Hey look another TWD game

Not sure how I feel about this. Yeah, Overkill's Payday games are clearly inspired by L4D, but both of these games emphasize the use of guns, and TWD usually prefers not to use guns. So idk what they're gonna do here, but if it's good, I'll definitely get it and play it with the TWD people here.

EDIT: I know that the game could be completely original and unlike any co-op FPS we've seen before, but I'm just being skeptical because I haven't heard of any good first-person stealth games other than the original Thief games and Deus Ex, but these are both single-player games, so yeah I just don't have much hope for a good stealthy co-op FPS. Buuuut I won't give up on it yet.

Melee? Super Mario Sunshine? Paper Mario and TTYD in a bundle?! Completely fake?!?! Who knows. A game a month sounds great, though, and they're already starting to push "a big Nintendo game a month" starting September.

http://www.dromble.com/2014/06/07/why-women-are-the-key-to-success-for-nintendo/

Makes a lot of sense. Women aren't really targeted by any major console developer. Xbox and Playstation are all bout dat "core gaming experience", which more and more translates to something along the lines of "overly expensive adolescent male power fantasy trying desperately to be a 'mature' title", or if not that, online multiplayer. Nintendo is still about making *fun games*, even if their definition of fun games isn't aligned with the majority of Western gamers' definitions.

It wouldn't be the panacea for Nintendo's console woes, but Nintendo desperately needs an audience to call its own beyond "Nintendo fanboys". Sony/Microsoft/the PC market have a stranglehold on what is perceived as the "hardcore gamer". Trying to go for that demographic is a losing strategy if you can't/aren't willing to spend the big bucks on marketing and graphics like those companies. Nintendo hasn't shown that willingness in years, if ever.

There are also a lot of PC gamers who supplement their PC with Nintendo consoles/handhelds because Nintendo delivers what nobody else does. I don't think there's much overlap between this type of gamer/female gamers in general, but the one thing they probably have in common is an appreciation for different types of games than the ones that are currently popular. Luckily, Nintendo can do *that much* well.

I would love for Nintendo to focus on the female demographic. They already have what's needed to pursue this avenue and doing it without being horribly stereotypical. If Nintendo needs to go for any 3rd party game it needs to be The Sims 4 though due to going for the female demographic. Nintendo has plenty of games that would appeal to females and they have plenty of female characters they could use. Not to mention that females also enjoy games like Mario and Zelda, in fact they normally love those games.

If they were the least bit smart they would start marketing towards women in all seriousness. More and more women become gamers as gaming becomes more socially acceptable and there is no console that is actively pursuing them.

And yes I realized I just said a lot of what was already in the article.

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/microsoft-says-tomb-raider-xbox-exclusivity-is-a-w/1100-6421784/

Let's play a game, where I pick apart a bunch of statements and point out why they're really fucking stupid.

"It really was nothing against any other platform."
Right away you know he's full of shit. Of course this is an attack against PC and PS4. While I'm sure the suits at Sony won't be crying into their beers over having one less title for X amount of time, and the guys who run the various PC services won't either, it's still depriving them of a big title in the hopes that getting said big title can prop up Microsoft's sales/bottom line.

Wii U most likely isn't getting this game. Tough shit. But we all know this.

"Certain people won't believe this: it doesn't come from an evil space."
Of course we don't believe this, because publishers have shown time and time again that when it comes down to a big sack full of money versus the consumer, well, the consumer loses out almost every time.

I don't believe timed exclusives are the spawn of Satan or some shit. I do believe that this level of spin is making Microsoft look even worse than it already did. Like, what do you gain? Just shut the fuck up and help Crystal/Square make the best fucking game they can.

"It comes from a space where there's an opportunity that maps really well with what we need in terms of the genre, and a partner that's looking for a partnership."
Translation: We'd rather not put a first or second party on a great exclusive, so we'll just buy a window instead.

All's fair in love and war I guess, but I'd much rather see a company developing a reason to buy its machine (read: an exclusive) rather than buy an exclusive window.

"The games business today is an expensive business to be in. If you're going to build shows like [Gamescom], and IP, and marketing budgets, in certain instances a partnership is a good way for a publisher to find a way to get to the level they think they need to break out."
This is *true*, but I have no sympathy for anyone involved. They made it this way by pandering to a relatively small base that wants nothing but the highest PRODUCTION VALEUS!!111, everything else be damned. What the silent majority wants is games that are fun to play, and those don't need multi-million dollar marketing budgets, photo-realistic graphics, online multiplayer, etc, etc.

You made your bed and I hope you burn in it, to be frank.

"Spencer added that big games like Rise of the Tomb Raider are "good for the [video game] industry," adding that if these types of games grow even larger, the industry stands to benefit."
If a game grows larger, that means a publisher has to make more profit to justify its investment. This is very basic economics.

However, an AAA production (or any game, for that matter) does not have the revenue stream that Hollywood does. Any idiot can find the $20, assuming ticket/concessions, that it costs to see a movie. The audience doesn't need to buy a dedicated movie machine on top of that just to see the movie. While most of us do have dedicated movie machines in Blu-Ray/DVD players, we can decide if a movie is worth our time after seeing it in the theater or on TV. With games, not so much, because the demos are ass and rental might as well not exist anymore.

Games can do what no other medium can, in offering us additional content like expansion packs/DLC, but a lot of that shit sucks ass. I don't want some fucking costume pack, 5-10 levels, 100k gold, etc; I want new quests, new characters, and shit that does more than make my experience easier.

I feel if games get too much larger, prices will either go up or the bubble will burst. I'm not inherently opposed to $70-80 titles, but if I'm going to pay that kind of money, I better be getting a fucking amazing game. That also cuts into my funds for other games, which means I might be waiting for the Summer/Winter Steam sales even more than I already do.

Never heard of these guys, but apparently I have one of their games. Yay bundles with games I'll never play (or at best, play in a few years), I guess.

Some indie developers have a really good social media presence and I enjoy following them/playing their shit, but they won't care if I become disillusioned with them tomorrow for whatever reason. They don't know I exist, they don't know you exist. They only know we exist if something happens that affects a big enough portion of their fanbase/potential buyers.

Gamers aren't nice people, but that has more to do with gaming/nerd culture in general than anything to do with indie games. As long as we aren't taking gamers/nerds to task for being dickweeds, the culture will always be like this. It's really that simple.

I suppose the gist of the article is that the "sale culture" of Steam/the PC marketplace in general is hurting these developers' bottom lines. I won't deny that Steam, Humble Bundle, etc, have played a big part in pushing prices almost as low as they can possibly go, but there's a bit more to it than that. Mobile gaming has played arguably a bigger role than Steam has, if only because everyone has a fucking smartphone these days. Sure, Steam has like 70 million users, but the number of people who own smartphones is probably ten times higher.

There's also the indies themselves. Once Minecraft became a huge deal, it seemed like every indie and his bunny started developing/releasing shit. On the other hand, it could be argued that Minecraft's success made indie games worth covering for the gaming media. I'd guess it's a bit of both, in that some were always there, toiling in obscurity, but Minecraft made others think, "I might be able to make a living off of vidya gaems!!1" Now we have a deluge of games of highly variable quality. There are some real gems amongst the bunch, even if you might only play them for a few hours, but there's also a bunch of shit.

There are just so many games now. PC has an entire 30+ year catalog, if you're willing to jump through the hoops to make many of those titles work. Otherwise, you're mostly left with what digital distributors have to offer. There are also AAA productions, indie productions, titles that are neither AAA nor indie (Atlus works as an example of this), free to play titles, mobile games... In short, we can afford to be picky because there are just so many games and a lot of those are very cheap/free games.

And this is now beginning to permeate to consoles, which also have a substantial catalog. It's not going to get better now that Sony/Ninty/MS are making efforts to offer games at competitive prices. First party Nintendo titles will probably always be immune to sale culture, but we're willing to buy their shit at $50.

All this said, I don't buy many bundles anymore. Not because I feel they're hurting anyone, but because I feel like I've filled in most of the gaps in my collection. I have most of the titles I want, and paying for like 5-7 extra titles to get at the one I really want doesn't appeal to me at this point. I'd rather just buy it separately, even if that means I'm likely waiting until it hits $10-20 (or even less) so I can pick it up relatively cheaply.

Sales aren't the problem. Too many games are. Choice is great and all, but the downside of choice means that there's too much competition both for our dollars and our time.

http://www.destructoid.com/this-old-school-jrpg-arrives-on-pc-later-this-week-279876.phtml

mite b cool

At $2, I'll definitely be picking this up. The trailer isn't half bad, either. Looks and sounds a lot like an SNES game, though I think the sound quality is obv better than most SNES games.

I still wish more JRPGs would come to PC, but whatever, I can always find time to play something like this.

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2014/08/26/nintendo-uk-website-details-mario-kart-8-dlc-including-link.aspx

Mario Kart with Animal Crossing, Zelda, and F-zero? Yes please. Twelve dollars for six characters, eight karts, and 16 tracks? Hell fucking yes. Considering I paid $60 for 32 tracks, 16 for $12 is a steal. Hopefully the add a couple packs like this every year, because that will be well worth it. Oh god, best DLC ever imo
