The end of the presentation said "Holiday 2013", so I think it's safe to assume that means a November release. Anyways, although the PS4 presentation completely overshadowed it, Nintendo had a Japanese Nintendo Direct today. It looks like the major thing of interest from it was a new Shin Megami Tensei IV trailer. I'm really digging the music in this trailer. Only other information I'm seeing (that interests me, anyway) is Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons are finally getting released on the Virtual Console. Unfortunately, they're only releasing in Japan so far, but I'm sure there will be a US (and European) release not that long after. Oh, also, most of us already know this, but Watch_Dogs has been confirmed for a Wii U release. Although this is probably not related, it really feels like Ubisoft is doing whatever it can to apologize to Wii U owners for delaying Rayman Legends/to show they still have faith in the console, what with the ZombiU bundle, their games being on sale on the eShop, and the game's challenge mode getting a free release on there too. |

The games are coming to other territories. Pretty cool. I've never played them, so I'll definitely pick them up. |

The PS4 game trailers look stunning...but can it run the games at a stable 60 FPS? Or even 45 FPS? I guess we'll see. |

http://dudehugespeaks.tumblr.com/post/4424...es-and-quarters So apparently Cliffy B got really mad at someone and wrote this. I suppose I'll take some issue with the tone. It's all Econ 101 up in here, explained as if most of us have never taken an Econ course in high school. Yes, I know that shareholders are interested in making money off of their investment, not necessarily in making great art. Yes, I know developers need to put a roof over their heads and all that comes along with it. Yes, I know that microtransactions and DLC work, otherwise they wouldn't be done. Yes... You get it. This is very, VERY basic stuff. We know this. The problem he's discussing isn't our grasp of economics; it's that a lot of companies in this industry put forth a lot of effort into making gamers think developers/publishers are their friends. When companies we used to love and think of as "our friends" use certain shady business tactics in the name of making a few more dollars, we feel betrayed and lash out. It does not help the justification is oftentimes a lie, or at best greatly exaggerated (see: piracy, used games). I love Atlus's products, but there is no way in hell they are my friend. They simply make games I enjoy and don't fill them with bullshit, which I then buy. That is as far as our relationship goes. If they start doing online passes and all that, well, I'm gone, though I'd really hate to miss out on Persona 5 or something. Publishers/developers cannot have it both ways. They cannot try to be our friends when they want to sell us something, only to turn around and insist they are a business when responding to our complaints. It's hypocritical bullshit. Anyway, thoughts on a few quotes. "To produce a high quality game it takes tens of millions of dollars, and when you add in marketing that can get up to 100+ million. In the AAA console market you need to spend a ton of cash on television ads alone, never mind other marketing stunts, launch events, swag, and the hip marketing agency that costs a boatload in your attempts to “go viral” with something." This surely could never be a huge part of the problem. If you spend a lot of money, you then have to make a lot of money in kind in order to turn a profit. I'm not going to waste my time with a list of things that make huge/record-breaking profits, but they all have one thing in common: They are *safe*, and thus justified the tens/hundreds of millions invested. Nobody's advocating that companies burn tens or hundreds of millions on a "risky" IP because that is fucking stupid, but you'd think that the money made from a major IP could fund smaller, riskier indie games. This is how it works in other industries, but in this industry every game is like gambling with the studio's future. It's not a smart way to run a business IMO (Imagine if it were this way with every album or movie!), but then again we demand it because god forbid a new game come out with inferior graphics. "If you’re currently raging about this on GAF, or on the IGN forums, or on Gamespot, guess what? You’re the vocal minority. Your average guy that buys just Madden and GTA every year doesn’t know, nor does he care. He has no problem throwing a few bucks more at a game because, hey, why not?" Yeah, because vocal minorities have never been able to effect change and/or reach out to a less vocal majority. Being able to reach out and make others aware is essentially the history of successful protest. I somehow doubt it was millions of people complaining to Bioware/EA/on the internet about ME3's ending. Most people simply don't care that much. Tens of thousands? Perhaps a couple hundred thousand? I'd probably believe that, but when we're talking about a franchise like that, even five or low six figures is a relatively small number of the fanbase. And yet, the ending was changed. It helped to have the gaming media behind them as well, but still, there was a grievance and Bioware reacted to it. Don't ever think a relatively small number of people cannot effect change. It's rare but it happens. Don't ever tell us to shut up and take your bullshit, either. "Remember, if everyone bought their games used there would be no more games." Impossible of course - Used implies a product once was new. Well, unless Gamestop opened up every game just so they can then claim their products are now used, which would be unethical as hell. How about instead of trying to demonize the used game buyer, you make them a customer? DLC and microtransactions do not care if the disc is "new"; they only care if the person in question has the requisite money/points/whatever to make the purchase. I'm not against buying DLC for a used copy of a game. If I enjoy any game that much, I'll want to spend more money on content for it regardless of how I got it. Used games mean that we're taking less risk with IPs/genres we are not familiar with, and makes us more likely to shell out new game price for the next iteration in a given series. Most of us want to support this industry, but we have our responsibilities too, so we will occasionally buy used games. Being locked out of certain features (or even the whole game in gen eight, perhaps) until we pony up is bullshit. "And that brings me full circle to my main point. If you don’t like the games, or the sales techniques, don’t spend your money on them. You vote with your dollars." Exactly. The problem is that those of us who choose to vote against these practices by not offering up our dollars are vastly out-numbered and out-gunned by those voting with their dollars. This might make said practices right from a business perspective, but not necessarily from a moral perspective. We're not saying it's bad business. We're saying it's not right and we won't support it until it's rectified. |

I'll definitely get this because SMT, but I hope it has less escort missions. Ugh, escort missions in an SRPG are always the worst. I figure by the time I'm ready to tackle this game, it'll be out here on 3DS. So that'll be nice, I guess. |

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2011/08/accu...-snes-emulator/ VERY illuminating. If it takes this much effort to emulate an SNES properly, I see why it would be problematic to bring old Playstation 1-3 games to PS4. Of course, we should be able to keep our old games, so ideally I'd hope that a "standard" of some sort is eventually developed so we can do so. Probably won't happen any time soon, though. Anyway. ZSNES is generally good enough for me. It runs the games I'm likely to play and it does so quite well. I've never had any major issues, though I guess it's possible a good number of the games I play are amongst the 50 most popular games mentioned. Still, I might give BSNES a spin. Sounds like Star Ocean is a game that would benefit from BSNES, and that's one I've wanted to play. |

Posted Image lolea Anyway... http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/905323...rmath-king-kong Not necessarily news, but an interesting read. http://consumerist.com/2013/03/18/here-are...ica-tournament/ On the other hand, I guess this is news. I'm putting my money on EA defending their crown because of bad timing and pissing off one of the biggest net-savvy demographics. Also helps the competition is relatively weak outside of a few companies. |

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/24/arts/vid...gewanted=1&_r=0 "The estimated cost of the project is upward of $100 million, not including marketing expenses, which could add another $100 million, analysts said." I'm not sure how to feel. On one hand, Bioshock is a well-regarded series that's at least *trying* to tell good stories. On the other, 200 million is absurd and needing to sell 3.3 million copies just to break even is sheer insanity. EDIT: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/entertainm...video-game.html More like 7.4 million copies at full price to break even, assuming I did my math right. Holy. Shit. |

Holy dick...that's a lot of cash money yo. And 7,4 million copies to just break even is insane! That's risky business right there. Sure the games are popular, but are they that popular? |
