To add more credibility to the rumor, GameStop is closing down some of their stores. Could be related or not, I don't know. Should Microsoft actually go through with this, then I am not getting the Xbox 720. I got a 360 over a PS3 because I found its exclusives (Halo) much more entertaining than any of PS3's. My love of Halo, however, is not strong enough so that I would put up with this nonsense. I'm already getting a Wii U when I can, but if the 720 does this and the PS4 doesn't, then I might just switch over to Sony's side. Although, the PS4 also has rumors of its own, so we'll just see. |

Hopefully video game stores wont see the same fate as record stores already have. =[ It's likely related as digital downloads are just getting more and more popular, plus it's way cheaper for developers as Gil more or less mentioned. |

RIP record stores. That said, I'm kind of surprised to have two in a town of 50k. Only one is worth shopping at because it has a scheme that enables me to find product easily, but still. ANYWAY. As for the GameStop thing, yeah, who knows. Could just be low sales, could be GameStop knowing what's coming down the pipe, or it could even be both. There really isn't enough information to tell. I don't shop there very often (I tend to do so when I have no choice), but it's hard to root for people who might very well need those jobs to lose them, even if it would help the local guys down the road. It might be cheaper for everyone involved to store games on PSN/XBL servers as opposed to printing millions of discs, but the problem with that is those stores rarely pass their savings down to us on modern games. You'll still see games from this generation at $40+, or even still at $60. I mean, Game of Thrones is back at $50 again on PSN, and I'm pretty sure that game didn't do well enough to justify it still being there. I'm also pretty sure I've seen it for less in Wally World and such. Why should I download their product when I'm often able to find even a new copy (let alone a used copy!) for less than what these chucklefucks charge? |

I try to support the local stores, but when online stores offer me the same product for almost half the price...it really isn't a question. We have two record stores in this town (Norway's third largest town) of ~200k. One is tiny, epic, underground as fuck and doesn't even have a credit card machine. The other is a store of Norway's probably largest music chain. I completely agree, the prices on PSN/XBL are pretty ridiculous. $50 for a digital copy? noty, I'll rather get it for the same price and have a physical copy, especially considering that you can only use the product on two different consoles using the same user (talking about PSN now, no idea how XBL works). >_> You'd think the digital copy would be a lot more reasonable than a hardcopy. I guess Steam steamrolls them all. c wut i did thar |

http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/07/ouya-annual/ Posted Image Not perfect text, but the sentiment works. Also works for the Xbox news. The reason yearly phones work is because the cell phone (more specifically, the smartphone) is pretty much a necessity in this society. Thus, there are always new customers and customers who want/need to upgrade to a more modern device. Even so, most people are not looking to upgrade to a new phone yearly. It's just prohibitively expensive and a pain in the ass. Consoles... Are nowhere near that necessary. While I don't think the makers of Ouya are counting on everyone to upgrade yearly, I'm also not sure they'd have the consumer base to justify yearly upgrades, even if mobile architecture is improving at that pace. It's not a necessity and nobody wants to upgrade even the things that are essentials that often. There are reasons that companies wait five years to release new consoles, and that is a major one. I don't want to buy *any* console or part every year or even two years. Fuck that. It's why I went with the parts I did; they should still be serviceable at the least in a few years. Another reason would be that PC architecture takes time to improve and make the next gen of consoles a step up from what we had previously. And all this is without getting into >mobile gaming Honestly? I don't think it's all that great, but fuck, I'm not part of the target audience for Ouya, and I don't think many of us are either. I'm willing to pay $40-60 for an experience the mobile scene simply cannot deliver at this point, and far more inclined to do so than I am to pick up whatever random $1-5 game on iOS/Android is getting hype this month. There are a few games on my phone I'd be perfectly willing to play on a console (Chaos Rings, Symphony of Eternity), but getting the console for those few games seems silly to me, doubly so when my phone's screen is better than any of my TV's screens. |

Reading that article the only thing I could think was "Yup...this is going to be a disaster." As you pointed out, mobile phones is one thing, we use them daily for a multitude of tasks, however consoles aren't as vital in our day to day lives. No one is going to be willing to fork out money for a new console on a yearly basis, some people are hesitant upgrading from their current consoles because the new ones aren't offering enough exciting aspects. And I can't imagine how annoying this would be for game developers. |

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2013...her-of-the-year Yeah, I know this isn't exactly breaking news, but it's worth posting anyway. I'm not sure how Metacritic comes up with these ratings (critic ratings? user ratings? a combination of both?), but no matter how you slice it, there's a significant disconnect here. Gamers voted EA the worst company of 2012, did they not? Yet apparently, EA had the best games of the year according to Metacritic. I guess my question is, how does this happen? I can understand professional reviewers having to be objective and ignore all the EA hullabaloo/any shitty ass DRM the game might have and focus on the game itself. I suppose I can understand that the people spamming a Consumerist poll and the people giving EA games tens on Metacritic would be entirely different sects of gamers, too. http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2013...to-win-next-gen I suppose it's no shock that the PS4 won't have backwards compatibility. The Cell architecture was always kind of out there. I just don't see how the PS4, which sounds like it's going to have a more traditional architecture, can emulate the PS3. I hate this lack of backwards compatibility. It's as if console makers are planning for their systems and games to go obsolete. What happens thirty years down the road when people want to learn more about the history of this medium and want to find a copy of, say, Journey? It might not even be on Sony's servers and finding a working PS3/a disc-based copy of the game won't be all that easy. A great book, movie, television show, song or some other work of art never goes obsolete. It's still passed down through the ages. Great video games? Seems to me that they're dragged along kicking and screaming through mediocre online services offered by the major three console makers. (I know part of this is that they're more complex and that there isn't a standard format for games, but still. Great games should not be lost, like any other great work of art.) |

That's a good point, man. It's hard for those who didn't own the classic games to play them again outside of semi-shitty emulators. Something that always bugs me with the controllers or just video game trends in general. The controller. What's the point of all of this touch silliness? It's not like it's that great. Sure it works, but it makes the cost go way up. Why not take that cost and invest in making the controllers more ergonomic? Look at the six-axis for the PS3 controller. Who uses that thing? No noteworthy developers have taken great usage of that thing. They could have improved their ancient controller and made it a lovechild of the GameCube and 360 controller. And I don't see how EA made it to #1 on that list either. They publish a bunch of games, but it's rare that the games they publish blow your face off. I guess their casual stuff reels in the votes? Who even uses metacritic? |

Some more rumors/leaks about the Xbox 720. Kotaku says that this guy's information matches up with many of the rumors that Kotaku's been hearing, and apparently the guy actually has a 720. Take that as you will. Anyways, according to this source, the new Xbox will require Kinect to be connected and calibrated in order to even use the 720. A new improved Kinect (it tracks more motion and allows for up to 6 people) will be shipped with every 720. Games will now be installed to the 720's HDD immediately upon inserting a disc. This is to improve load times. The source claimed that you can play the game as it's installing, so you don't have to wait for it to finish. Also, the 720 will reportedly have a 500 GB hard drive, so there'll be a lot of space available. The 720 will have a new controller with a similar layout of the 360 controller. Old 360 wireless controllers will not work with the 720, because of "new wireless technology". No idea if that also includes wired controllers. Those were the main points of the article. You can read the rest article for the full list of 720 features according to this source. My main concern is the required Kinect. With everyone required to have a Kinect, developers can now include the Kinect more frequently in development. It's also a bad thing, though, because it'll increase the cost for the 720. Also, not everyone has enough space for a Kinect, so that could potentially be alienating potential buyers. Also, my sister just got a Kinect for Christmas and it'll be annoying if we have to get another. The installation thing is a welcome addition. 500GB is a lot of space, and if I ever use it up, I can just buy an external hard drive. It's not a big deal that I have to buy a new controller, but it is slightly annoying. I just hope that wired 360 controllers can also be used on the 720, but that's doubtful. |

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/vie...olonial-Marines ...Wow. Assuming this is true, it's probably one of the most (if not the most) unethical non-DRM things I've ever seen from the industry. I don't think I'll buy any Gearbox game if it turns out they did this shit. I understand not everything in a demo is going to be in the game. Things get changed and all that. What I do expect from a demo is that it's reasonably similar to the final product I'll be spending my money on. I don't expect much of the story, animations, and whatever else to be conjured from thin air for the sole purpose of a demo, as is being claimed here. That's bullshit. That is essentially false advertising. |

Wow... I've seen parts of a playthrough of the campaign on the PC. You'd think the graphics of the finished product, and on the PC at that, would be superior to a demo. Nope. Definitely not. The gameplay in that demo was really exciting, and it looked fantastic. Too bad the final game was pretty much for anyone, but hardcore Aliens fans. |

The PS4 controller has been leaked. It appears that the rumors of a touchpad are true. No idea what new features the touchpad will bring, but hey, we finally got a picture. There also appears to be a speaker on it. That could be either a mic for commands or something like what the WiiMote has. The only thing that bugs me is... what the hell is that big blue light on the top of it? Posted Image |
