I guess I have to buy this game the next time I see it at ~$20. Well, I don't "have to" I guess, but it's SimCity and I'm a sucker for it. Now I just hope that there's a good mod or three to fix the supposedly horrendous AI, but that could take a while. *shrug* |

Audio-Technica unveils its first gaming headsets I realize this isn't within our price range, or the price range of most gamers in general (so Turtle Beach will likely remain king of the hill), but I love my Audio-Technica headphones, so fuck it wynaut post this here. |

Those definitely are pricey, however it seems like they will be the absolutely king for gamers. Linus got to test them out a little at CES, and he said that the microphone quality from the boom mic was amazing, in fact, he said it was the best boom microphone he'd ever heard on a gaming headset. That's impressive. I'm sure they not only will have amazing sound quality, but with an amazing microphone as well...well, that's a really intriguing headset for me...assuming I'd ever have the cash to blow on something like that. Maybe I'll buy them on an epic sale some... And in other news Titanfall will only have 12 players per match, however up to 48 combatants per match (24 AI characters as well as the titans for each player, so anywhere from 36 to 48 thingies on the field at once). This is a pretty interesting way to go about it. As for the AI, there's no official word on how they will act out, however I'd imagine they would work similarly to minions in LoL. They've also confirmed that they will not have a single player campaign in the game, something that I honestly applaud them for. Imagine how much money DICE, Infinity Ward/whatever spends on making a pretty explosion-y 5 hour campaign. Sure it's a good way to market the game, but it not only takes away from the development of the core part of the game (which in this case is obviously multiplayer), it's also really bad and boring 9/10 times, unless you're Halo or whatever and actually have a cool story. I really hope this becomes a trend for competitive shooters. Edited by Granskjegg, Jan 14 2014, 10:48 AM.

Yeah, I can definitely see these catching on amongst the enthusiast PC gaming crowd. I suppose there are also other groups of gamers who would enjoy high-end audio/a high-end microphone (competitive gamers in general, perhaps), but enthusiast PC gamers come to mind first because they're willing to drop a ton of money on their PC. Of course, this *is* Audio-Technica; they're not aiming for the average music listener/gamer in the first place. They're aiming for people willing to pay a premium for a premium product. But yeah, I'd recommend waiting for a sale. If those things hit $150 I'd tell you to snap them up if at all possible. As far as Titanfall goes, I did hear a bit about that supposed "controversy". Everyone seems to wait MOAR PLAYERS!!1 because MOAR PLAYERS!!!1 Idk, I find myself wondering if that's what's truly best for every game. The higher the number of players, the more toxic the community can become. Also, as games get more and more complex, more players might just make the game more chaotic than fun. It seems Titanfall has things going on other than "find the other players and shoot them until they die", so adding more players might not be the best way to improve that game. I wholeheartedly agree with their reasoning for no single player. We all know that most players play through the campaign once, if they touch it at all. If you look at the trophy stats for something like Mass Effect 3, you'll still find that maybe 40-50% of players beat it, and that is a story-driven game. I can imagine it's less for a FPS or something. You're not playing the campaign of any shooter because it's telling a stellar story; you're playing it because it's a glorified tutorial for the online mode, which is the real meat of almost any shooter these days. Cut the bullshit out and put the money into making the most balls-out online shooter you can make. The only problem there is you should probably realize it's essentially a rental, but I'd hope if you're going to pay new game price, you get new game playtime out of it. I guess this all comes down to them making the product they want to make. I have no interest in this product as it stands, but I still applaud them for making what they want to make instead of ensuring they check every item in some AAA checklist. Yeah, for sure. And one of the founders of Respawn actually explains really well why they have landed on the lower player count:
And he also had this to say:
Pretty good reasoning. As you all probably now by now, I've become quite a fan of shooters, and to me, Titanfall just looks like a lot of fun. I can imagine just hopping on, play a relatively short match and have a good time, without the boring concept of "shoot a guy until he dies" you talked about like CoD and BF (to a certain extent) is all about. It has that Call of Duty appeal where it's fast paced and you don't have to play for a long time like in Battlefield, and the jetpacks and mechs make it seem fresh. I don't know, it just looks cool. http://www.gamespot.com/articles/sales-screw-your-fans-says-indie-dev/1100-6417177/ Well, this is going to be a fun one to untangle. If you're only in it for the lowest prices, then yeah, the rational response is to wait a year or more until a game is like $5 during a Steam sale or something along those lines. If everyone did this, there would be no pre-orders/day one buys and this industry wouldn't have the glitzy AAA productions that it has. That shit costs a lot of money and you need a lot of people willing to invest $60+ (or even more willing to invest less, I guess) on a single game. Why do people do this? They want to play your game early and they have reasonable assurance that it'll be good. Those factors outweigh the knowledge that they could have had it at a lower price later. Sales don't happen out of the goodness of someone's heart. They happen because everyone involved realizes making some money is better than making no money. I think even this asshole would rather see me pay $2 for his game than just go to The Pirate Bay and download it, ensuring he sees nothing. Yeah, a sale culture exists, but it exists for two reasons: One, people don't have infinite money to spend on games. There are a ton of great games being made in both the indie and AAA sectors, and most people simply don't make the money to pre-order/buy them all on day one. I'd love to buy every game I want new on day one, but who amongst us can afford that? Two, people like to save money. This is so obvious I don't see a need to elaborate. I guess I understand that fans shouldn't have to pay more than someone who doesn't care as much, but what the fuck do you think fans do in every *other* field, entertainment or not? They pay more for a better product, usually because they want a better experience and/or more stuff. If someone is paying more, you should give them more and/or a better product. This is pretty hard to do in a marketplace defined by digital distribution, though. This pricing scheme worked with Minecraft, but that game got insane coverage. Even when it was a new idea (at least compared to what it is now), it got a fair bit of press coverage, people heard about it, they bought it, and wound up loving it. You still can't go a month without seeing someone created something well-known in that game, which is free publicity. It also helps that people want to like what other people like. Suffice it to say... This guy isn't Notch and this isn't Minecraft. Basically, this only works if your game is a hit. I don't think this game will be. This just strikes me as conceit. |

That model's better than the one the devs for Planetary Annihilation took. They charged $50 more than retail (retail is $40; total was $90) on Kickstarter to alpha test their game. |

Yeah, that was silly. I can understand charging more to be part of the alpha/beta (all the gaming Kickstarters do it), but $90 is ludicrous. Still, that tier had 1,543 backers, and the ones above it, which also included alpha access, had over 6,000 combined. I'm too lazy to add them up because lol who cares, but it seems a lot of its backers didn't mind the price. I do think that's a bit different because in most Kickstarters, you'll get things that might not see the light of day ever again. In other words, incentives to spend more money, which is the antithesis of waiting until a game hits $5 on Steam. But yeah, lol that $90 tier. I'd have just shelled out $10 more at that point and gotten the swag to go along with it. |

So apparently Wii u and 3DS didn't meet sales expectations, so there's now a million articles talking doom and gloom for Nintendo. Honestly though Nintendo does need to do something to get the Wii U to sell more. Not because they have to, they have enough money for it to fall, but because it would be a shame for all the cool features of the system scrapped in the next time because this one failed. What they need is two things. One they need a price drop. I personally think the system is priced well, but most people don't look at the fact that the controller is expensive and that is why it's an extra hundred dollars more than a PS3. The truth is Nintendo can afford to sell the systemat a loss, they have the reserves, plus they can make up for it with software. I'd say a fifty dollar drop with the addition of the pro controller. Fifty can make a big difference and by including the controller they can advertise that you can jump right multiplayer sessions the minute you but the console. Keep it bundled with Mario, there's no need to sacrifice sales of other better games. And maybe have occasionally special edition bundles without the extra controller for whatever single player game is out with special designs. Second, they need more games. Not because it doesn't have enough games or needs more games to sell the console, but because they need them to make back profits. A new Zelda and Mario galaxy would be great. Throw in a new metroid and star Fox that they heavily market. And start getting third party developers. Not necessarily the big ones releasing the same game every year, just more people making games for the console. Bethesda might not want to bring elder scrolls to the Wii U, but I'm sure there are plenty of other smaller developers that would be happy to bring a similar game to it with a little support to Nintendo, in which Nintendo could help advertise and get some money out of the game themselves. Just anything that will sell enough to make back whatever money I'd lost on the system. |
