http://www.destructoid.com/go-on-take-a-peek-at-persona-q-s-battle-system-272923.phtml?

Yup, it's pretty much the Etrian Odyssey battle system. The only difference that I saw was that all-out attacks are still present, which should make this easier than EO4 was. I'd be surprised if this game has the class system of Etrian Odyssey, since each character in Persona 3/4 has a clearly defined role.

Also, Shoji Meguro is a genius as always. DAT MUSIC.

Interesting piece here. GameSpot reviews Lightning Returns TWICE just to take another dump on it. Anyone who wants to read this trash is welcome to see.

Forgot I wanted to get to that article. Been playing Pokemanz and such.

I think the ideal reviewing system would involve three reviews: One from someone who is a fan of the genre, someone who isn't, and a neutral third party. However, this isn't a thing because it would involve two people who could be doing something else, like reviewing another game, writing another article or whatever. It might also require more staff, which would require more overhead, and like half of major gaming sites' visitors run some sort of adblocker.

I suppose I digress a little, but this is all to say: I have no problem with a second viewpoint, revisiting a game, or whatever else.

I'd agree with the review's byline. This *is* a poor place to start if you care at all about the story. It's the third game of a trilogy. It should be obvious why this is a bad idea if you care about story at all, which this reviewer seems to. If you really had to start with the XIII saga, I'd recommend the first game. It doesn't play as well as Lightning Returns, but it sets the stage for both sequels.

As far as starting Final Fantasy goes, I'd need to know what a player values in their game to make any sort of recommendation. Each title in the series is too different to just say "Final Fantasy *insert number* is the best starting point". I love XII and it was my first, but I'd find it hard to recommend to most people as a starting point. I don't think XIII is the best starting point for most either; it's just too different in terms of gameplay.

It seems the Noel and Snow arcs did nothing to grab the writer. Considering that I think these are two of the better arcs, I don't think the rest would do anything for him. The Fang arc is good as well, but the Sazh arc is excruciating, and the Caius arc introduces new plotholes (that he'd miss because he never played XIII-2).

The world didn't grab me either. It's a beautiful place, but there are very few people with stories that are worth a damn. Considering the setting is one in which people are essentially immortal, so much more could have been done with it, but complaining about this too much misses the point. It's never been the story of Cocoon, Gran Pulse, or Nova Chrystalis; it's always been the story of Lightning and company. Anyone who has kept up with this series has likely done so because they care about these characters, not the worlds they inhabit. That said, Lightning is a polarizing character, and I think a lot of this polarization stems from the fact she's (well, for the most part) a stoic. People either like that's she not the "typical whiny JRPG protagonist" or dislike the fact she rarely if ever emotes. I'm personally in the camp of "I am fucking sick and tired of stoics being treated like the only strong characters".

As for his thoughts on the gameplay, yes, it can be a bit hard on normal. Encounters with Reavers, Chocobo Eaters, and the like are not supposed to be easy, to say nothing of the bosses. Even normal encounters with things like Meonektons and Dryads can be annoying if you don't have an idea of what you're doing. I'd say "turn it down to easy", but you can't do this once you start the game, which is a design flaw on Squeenix's part. Then again, considering he admitted he hasn't played many JRPGs, not starting on easy seems like a silly choice.

I'd tell the average player to drop a game if they aren't feeling the first part or two of a story and are struggling with the gameplay. They have better things to do with their free time and I won't begrudge them for dropping something they're obviously not liking. However, this is a reviewer who gets paid to write professional reviews. I wouldn't accept a review if someone saw only half of a movie, listened to five songs on an album, watched the first half of a season/episode of a show, or read half a book. I expect a fully developed viewpoint from a professional, whether or not I'll wind up agreeing with it. I think that's my biggest problem with this review, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's yours.

That's cool. I might buy a Wii U when some truly interesting games release for it, still nothing interesting for me yet.

Anyway, I'm obviously getting this shit day one. It sounds a lot like Civ 5 mixed with Alpha Centauri, along with expansions to Civ V systems like espionage, which should be fucking awesome.

I'd pay cash money for a Snoop Dogg announcer in Dota 2.

Anyway, I bring you this glorious sale. I'm getting CTR and Tokyo Jungle at the least. I might get the Crash/Spyro games if I feel like spending some more money, idk.

http://www.destructoid.com/tales-of-xillia-2-coming-west-this-august-collector-s-edition-detailed-273589.phtml#ext

woo

"We changed the atmosphere to be a bit darker compared to the previous Tales of Xillia. In [the first game], the target audience is teenagers, 15-18, but for Tales of Xillia 2 our target audience is those who are older than 20 years old so we wanted to make a bit more mature and darker atmosphere."

not woo because dark and gritty do not necessarily equal mature and it's a lesson entertainment needs to realize

but i'm a sucker and i'll buy it anyway
