Seems weird that they even banned the console in the first place. Shouldn't punish your customers. |

Well, it apparently was taken down due to copyright infringement, but if an unboxing video violates that, then copyright law is more fucked than I thought. |

http://kotaku.com/welcome-to-the-amazon-pl...tore-1462747295 This may not be gaming "news" per se, but I did not know where else to put it. All in all, I think this is a good step forward for purchasing digital content online for sony consoles going forward. Before this there was just one way to buy any digital content, their online store. Now there may end up being some competition which could lower some prices. Heres hoping they will allow other online retailers this opportunity! |

Yup, this could wind up being a great thing if Amazon is allowed to set its own prices. Then again, I can't imagine Amazon entering any partnership where they'd have to keep the prices on their digital content higher than on their physical content; it just wouldn't make any sense for them. Of course I'm sure Sony gets its cut, so in this case competition is also mutually beneficial. Hopefully Microsoft follows suit sooner than later. Nintendo, as always, will do its own thing, even if the new things Sony and Microsoft are doing make more sense than the old things. On that note, a great idea implemented horribly. This defeats the fucking *purpose* of IDs! Sure, it's nice that we can transfer our data to another 3DS, but having to do so undermines the convenience we expect of an account system. http://www.siliconera.com/2013/11/13/can-o...-id-single-3ds/ |

http://www.ign.com/videos/2013/11/05/call-...gen-vs-next-gen I know you guys might be like >CoD, but seeing a side-by-side comparison of the seventh and eighth gen versions of this game is pretty interesting. I'd say that the seventh gen graphics look like a PC game on low. Most modern games even at that setting/on consoles still look pretty good, though they might not look so pretty close up, might have shorter draw distance, etc. The new consoles bring that quality to about high, though PC versions of cross-platform games will obviously still blow away the new consoles. I think the biggest thing to come of this gen will be the improvement of things like lighting. Take a look at the underwater parts of this vid; the lighting is far better on the new consoles than it is on the old ones. There's also less of a bloom effect going and this game doesn't look like it was made in three colors on PS4/One. Everything just looks more clear (idk if that's the word I want to use, but I'll roll with it) on the new consoles, too. Physics and AI will hopefully improve too, though it's obviously harder (if not impossible) to see any improvement on those areas in a gameplay video. |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYqYLfm1rWA Part 4 of Tropes vs. Women. I get what she's trying to say, but for the first time in the series I find myself wishing her ideas were communicated a bit better. There's one point where she seemingly implies pretty much all visual indicators that a character is woman are bad. It's not that they're bad; it's that they are used to signify femininity instead of designing and writing a believable female character. Additionally, a lot of her criticisms are about older games. While there is value in analyzing games from the NES/SNES eras and even earlier than that because understanding the past is important and all, I'd also want to focus as much/more on modern games because they are the ones influencing gaming culture and possibly even popular culture as a whole if they're big enough titles. Admittedly there's a fair bit about NSMBU in here, but that leads to *another* criticism: A good amount of these games are not trying to tell serious stories! While there is still value in analyzing the tropes present in Mario or Pac-Man or the like, I would love to know where games that are trying to tell *serious* stories (Mario games have never counted) fail in these areas. The list of games in this video is essentially Mass Effect and a ton of less serious stories. I also wish the concept of transparency in sociology were explained. Basically it's the idea where we assume someone (or something, as in games) fits the societal norm unless otherwise indicated. I'd have assumed most of you were straight white males unless I were told otherwise, for example. We're getting to a point where sociological concepts need to be explained somehow, because it's not first day of Sociology 101 stuff anymore. (I'm not saying it's super complicated either because it isn't, but not everyone takes a course in sociology and these are the people you need to reach. Even a list of concepts mentioned would be awesome.) This is still a series worth watching and Sarkeesian still manages to get her ideas across without making the discussion overly academic, but IMO there are things she could do better. |

I basically agree with what Ro said here. I feel a lot of the points she conveys are either badgering at the same thing she's said before or simply not relevant to today. I'm pretty sure you could take any basic story and screw it round to be what your point wanted to be. The main reason I'm not a huge fan of this series is that a lot of it seems to be her thinking of her reasoning/the point she wants to make and then going to find evidence of it. Nowadays we have a lot of games that promote woman in them; Mirror's Edge, Tomb Raider, FFXIII, even CoD and Halo games allow you to play as women. The simple fact of the matter is that a huge portion of games are aimed at 12-18 year old boys who want to play as some armoured male badass. That said, there are some games which are beyond stupid for this, namely GTA5 and I don't think you can really forgive it because "oh well it's GTA". It's a game that basically single-handedly means this industry will never fully be taken seriously. I don't believe that males and females should be treated equally in stories and that's a very unpopular opinion. The audience the game is aimed at should be glorified for better immersion and the ability to essentially lose yourself as somebody you can relate to more heavily. Kinda rambled so apologies if it makes no sense =P |

Just the very fact that people name-drop games that have "strong female characters" is indicative of a problem. None of us needs to point out titles with strong male leads because they are ubiquitous. But something like Mirror's Edge, Tomb Raider, or FFXIII drops and game reviewers/gamers are all praising the game for the inclusion of a strong female character. Ideally Faith, Lara, and Lightning would be loved simply for being good characters, but due to a lack of good female characters, they're put on a pedestal. I'll spare you my rant on "strong female characters", but suffice it to say there is a reason I try to say "believable" instead. I suppose you can make a case that she's misconstruing some things in the games to make her points. Case in point for me would be Dixie Kong, because I've played every Donkey Kong game in the main series. She harps on how Dixie is essentially Diddy but male, but ignores the simple yet gigantic gameplay difference between the two: Namely, that her hair was also a gameplay mechanic that arguably made her the most OP Kong in the entire series. While I understand this series is by and large focused on narrative, you cannot divorce games from gameplay, especially when you've brought up mechanics yourself. (See: her mention of Super Princess Peach in an earlier vid) On that note, I could easily argue Donkey Kong is Nintendo's most progressive series. No female was ever damseled, the females aren't objectified, and three of the games in the Donkey Kong series (2, 3, and 64) have playable females. That said, I'd agree the characters aren't great but lol @ playing DK for characters. Everyone formulates an opinion and then tries to find shit to back it up. That's how discourse works. I'd be more concerned if I felt she were misconstruing things on purpose. I don't think she is, but at best gamers are going to be like, "you didn't play the game, did you?", and at worst they'll be like the most vocal haters have been. I do think she isn't a huge gamer (the lack of discussion on how mechanics inform narrative, the DKC thing, etc), but that's alright; we need non-gamers to critique the medium too. It's important that she knows her shit, though. Yes, demographics and money play a huge role in this. I don't know if this series will get to the elephant in the room that is development costs, but I hope it does. A lot of problems in the game industry stem directly from this, including but not limited to aiming games at 12-18 year old boys and writing filled with harmful tropes. But I'd be repeating myself there. |

I didn't even know they had opened up registration for it. That said, after the FFXIV beta, I doubt I'll ever enter an MMORPG beta again. Not my cup of tea. People complain JRPGs and loot-based games like Diablo are grindy as fuck, but MMORPGs are much worse. |

I forgot I had even signed up for the beta, to be honest. And I've never played an MMORPG, so I'm not sure what to expect. Plus I haven't played skyrim in about 7 months or so, so I'm extremely rusty. I might attempt the download and see what it's like. Not sure my computer will even be able to handle it anymore. |

I just got an invite too. I assume they just sent it out to everyone who likes The Elder Scrolls or Skyrim FB pages or something. I was looking for the system specs, but I don't see those on their site. I'd have to guess they won't be much more demanding than Skyrim, if at all. MMORPGs need a huge playerbase to make those insane profits, which means lower specs and less demanding games. But yeah, I still don't think I'll participate. |

Maybe they are doing a massive test to see what their servers can handle? I never played Skyrim on my computer, only on the ps3, so I would probably be very uncomfortable with the controls as well. I think the only thing I would be interested in is character creation. Because it's kind of like playing with dolls, tee hee |
