I'm personally really against putting lists which mean a lot to the industry on the list, but w/e. That said, I'm also against adding the first one cuz "OMG NOSTALGIA".

The original Sonic the Hedgehog game was rather bad.

The next two were absolute classics.

My reaction to the list in general (as opposed to each game) is that it's pretty bad. Sure, it had a lot of great games, but Pong at 100? Baldur's Gate 2 at 90? Deus Ex at 53? Final Fantasy VII at 33? All of these, and many other games, were too low.

On the flipside, we had some extremely overrated games. Bioshock at 3, Uncharted 2 at 14, and Kingdom Hearts making the list at all come to mind, but I'm sure there are many more games that are too high.

There were also some games in series that I felt don't belong on the list. Mass Effect 2 was horribly received. I'd have no issues with either 1 or 3, but 2? Civilization II and no Civ IV just strikes me as weird. Super Mario Kart was not better than 64, I don't care what reason they have. And we could argue all day over which GH/RB *really* deserves it (as far as these lists go, I see all those games as interchangeable).

Panzer Dragoon Saga is not the best JRPG ever, either. I'd LOVE to watch someone argue that was better than Earthbound, Mother 3, many FF titles, Lufia II, Pokemon, Secret of Mana, Xenoblade Chronicles, etc, etc. Yet every single title I mentioned did not make the list, which leaves out some heavy hitters in arguably the 90s' most influential gaming genre. Bullshit. And in favor of what? More modern games that are advertised more heavily? I don't expect the list to be dominated by the genre, as my own personal favorite list would be, but four games is too few.

Anyway, moving on.

http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/a...-rights/258479/

This would have sounded ridiculous to me a few years ago. What do we need a "Bill of Rights" for? I'm still getting good games, who gives a fuck amirite?

And then I look at the shape of the modern gaming industry. We do not own the game. Online passes and always online DRM exist, supposedly to encourage buying new and discourage piracy, but in reality are about control. Certain things are held back because we did not buy brand new, and it's rumored that two of the next gen consoles will do something about used games, something none of us will like. Somewhat related, every retailer now has its own "exclusive" pre-order bonus so it can feel like a unique little snowflake. DLC is everywhere, and a good amount of it does not add a lot to the game, if it adds anything (beyond cosmetics) at all. Map packs go for fifteen dollars, when that shit used to be free.

I know what we used to have; I come from the old school. I am very much against giving that up in the name of convenience or a supposedly improved experience or preventing piracy or whatever else. Their explanations are disingenuous at best and outright lies at worst.

And yet we keep buying and spending more and more money on an industry that hates us. We won't protect ourselves from ourselves. Someone has to. Now. It won't be "just a video games thing" in twenty or even ten years. It will affect everyone because everything is going digital right before our very eyes, and those guys will have past precedent that essentially says "lol you have no rights in this new digital marketplace".

Metal Gear Solid 5 is confirmed. Really, REALLY not sure how I feel about this. MGS4 ended the series very well, tying up loose ends and all that jazz. Still, be interesting to see how Hideo gets around the ending.

So Nintendo had one of their Nintendo Direct presentations last night, and here's a recap.

For those too lazy to click the link:
- Nintendo 3DS XL revealed and will release alongside NSMB2 in NA (August 19th) at $200
- New Super Mario Bros. 2 will have DLC levels (and they assured us they're being developed after the game is completed)
- Fire Emblem: Awakening isn't coming to NA until 2013 and will also have its DLC
- July begins "8-Bit Summer" where Nintendo is planning to release a bunch of Virtual Console games for the 3DS
- Kingdom Hearts 3D Demo is available now
- Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask has been confirmed for NA
- The new Super Smash Bros. is being co-developed by Namco Bandai
- New English trailer for Pokemon Black/White 2

http://kotaku.com/5920568/an-open-letter-t...f-final-fantasy

Not news, per se, but I'm sick of all the people who claim Final Fantasy needs to be "fixed".

I don't think the stories/characters are getting worse; I just think fans are no longer twelve years old and thus no longer impressed by the same types of stories/characters they loved in their childhoods. You know what? This is exactly as it should be. Not to say people should stop loving what they did as a child or anything, but wanting something more out of their stories/characters and coming to recognize that there are flaws even in their sacred cows is *normal*.

I missed out on what made games like FFIV and FFVI so damned special in the eyes of many gamers if only because I didn't play them in my youth, but I can look at them more objectively and say, "they aren't all that". There are superior RPGs from the SNES era, not even nostalgia.

I don't think the gameplay is getting any easier. FFXIII was a *harder* game than many of the more recent titles. I probably died >100 times during the course of my first playthrough. XIII-2 has some ridiculous super bosses (that you unfortunately have to pay for, but they are worth it) and every Caius fight is harder than the average boss fight in this series. This idea that giving you control of one character and letting the others do their own thing is "making the game easier" is just wrong. While they do choose efficient actions in XII and XIII, if your setup is shit, you'll lose.

The music wasn't mentioned, but one of the major gripes people have is with music post-Uematsu. I'd like to see more games with music like XIII, less like XIII-2 (though that too had some great pieces). Uematsu isn't coming back anytime soon, if ever, and I think the fanboys need to deal with it.

Also, I could go for a new Mana, on the condition that Hiroki Kikuta is composer. Otherwise I don't care.

http://kotaku.com/5921122/simcity-social-i...-is-very-social

So, SimCity is now ripping off CityVille, which itself was a ripoff of SimCity. Everything has come full circle.

(I know, FarmVille was Zynga's first game in this vein and the one all the others are based on. But still.)

I suppose I shouldn't be shocked. This industry doesn't look at the landscape and think, "how can we differentiate ourselves"; they look at it and wonder, "how can we imitate the current moneymakers". I know all the reasons why and such, but it's still depressing.

I just expected something more of the original city building franchise.

http://kotaku.com/5920931/the-wii-us-power-problem

This won't come as a surprise either. I'm starting to think a reason Nintendo is being coy where the specs are concerned is that they know the system is only a little more powerful than 360/PS3. They have to know that isn't going to please core gamers, who always want MOAR POWER.

It'll definitely please casual gamers/parents though, because one of the first things they look at is the price tag. Less powerful tech = cheaper.

Casuals have always swung the console wars, and they've generally swung them in the direction of the cheapest system. They just want to play games and have fun, not worry about whether or not Wii U can handle tessellation and all that other advanced graphical shit.

Nintendo knows their audience and how to make games for that audience. Some third parties are also pretty good at this. I'm not worried that the Wii U won't succeed. I am worried that if I purchase a Wii U, I'll have to upgrade to a competitor's console in ~2014 anyway, or just go full PC, to keep up with current gaming. Either is an admission that my investment in the Wii U was wasted.

Earthbound/Mother 2 can't get released on the Virtual Console due to legal issues. Shocking, I know, but the supposed specifics have sprung up recently. Here's the three reasons:

  1. The Sky Runner song needs to be changed.
  2. The Chuck Berry battle song needs to be changed.
  3. The Dali’s Clock enemy name needs to be changed.
Nintendo doesn't want to make these changes, so we'll never see Earthbound again.

I think I could live with a couple song changes and a name change of a very insignificant enemy that I generally avoid because I'M NOT AT FULL STRENGTH AT THAT POINT IN THE GAME. (In one of the game's more confusing places at that, so yeah, I am trying to get out of there ASAP instead of fighting extra shit.)

Then again, Nintendo haet Mother, Nintendo haet money.

In keeping with the American History motif, Ubisoft has released a 4th of July trailer for Assassin's Creed 3 (albeit early).

http://kotaku.com/5923280/european-court-s...r-digital-games

As you can probably guess, I wholeheartedly agree with this. I don't see any reason why the digital marketplace should be radically different than a physical marketplace.

I don't mind being "stuck" with $2 CDs from Amazon or $5 games from Steam. At those prices, who cares? Well, that and Amazon/Steam are superior services than what EA and the consoles offer, in large part because they have actual competition. I do mind buying a full-priced digital game on day one and being stuck with it for all eternity, even if it turns out the game sucks ass. That's bullshit.
