There's two different packs but you can buy them together for cheaper. Very interested in seeing the tracks although I wasn't aware Mario Kart 8 was getting paid DLC. Not sure how I feel about DLC on that front - does kinda explain the shitty roster - but I'll still get it for obvious reasons.

Eh, the roster doesn't bother me. It's not like on the last game where they all had individual stats

Yup, it's that time again.

I don't think any of us need a trigger warning (it's not something that's come up here), but: Trigger warning. This video is even more disturbing and powerful than the last one was. If there's any one video that can drive home the points she's making, it has to be this one.

I don't think I can say it much better than Anita does in these quotes. I could elaborate, but these quotes are so powerful that I don't see the use in doing so. Bold is my emphasis.

"It’s a lazy shorthand for “evil” meant to further motivate the protagonist to take the villain down and help justify the excessive violence committed by the player in these games."

"These women and their bodies are sacrificed in the name of infusing “mature themes” into gaming stories. But there is nothing “mature” about flippantly evoking shades of female trauma. It ends up sensationalizing an issue which is painfully familiar to a large percentage of women on this planet while also normalizing and trivializing their experiences.

Sexual and domestic violence is at epidemic levels in the real world; one out of every five women in the United States will be raped in their lifetimes. One in four will be sexually assaulted. And women involved in prostitution are at a much higher risk of violence because they are seen as vessels to be used by others rather than as fully human.

So when games casually use sexualized violence as a ham-fisted form of character development for the “bad guys” it reinforces a popular misconception about gendered violence by framing it as something abnormal, as a cruelty only committed by the most transparently evil strangers. In reality, however, violence against women, and sexual violence in particular, is a common everyday occurrence often perpetrated by “normal men” known and trusted by those targeted.

The truth is that the vast majority of cases are committed by friends, colleagues, relatives, and intimate partners. The gendered violence epidemic is a deep-seated cultural problem present in the homes, communities and workplaces of many millions of women all over the world. It is not something that mostly happens in dark alleys at the hands of cartoon villains twisting nefarious-looking mustaches.

I should also note that the problem cannot be solved by simply finding the bad evil men and killing them all – as these game narratives invariably imply again and again.
"

"What does it say about our culture when games routinely bend or break the laws of physics and no one bats an eye? When dragons, ogres and magic are inserted into historically influenced settings without objection. We are perfectly willing to suspend our disbelief when it comes to multiple lives, superpowers, health regeneration and the ability to carry dozens of weapons and items in a massive invisible backpack. But somehow the idea of a world without sexual violence and exploitation is deemed too strange and too bizarre to be believable."

It's pretty hard to say "gaming culture" is a thing, let alone a good thing. What good has a "gaming culture" done for games, let alone the world? I can post about Awesome/Summer Games Done Quick or something all I want, but at the end of the day, that's dwarfed by the sheer amount of negativity that comes from gamers/"gaming culture". We're more responsible for bullshit console wars, hating on certain types of games/certain companies we dislike, flaming gamers for having different preferences, harassing (generally) women who dare to criticize something about our beloved VIDYA GAEMZ!!!12@!, and so on and so forth.

It doesn't help our most visible spectacle, the one time when the mainstream deigns to pay attention to our hobby, is E3, which is (outside of Nintendo obv) basically a convention for Hollywood-esque spectacles/glorified violence simulators. People see this and assume it's all there is to our hobby. This is obviously wrong, but perception is a very hard thing to change. E3 is probably a laughingstock to enthusiasts of other hobbies, as it damn well should be for being so myopic.

On a more personal level, I find it harder and harder to just start up a game. Certainly the biggest part of this is owning too many damn games, paralysis by analysis as applied to vidya, but it's funny. At one point I said, "sure, I want to play this at some point", so I picked it up for a few dollars because yay Steam sales/bundles. Now? I just don't care about a lot of these games, and I don't think it has very much to do with the games. I think part of it is not wanting to be associated with a lot of the sewer scum that calls itself "gamers". Knowing that these... things... that masquerade as humans likely enjoy these games makes me a little more reticent to start them up and potentially enjoy them. I know I'm not like them, you know I'm not like them (and vice versa, I know you're not like them), but not everyone does.

Maybe this is just a temporary malaise, I don't fucking know. But in the meantime I find it far easier to just pick up a new book, watch a new anime, read more in preparation for FOOTBAWL season, or something along those lines.

I'd like to note that the anti-Sarkeesian brigade is now shitposting on obviously progressive sites. It's not a flood; it seems to be the same few names doing the shitposting. But I don't get this mentality. It's Thinkprogress; they aren't exactly influential in gaming spheres nor do they cover gaming on the regular, though I think they would be good at it because their examinations of pop culture are very good. The only thing they're going to accomplish is upsetting the userbase of that si-

Wait that's the objective. It sure as shit isn't constructive discussion. I wish they'd realize that all this does is prove her point.

Nintendo are holding a Direct for the 3DS at 12 my time today. Considering the 3DS version of Sm4sh launches in two weeks for Japan, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw the full roster here.

omg im posting about an actual video game

I mean, this shit mite b cool. Considering that it's Harmonix, I expect great things in the music department, but I hope the rest of the game is awesome too.

EDIT: Also Shulk. Not very surprised or hyped because he's the obvious Xenoblade representative. I'd have been happier with Riki or Melia, as they would bring different playstyles than almost anyone on the roster, but Shulk's Monado might have some interesting possibilities.

I didn't watch most of the Direct due to it being in Japanese but Xenoblade is apparently getting a 3DS port. There's a new 3DS as well which seems to have better hardware but I didn't understand most of it.

The Xenoblade 3DS remake is going to be exclusively for the New Nintendo 3DS, and other games are currently in development exclusively for it as well.

Wait, so it's a new console? Or is it like the Sega CD/32X for the Mega Drive? That's a terrible idea if it's the latter...

It's a 3DS capable of doing all the current 3DS things, but with better hardware that will allow it to play some games that the current 3DS isn't able to play.

That seems really silly. Surely they should just wait and make an entirely new console instead of confusing people even further with a new console that's not a new console? I really don't see myself spending £180 or w/e it is on a console that I - and many millions of people - already own so I can play some exclusive games. If those games are amazing then I'd consider it but right now I'm very skeptical.

If Nintendo had a trade-in program I'd be all over that shit in a heartbeat. I don't see why it couldn't be done, with digital games being linked to our NNIDs and such. Even if it's something like "trade in your old 3DS and pay ~$50 for the new one", that'd be a decent program.

As it is, this kinda screws over everyone who bought a 3DS. Either we won't upgrade (I'd wager this is true of a significant amount of us), or we'll upgrade and have bought two 3DS systems. Neither is particularly appealing to me.

I love Xenoblade and all, but I'd just buy it for Wii again so I can play it on the Wii U. /shrug

I'll be getting it, but that because I was planning on upgrading to the xl Anyway so there's no reason not to get it. Especially considering how much I love using the 3d, but don't because of how annoying it can get.
