturally, it won't sniff the list unless Persona 3/4 somehow sneak in.
2) Holy nostalgia. The originals are *objectively* the worst games. I'm not even trolling.

56. Super Street Fighter IV
A popular tourneyfag game making the list? I'm shocked, I tell you!

55. Kingdom Hearts
I'd just like to point out that this is what I would consider the first JRPG on the list. (I consider Pokemon more adventure than JRPG.) This is distressing, though I suppose some of the genre's heavy hitters will be coming in the top half of the list.

Also, this game isn't list-worthy.

54. Gauntlet
Suppose it had to show up, but as with most games of that era, never played it.

53. Deus Ex
Did I mention this list lost its credibility yet? This should have been a T10 game, if not T5. It regularly makes the top tens of these lists FOR A FUCKING REASON.

I haven't finished the game, mostly because of my apathy when it comes to fixing the audio bug or whatever it is. Still, what I have played, I have enjoyed.

52. Rock Band 3
So we had Harmonix love earlier and are now choosing the sterile RB3 (with a worse setlist, too!) to the more imaginative and fun RB2. Nice work.

51. Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando
Okay? I don't know this series and I don't care. But putting this above Deus Fucking Ex is a crime.

50. Sonic the Hedgehog
I'm... half... there.

That said, Sonic has to make the list. 50 seems low though. I've tried older Sonic and I enjoyed it well enough for what it was, but it's not something I'm rushing to obtain either.

49. Angry Birds
I suppose it deserves a spot, painful as this is to say, but above Deus Ex? Goddamnit no.

48. Tecmo Bowl
If this is the only football game, they are effectively saying this is superior to every Madden game, NFL 2K5 (a game regularly considered the best American football game there is), NFL Blitz, and any other game I forgot/neglected. Which would be bullshit.

47. Myst
I'm pretty sure the list I'm copying from meant Myst, so I'll go with that. I remember this was a *huge* deal when I was young, but not really having a PC/knowing about PC gaming, never got around to it.

46. Red Dead Redemption
Definitely need to get this game. If it's everything I've heard it is, this is *low*.

45. Metal Gear Solid
Oh, more ambiguity that I don't care to clear up. Nice to know.

44. Grand Theft Auto IV
Never got the appeal of this series beyond "LOL I CAN KILLZ EVRY1".

43. Quake III: Arena
Not shocked, got nothing 'cause lololdpcgames, etc.

42. Ghosts N' Goblins
Honestly the only thing I remember is that I saw kids playing this on one of those old Nick game shows. Other than that, idc.

41. Super Mario 64
This would be my choice for best Mario platformer. 41 seems really low for it though.

40. Space Invaders
Another historical game that kind of has to be here.

39. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
I suppose this was fun for a few hours, but these games grew old to me quite fast. :/

38. Super Metroid
I never beat this because there was a point at which I didn't know where to go and I didn't really want to use a guide. Should carve out some time and try this again or something. Anyway, not surprised it's here.

37. Halo
Moar liek Gaylo, amirite?

Jokes aside, we knew at least Halo 3 had to make the list. I suppose the game that made the 360 a viable endeavor deserves a spot too, as much as I'd rather not admit this.

36. Batman: Arkham City
The game sounds good to me and all, but I think you guys can guess what has made me avoid playing it.

35. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
This game/series gets a lot of love, so I see why it's here. Still, this whole Metroidvania thing isn't something that really appeals to me.

34. Counterstrike
One of the most popular e-sports ever made the list. #shocker

33. Final Fantasy VII
This is a game that generally gets T10 honors, if not T3-5. I'm surprised they put a game that is undoubtedly overrated (oh come on, NOTHING can live up to FF7/NGE/Radiohead levels of praise) so low on the list.

I just hope that it isn't their highest-rated JRPG. If it is, they left out a good number of deserving titles in favor of shitty games.

32. Mike Tyson's Punch Out
lol i get it its here cuz it r teh hard

Let's be real, this is the only reason this game is remembered.

31. Skyrim
Only 31? Only? This is easily the best Elder Scrolls title and one of the best games I've ever played.

I'd rage harder, but that whole credibility thing was shot a game in.

30. Super Street Fighter II Turbo
Played the original, but was never impressed with it/fighters in general. I suppose it deserves a spot, but 30? Over at least twenty more deserving games? Get real.

29. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
I enjoyed this and it's definitely great, but not for anything that has to do with gameplay. I think Bioware has sucked at gameplay for around twenty years. It's more so the story, characters, aesthetics, etc.

28. Super Mario Kart
This over 64 is a fucking travesty. Get the fuck out.

27. Chrono Trigger
This over FFVII is indeed a ballsy move. Idk if I'll approve of it, seeing as I have not played FFVII yet, but I do think this might actually be an appropriate spot.

26. Ico
lololol its lyk teh artistic n 2deep4u

Generally all I get out of any case put forth for this game's greatness. I know more about its supposed artisticness than how it plays, which is kind of sad.

25. Grand Theft Auto III
And again I don't get why people like this series. Yeah, it kind of has to make the list, but I don't see how two games in it are so great.

24. Madden 2005
I can hear it now: WHERE IS TEH NFL2K5? THAT WAS A SUPERIOR GAME

Idk, I don't see how you can put 2005 or any Madden from that era over, say, 2011. The Wii version of 2011 was the easiest version of Madden to pick up and play that I've ever tried, and it wasn't a cheating bastard like some (hello, '12).

Still, I don't see how any sports game makes the top 25 unless it's a near-perfect simulation of its sport and highly fun. It's a tacit admission the medium sucks so hard we need other games to make great games.

23. Halo 3
In a shocker, this was not a T5 game.

22. Panzer Dragoon Saga
I get the distinct feeling that whoever made this list presented this game with the line, "I'd tell you what my favorite JRPG is, but you've probably never heard of it."

You have to be fucking shitting me. This might be a great game, but over Chrono Trigger? Really? There's being different and then there's being hipster.

21. Resident Evil 4
This is me attempting to care and failing. I suppose credit can be given for avoiding 5, which from what I understand is more action than survival horror.

20. Call of Duty 4
Going with the one Call of Duty that most people can accept is good instead of Black Ops or Modern Warfare 3? I'm shocked! I'd hope they don't blow this credibility, but... Well...

19. Diablo 2
I accidentally typed "Diablow" for once. I get that it has to be here, but my feelings on games that amount to "grind grind grind" shouldn't be a secret.

18. Ms. Pac-Man
I'm reaching a point where I want to phone it in. Really, from about twenty on every game belongs; it's just a matter of where.

17. StarCraft
Must construct additional pylons, etc. I'm pretty shocked this isn't T10, actually. One of the most played games ever, etc.

16. Half-Life
I think that G4 loves Valve, like everyone else on the planet. There's good reason for this (mine is more "Steam" than any game), but I'm not sure I get the love for their games. Even Portal, to me, was more experience than game.

15. Donkey Kong
You mean this game wasn't already included when they said "Burger Time"?

14. Uncharted 2
Okay, so perhaps I lied about every game belonging. I enjoyed the first Uncharted, the games are really pretty and all that jazz, but this series is essentially Indiana Jones: The Game. If we're rewarding a translation of a movie series to games with tons of adoration, well, our industry has issues and so do we.

13. Portal
Speaking of Portal...

12. Doom II
I guess they could have squeezed in this and the original Doom, but if the choice had to be made, I'd likely go with the original over the polished one.

11. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
I'd be shocked, except I know they went full contrarian and put ALttP at #2.

10. World of Warcraft
Yeah, it's important, but if you ask me, it's important for all the wrong reasons. Treating your customers like walking ATMs wins no points with me.

9. Shadow of the Colossus
Oh look, another "zomg so artsy" game.

I intend to try both this and Ico (I wouldn't be surprised to like them.), but I'd like to hear what makes them great games to *play*, not *experience*. There is a fucking difference.

8. Goldeneye
It's not Perfect Dark, so it's wrong. That said, it is probably the more important game; Perfect Dark just polished a lot of what Goldeneye did.

7. Super Mario Bros. 3
I'd say it's my favorite Super Mario Bros game. Still, we all know the original is going to top or be near the top of any such list that matters.

6. The Legend of Zelda
Gets points for being the first I guess, but there's a difference between "balls hard" and "WHY THE FUCK AM I CALLING A 900 NUMBER FOR THE THIRD TIME TONIGHT". Yes, there was a time people had to do this.

5. Tetris
I'm perfectly okay with this.

4. Asteroids
Of all the old games on this list, I'd probably say this one is my favorite. Not as deep as any of the others or anything, but it certainly feels more fun.

3. Bioshock
Anything influenced by Ayn Rand, even as a scathing critique, is not worthy of this list. Then again, I hate the philosophy of "people are not selfish enough" that much, so take it as you will.

2. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
An interesting Zelda choice, but it wouldn't be mine. That would be Majora's Mask. You know, the most "different" Zelda game there is.

1. Super Mario Bros
Is anyone shocked? Really?

Man, that list brought back memories. I remember playing the shit out of games like Gauntlet and Contra. I also remember The Legend of Zelda pissing me the fuck off because I could never beat it. It's probably a good thing I didn't know about the 900 numbers because I'd have amassed quite a bill.

EDIT:

Also, the original NBA Jam was seriously one of the most fun games to play ever. I can't count how many hours I spent with that.

Should have been called the Top 100 Games We Can Name Off the Top of Our Heads.

I'd actually love to see someone try to argue that the greatest survival horror game ever is not as good as a game that proved to us that people who own iPhones are annoying as shit.

Anyways, fuck this list.

Looking through most of that list, it looked like they were just picking one representative from each series. I assumed they were doing that to avoid having Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy, and however many long series taking up 70% of the list. But then they didn't. That list was pretty damn bad. Just looking through the list real quick, I think the placement for Super Mario 64 is the worst.
