http://kotaku.com/indie-studio-leaves-commercial-video-games-behind-1712954493 "Games as art" is a nice ideal, but there's never been a time in this medium's history where one can freely pursue that ideal. Other mediums have had it, and I think it's a major reason that they're so far ahead of games in terms of storytelling and arguably characterization. Developers have to eat and publishers have to make money for shareholders, which doesn't help matters either. Until people can make substantial games without taking months/years off work, games will always be products to some extent. Games being products isn't bad in and of themselves (Shit, most/all of our favorites were explicitly made to move units), but it does mean the artistic things that will push this medium forward will have a harder time coming to fruition, let alone succeeding. I see tons of potential in video games, but very little of that potential is put into better storytelling/non-violent mechanics. Why? Because that stuff doesn't make money for most developers/publishers. Looking into this situation a bit more, there's more than enough blame to go around. Tons of gamers don't like more "artsy" things, but this is true of all mediums. There are too many examples of "artsy" works that never had commercial success out there to list, so I won't even bother listing any. Simply put, most people want something that's easily accessible in every sense of the word. Even if you *do* like artsy stuff (I'd like to say I'm receptive to it), there is way too much of it competing for your limited dollars. It's inevitable that most of us won't be able to support everything that's worth our money. The developer messed up too. Releasing a very niche game with an unknown audience at a time during which gamers are saving for the summer sales is probably a very bad idea. Almost nobody is going to take a chance on your $20 game when they can get 2-6 for that price or less. Sunset did hit $10 during the sale, probably as a concession to this mentality/the desperate need for sales. If I had known they were going to go out of the gaming business, I would have given more consideration to buying the game than I did. Admittedly, it wasn't much because I decided I wanted VNs more than other stuff this go-around. I'll buy the game, I just don't know *when*. If it hit $10 again soon-ish, I'd be on it like white on rice. $20 is about the point where I stop taking chances and start waiting. Also, the marketing just didn't work. Gamers are an internet-savvy demographic and we abhor flashy/obnoxious ads like everyone else, so an adblocker is one of our very first extensions. Paying money to a site that likely has half of its audience using adblock strikes me as a bad idea. There's a pretty apparent divide between what the gaming media likes and what the majority of its audience likes, so appealing to "traditional games media" might not be a great idea for a game like this either. |

I heard the ports of the first two games were pretty good (got Arkham City for $5 on the Steam sale so I guess I'll find out), so I was surprised by this. It'll probably get patched tho. I wasn't in a hurry to get it (like I said, just got City) but I'll just wait to make sure it gets patched before buying it eventually. |

Yeah, the two first games are pretty well optimised, shouldn't be hard to run. This whole port seems to be incredibly disastrous, sadly. Glad that the console version aren't terribad, though! |

Twelve people. Fucking A. It'd be really easy to blame those twelve people, but the work didn't appear out of fucking nowhere. Warner Brothers gave it to them, while/after Rocksteady made the game. Fuck WB. Posted Image EDIT: Wondered what the Destiny thing was, and LOL FUCK THAT. Making people pay for the same shit twice is indefensible, no matter how you spin it. I believe I saw it yesterday, but since you felt the need to clarify, I figure you saw it wasn't clear either. Edited by Romanticide, Jun 24 2015, 05:22 AM.

That Bungie dev made me sick listening to his words. That is the most gross and horrific DLC greed I've ever witnessed. Well, maybe Evolve is still worse. Idk. But $80 is insane. $40 is insane. The base game is $59.99 and had 4 planets... Woo-hoo. The game didn't do anything for me as it was insanely Grindy and repetitive. But the Taken King DLC has one new world and is 66% of the base game's price. Someone PLEASE justify that. |

One of those planets (Mercury) is a single treasure room locked behind an insane skill/luck barrier. So that's three planets when we were promised the entire solar system. I was willing to overlook some of the unfulfilled promises since Bungie used to be such a great developer, but I can't really do that now. I still can't believe DeeJ, the PR guy, handled the responses to Luke Smith's interview so poorly. I'd expect a multi-million dollar company to try a little harder to make their paychecks happy. Edit: Just realized that DeeJ's entire quote wasn't in that article. Here's an article with his full quotes. They're at the top, of the article. Here are some uneccessary digs he made:

Yeah, LOL @Batman PC port. Apparently the 12 people working on it were from a company who've worked on iOS and PS360 games in the past. And they had 2 months to do the port. Good job, good effort. [utube]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzfvQh9CwCk[/utube] |
