Direct was pretty meh. Majora's Mask 3D was obv the best part of it and that was sprung on us at the start. X stuff wasn't all that great. Nice to see more of X, but holy shit that neighborhood. I can only assume it's incomplete, because that shit is jarring. Splatoon having a single-player mode is pretty coo' even if that obviously won't be the main draw of the game. Beyond that dun curr. http://www.destructoid.com/hard-in-the-uplay-nt-ubisoft-pulls-upcoming-pc-games-from-steam-283546.phtml Ubi showing us just how much they care about PC gamers. I get why they want to push uPlay but in order to do so, they have to make an effort to make that an appealing service to us. Origin is still not as good as Steam, but at least it's trying and resistance to it is decreasing somewhat. |

If the final boss in Project S.T.E.A.M isn't John Wilkes Booth I have lost all faith in game writers. Don't screw this up. |

Blizzcon started today, and the announcements started pretty much right off the bat. They annouced Overwatch, which is a retooling of the sorta cancelled Titan project that has been in development for years. Looks to be a shooter in the vein of Team Fortress 2. There is also a trailer for Starcraft II: Legacy of the Void. Needless to say, I am super excited for that one. There was also this, wherein Blizzard's CEO condemns Gamergate and all that, admittedly with out actually saying Gamergate. |

http://grantland.com/hollywood-prospectus/call-of-duty-advanced-warfare/ Wait, WHAT? netw3rk actually used his real name to write a column? That aside, I agree with pretty much all of this. The fact that we often have to mow down hundreds of soldiers, monsters, aliens, whatever, dilutes the impact of doing so from a narrative perspective. I don't expect generic enemies to have backstories or personalities or anything, but it often feels like enemies are just there because that's what we expect in most types of games. Very few games succeed in making enemy encounters of ANY kind feel like they have any sort of gravitas, and those that do succeed usually do so by making the fights difficult as opposed to giving them any emotional heft. The last time I felt something was, well, chapter 10 of FEA. Mechanics inform narrative. As long as our mechanics are dedicated to providing a challenge as opposed to delivering a quality narrative, the stories that go best with challenge are the ones we'll continue to see, especially in AAA productions. It's also the reason that the games with the best stories are the least like "traditional" video games. |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tF8m0q_CQM&feature=youtu.be WELCOME TO BIZARRO VIDYA, EVERYONE If you're unaware of Jack Thompson, I advise you to Google the name. Suffice it to say this is an extremely unlikely alliance. This is just... wow... I don't even know. |

http://www.destructoid.com/so-what-s-the-deal-with-shin-megami-tensei-x-fire-emblem-anyway--284562.phtml? plz no I know that Atlus likes to wait until they have something tangible before they show us anything (we've only had one P5 trailer and I don't expect gameplay until near release), but this is ridiculous even by Atlus standards. No teaser, no gameplay, no nothing. This would have been an awesome game even if the cast were only characters from the most recent entries in each series. I mean, I'd hope for characters from other titles (Nocturne, Radiant Dawn, etc, etc), but it'd still *work* with SMT IV/Awakening characters. Blah. I hope that this is just a rumor. |

The Game Awards was fucking atrocious and I hate myself for watching it. You see, I watched it because I expected something passable since it was no longer tied to Spike, who we all know produced a truly terrible show in the VGAs, culminating in last year's abomination. It was still somewhat corporate, but that was to be expected. Award shows with production values/actual industry support don't appear out of thin air. I expected ads, appearances from people representing big publishers, AAA games to be nominated for/win awards, all that stuff. It's all in the game, y'know? I was hoping for an awards show that celebrated our medium and did not insult our intelligence. You can argue it was a celebration and I'd be inclined to agree with you to some degree, but it still insulted our intelligence. I could break this shit down but that's a waste of my time to type up and it's a waste of your time to read. I'll hit some of the highlights/the lowlights, I guess. Highlights: -ZELDA WII U. Not sure it was worth the suffering but it looked incredible. -Koji Motherfucking Kondo playing at various points on this show. As you might expect, he played Nintendo stuff. Both Mario and Zelda songs were played at appropriate points and it was as good as you'd expect. -Imagine Dragons was actually not bad, even when playing their original stuff. I'd say it was about half Zelda, half one of their songs. Given that it was an acoustic performance, the most annoying elements of their music weren't present, which I feel helped. -Lindsay Sterling's performance was good. She looked into it, which always helps. -Tacoma from Fullbright. We didn't see much but NEW FULLBRIGHT. -The time given to indie games in general. Sure, it could have been more but it feels like they showed off indie games they were passionate about and that was awesome. -Some celebrities who actually looked like they wanted to be there. Kiefer Sutherland comes to mind. -Nintendo games winning awards. -Mario Maker looks kinda cool. -Last, 65daysofstatic's performance was really good. I'd say it was the best performance of the night but I post it last because this. Posted Image Didn't expect this to be retweeted, both because I didn't @ them and because what I thought of the rest of the show was perfectly clear. You can't misinterpret this. I laughed like a madman. Lowlights: -TotalBiscuit winning an award. I expect to disagree with game awards; I'm not exactly the target audience even if I do game. I'm more than a little annoyed that they rewarded a privileged, arrogant asshole, even if awards don't mean jack shit. -The "comedians". They played to common gamer stereotypes, told a longass joke that led to a shitty "Ms. Pacman" punchline, told a joke about "Orchestral Hero" that was obviously poking fun at GH/RB (wouldn't have had an issue if it were a good joke), said something along the lines of "LET'S GO TO THE STRIP CLUB REGGIE", etcetera. This was just awful in every way. Shit like this is why nobody will take a gaming awards show, and by extension gamers/the medium, seriously. It was at about this point that I feel the show went from "decent" to "bad". -Not. Many. Awards. Darkie said he wished this were more of an awards show, which I agree with. They gave stage time to some awards but others were presented off on the side. It's as if they wanted more time for advertisements/trailers. While we know advertising is a big fucking point of these shows, at least *try* to make it feel like an awards show. -Feel like it could have used more women. There weren't many people on the show in the first place, but still. iJustine barely talked, being there to present an award. The Sierra lady had a bit more time to talk because she was receiving an award. Lindsay Sterling played for ~3 minutes. Overall there were like a few minutes of women and over two hours of men. Not a dealbreaker but come on. You can do better. Same goes for people of color really; you had the black comedian (who sucked) and the Nintendo representatives. -The barely disguised advertising. I expect ads. I don't expect or appreciate ads that purport to be related to vidya games but are actually just ads. The FarCry 4 thing that re-enacted No Man's Sky trailer comes to mind here. -Stupid hype for stupid games. If you're promising "real consequences" when no game has come anywhere NEAR making our decisions feel like they have weight, I'm going to assume you're wrong. If you're saying you made a game that tries to feel like a TV drama but is glorified cops and robbers, I probably won't believe you. If you're saying you made a game to show you can discuss serious stuff in the vidya, well, I'm just going to laugh at you. Vidya has a maturity problem IMO, in that the things that earn the M aren't truly mature. -It's probably a bit much to expect anything truly innovative to be announced at an award show, given that a lot of innovation is coming out of the indie scene, but the games we heard about all either feel "samey" or we know too little about them to make any kind of judgment. There's nothing wrong with "more of the same" if it's being improved on, but we get too much of the same. If we are going to celebrate video games, we should also celebrate their future. I feel this was better than anything that was ever on Spike (we don't discuss last year's), but this was still a very corporate affair and this was still pretty insulting to gamers. I don't think Geoff Knightley is bad or anything. He seems like a decent host and he seems passionate about video games, but I think maybe he's trying to serve too many masters. I don't really know how else to put it. Edited by Romanticide, Dec 6 2014, 06:39 AM.

I dunno, I love him, but whatever. He's had a rough year dealing with colon cancer, and I'm willing to bet he probably thinks the award is a waste of time. |

*cough* Anyways, didn't watch the awards, but I'm looking over the things I missed. [utube]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aryAvSdRQgM[/utube] Yay for SMB3 and SMW styles added. Also, WHY DON'T ACTUAL MARIO LEVELS LOOK LIKE THESE?! [utube]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypR03D1nISA[/utube] These dubbed voices are so uncomfortable. Anyways, vast world with nothing filled into it (yet, hopefully?). Not much of a gameplay vid. [utube]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zq5eZVtPs8E[/utube] Yay new Fullbright game! All I can really say since that teaser didn't show anything. |
