I'd say it's pretty telling we don't have an Xbone thread.

Anyway, some more Xbone news, this time straight from the source. (warning: tl;dr incoming)

http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/license

Starting with the news that I think most of us will find most interesting.

Quote:

Buy the way you want—disc or digital—on the same day: You’ll be able to buy disc-based games at traditional retailers or online through Xbox Live, on day of release.

That actually sounds pretty good. However, digital is cheaper than physical and I expect the product to be priced accordingly. There's a reason many PC games (not all obv) are $50 on release day. If I'm paying $60 or whatever the new price is this gen for both digital and physical, I'm going physical every time. If the price of digital does not fall with physical prices, I'm going physical every time.

Access your entire games library from any Xbox One—no discs required: After signing in and installing, you can play any of your games from any Xbox One because a digital copy of your game is stored on your console and in the cloud.  So, for example, while you are logged in at your friend’s house, you can play your games.

I'll concede that this is a cool feature. I'd wish that not taking part in the cloud bullshit is an option, but it's pretty clear that this console assumes online access, so...

Still think the cloud is as much about DRM as it is about what the cloud can do.

Quote:

Give your family access to your entire games library anytime, anywhere: Xbox One will enable new forms of access for families. Up to ten members of your family can log in and play from your shared games library on any Xbox One. Just like today, a family member can play your copy of Forza Motorsport at a friend’s house. Only now, they will see not just Forza, but all of your shared games.  You can always play your games, and any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time.

Possibly exploitable but cool. I'd have to think Microsoft has ways to make sure you aren't exploiting this by calling ten friends "family" (as I would do), but who knows.

Trade-in and resell your disc-based games: Today, some gamers choose to sell their old disc-based games back for cash and credit. We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers.  Microsoft does not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers, or consumers for enabling transfer of these games.

Oh man, why am I smelling BULLSHIT?

Quote:

Give your games to friends: Xbox One is designed so game publishers can enable you to give your disc-based games to your friends. There are no fees charged as part of these transfers. There are two requirements: you can only give them to people who have been on your friends list for at least 30 days and each game can only be given once.

EDIT: I misinterpreted this. Thought it was about loaning games to friends. Pretty big derp.

Anyway, obviously you can only give a game away once, but can the new owner give it away again? I don't understand the logic behind the 30 day friend requirement now. If I want to add someone for the sole purpose of giving my property away, I should be able to do that.

In our role as a game publisher, Microsoft Studios will enable you to give your games to friends or trade in your Xbox One games at participating retailers. Third party publishers may opt in or out of supporting game resale and may set up business terms or transfer fees with retailers. Microsoft does not receive any compensation as part of this. In addition, third party publishers can enable you to give games to friends. Loaning or renting games won’t be available at launch, but we are exploring the possibilities with our partners.

This is why I was smelling bullshit. Obviously most third parties will go out of their way to ensure Gamestop can resell their games even if they have to cut some kind of deal, but what does this system mean for mom-and-pop retailers? There's also the distinct possibility third parties allow no resale whatsoever. Not even legal according to First Sale Doctrine. (but lol @ consumer rights in the US)

Seems to me that Gamefly and Redbox aren't on board with this system - Why else would rental not be available at launch? Why should they be? It threatens to upend their business model with no benefit to them.

Moving on now.

A new generation of games with power from the cloud: Because every Xbox One owner has a broadband connection, developers can create massive, persistent worlds that evolve even when you’re not playing.

Yes, it's totally smart business to throw away the ~25% of your consumers who never connected a 360 to the internet! Sure, 25% isn't a majority, but we're talking in the billions of dollars here from console sales alone. Live subscriptions and games are another huge chunk of change. That is not an insignificant amount of cash Microsoft just threw away.

There's also the whole reliability issue, but Microsoft is assuming near 100% reliable broadband. If you don't have that, you don't matter to them.

Quote:

While a persistent connection is not required, Xbox One is designed to verify if system, application or game updates are needed and to see if you have acquired new games, or resold, traded in, or given your game to a friend. Games that are designed to take advantage of the cloud may require a connection.

The former had best be optional, but the latter is unacceptable. Sure, it sounds convenient and all, but I don't want a system spying on me to see what I'm doing with my games.

Quote:

With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection, but you can still watch live TV and enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies.

Confirmation of the unacceptable. This right here is a dealbreaker in and of itself.

Moving on again.

You are in control of what Kinect can see and hear: By design, you will determine how responsive and personalized your Xbox One is to you and your family during setup. The system will navigate you through key privacy options, like automatic or manual sign in, privacy settings, and clear notifications about how data is used. When Xbox One is on and you’re simply having a conversation in your living room, your conversation is not being recorded or uploaded.

Well, assuming all this is true, we're safely out of tinfoil hat territory.

I never thought people were going to sit in some room with a shitton of monitors or whatever and spy on us. Just isn't feasible. What is feasible is algorithms tailoring advertisements to us. While this is a legitimate worry, it's also not quite the same as people watching your every move.

I do find it a bit disheartening that they never specified what they could do with any of the information they've gathered. Even if I allow it to leave my Xbone, they never said they won't sell it to third parties.

Some of what you quoted sounds decent, but most of it still sounds too vague. It seems like they are really trying to pull the wool over our eyes with the whole daily internet connection and mandatory kinect. Seems too convenient to me that both of those things are mandatory. I aint gonna put away my tinfoil hat anytime soon lol.

Yeah, when I said "tinfoil hat", I meant it more so for the people who are like "OMG KINECT WILL SPY ON ME, MY FAMILY, MY DOGGEH AND KITTEH, AND TEH GUVMENT WILL HAZ ALL TEH ACCESSEZ", not people who have legitimate gripes against an anti-consumer system.

Of course, this train left the station long ago. Privacy is definitely worth worrying about, but most people still own a smartphone and that technology's privacy failings are well-documented. Not saying people should just bend over, accept it, and buy an Xbone, but it goes beyond the Xbone.

I am pretty much settled on ditching Microsoft for Sony at this point. I don't think any amount of awesome exclusives at E3 would make me change my mind now. I had thought that Microsoft would have been smart enough to NOT pull any of this stuff. I used to defend them as well.

Ah well, I've gone my whole life without touching anything Sony. I guess now's a good time to start. WiiU and PS4 are gonna be my buddies next gen.

I would not count Sony in just yet. They hwve not come out and said much else about their system in the last few weeks. Best to just wait and see.

So Metro: Last Light had 10% of the budget that its competitors (presumably AAA studios) had, yet the game is universally considered to be one of the most graphically impressive out there.

I've always thought it was the graphics that might be adding so much to the costs, but apparently The Witcher 2 cost eight million to develop, and now Metro: Last Light cost relatively little to develop. If one of the two major causes I thought were responsible for bloat is untrue, that leaves only one in my mind: The insanely huge and inefficient AAA costs.

If your game is good, we don't care if it cost you 8 or 80 million to make. However, the 8 million dollar failure might not close an AAA studio and might not necessitate eroding consumer rights.

PS4 Games Will Cost $59.99

Just gonna leave this here and see your thoughts about it since I don't know how much games are supposed to be anywhere else. Although, I kinda expected this but this is just too expensive for me.
