I think I'll always regret investing so much money into the Wii ecosystems of RB/GH. There's no easy way to transfer songs, and even if there were, it'd probably cost money because licensing, etc.

Anyway.

I'll probably do this tonight, when I'm not watching anime and whatnot. If nothing else, I want to see how the game runs. I expect to gargle all the balls when it comes to playing it though.

Should check out dat PC Gamer article about the lulzy specs though.

In totally 100% #shocking news...

But really, this had to be expected after the XB1 price cut. Gotta keep up with the Joneses and the holiday season is almost upon us.

None of us have discussed the NX news yet? I guess there's nothing substantial yet other than "dev kits have shipped" and it's come up in chat, but I'm still surprised. Most of us are Nintendo fans to some extent, after all.

http://kotaku.com/report-nintendos-next-platform-nx-is-a-console-handhel-1736904323

I'd love to read the WSJ article on this, but, well, WSJ. Requires subscriptions and such, and fuck that.

I have to wonder how it'd work. Would it be two consoles in one? In other words, would it be comprised of a home console part and a handheld console part? Would it be one console that needs both parts to function? Would it be something else I can't think of?

No matter what I think of, I'm thinking this is going to need some serious juice to be any damn good, which is why I believe it will be a powerful machine. I doubt it'll be more powerful than a high-end PC though (like some rumors say), especially if it's based on mobile architecture; mobile parts just haven't gotten that powerful yet. Stuff like the Tegra X1 is pretty damn powerful by mobile standards, but the parts in a high-end rig put that to shame. Even if it *is* true, the problem is pricing. Is Nintendo willing to take a bath on every unit sold in order to make the price point palatable?

http://www.destructoid.com/excerpt-wtf-is-wrong-with-video-games-316139.phtml

Yup.

The comments section is pretty interesting. Nearly *all* gamers have played at least some games that aren't super serious and have played something with cheesy dialogue, but the author throws in the statement "I'm gonna do it anyway, I have a good-ass point to make here", uses a more breezy/informal tone and even snark in places, and people are just castigating him for it. This sort of thing would be perfectly okay in a video game, but apparently not in any sort of criticism. Apparently all criticism has to be super formal and stuffy, which probably comes down to preconceptions and misconceptions of what criticism is supposed to *be*. Never seen any ruleset that says you have to be extremely formal at all times or your opinion is wrong/doesn't matter. This isn't an academic journal; it's a part of an e-book that's being sold on Amazon/Gumroad for three fucking US dollars.

I'm not getting the "he just wants video games to be movies" vibe that a lot of them seem to. Just comparing games to movies does not mean he is saying "games should be more like movies"; that's a very shallow reading of the text. The best stories in other media are very linear, but that's because linearity is the strength of their formats. Video games have the potential to tell great non-linear stories, but I don't think there are very many titles, if any, that ever have. Some would argue Red Dead Redemption and Mass Effect, but I've never finished the former and lmao @ implying Mass Effect is more than a generic save the galaxy narrative with decent characterization.

If anything, the message I get is that the gameplay should supplement the story. I don't think I've ever gotten that vibe from a video game. I've played many games with great gameplay and a good video game story, but I don't feel as if I've ever played a game with gameplay that made me feel "this story could not have been told any other way". To me, that is the key difference between merely having both great gameplay and story, and having gameplay that supplements the story. Once game writing reaches that level, I'll believe games are finally able to tell truly classic stories, as opposed to stories that would barely rise above average in every other medium.

We also need subtlety and nuance. Killing everything on a screen, collecting X number of items, reducing an enemy's health bar to zero, amongst many other things, isn't exactly subtle or nuanced. It's doing video game things for the sake of doing video game things. It gets in the way of good storytelling and I'd argue it reduces immersion because these often aren't actions that make narrative sense.

People are missing the above points. It might be enough for a great game to do both gameplay and story well, but if you want video games to be taken as seriously as other forms of art, we need to go beyond that. We need games that tell stories in whatever ways that only video games can, and we need more subtlety and nuance. I don't consider statements like "video games should put gameplay first", "video games don't need stories", amongst others, to be addressing the same argument that the author is making. They're arguing points that the author isn't even making, and in a good number of cases, proving his point for him.

I just wish gamers were able to discuss criticism. Hell, not even that. I wish that as a group, we were able to handle the very *existence* of criticism. We can't. Every time a site points out, "oh, hey, this interesting piece critiquing *thing* exists", the users of that site burn the comments section to the ground. There are plenty of gamers out there who see any and all criticism, no matter how valid, as an attack on their identity. Their worldviews cannot tolerate it, so better it doesn't exist.

EDIT: http://kotaku.com/lightning-returns-final-fantasy-xiii-should-be-out-on-1737285939

woop woop

Been putting off re-buying the XIII games for a few reasons, but the biggest non-money reason is that Lightning Returns wasn't out on PC yet. Hopefully they've learned from the mistakes of the last two ports.

I'm extremely curious to see what the NX will actually be. A combination of handheld and home console is an interesting concept, but yeah...how would that work?
This article is also quite interesting, but what does "cutting edge chip" entail? Are they talking about the latest integrated graphics on CPUs? Are they talking about the GTX Titan? It's extremely vague, however it is enough to be exciting. This might give some weight to the speculation that the Nintendo NX will be a pretty significant console in terms of power.
I hope it wont be another Wii U, a console that comes in the middle of the other's lifespan with just slightly stronger specs, and thus receives no third party support outside of the first two years or so.
It'll definitely be incredibly exciting to see what Nintendo are doing with this system.

Re: NX, I'm picturing something like those laptops that have decent specs, but also have a desktop base component thing that you can dock it in for more power. But I dunno. Also, yay Lightning Returns.

I thought some more about the NX last night, maybe it's kind of like the Nvidia Shield line? The console is the main powerhouse that you play when at home, but if you travel away you're able to stream the content using the power of the home console. This would obviously require a pretty good and stable internet connection on both ends, but I do think it seems like a plausible way to go about it.

This video is what made me think about it a bit more.

http://kotaku.com/batman-arkham-knight-s-pc-version-is-far-from-fixed-1739462839

#videogames

The fuck does this port do now, load everything to RAM? I can't think of a good reason this game would need 12 GB of RAM when almost nothing needs *half* that. Sure, they all "recommend" 8 GB now, but lol system recommendations.

Still a bad port and they only put it out because holidays. Fuck WB.

EDIT: AT LEAST A MONTH OF ADDITIONAL WORK TO ADD SUPPORT FOR DLC

AMAZING WORK

Nintendo Direct was today and, well, I'm disappointed. Finally got my HD Twilight Princess.... And it barely looks any better than it did in 2006.... But it's all good cuz they're shipping it with a new Amiibo!!! Ugh.

Star Fox 64 remake errrrrrrr Zero looks alright. Cloud DLC for Smash is cool (still waiting for Krystal).

Zelda Wii U looks good in the 10 second teaser they released :)

Keep Moving Forward

There appears to be this misconception that HD releases of older games mean completely overhauled graphics, but that's not the case. All it means is higher resolution textures and modern anti-aliasing. That is what an HD rerelease is. Stuff like Halo Anniversary, Resident Evil Remake, FireRed/SoulSilver/AlphaSapphire, those are remakes.

For the record, TPHD looks noticeably better. The game is fresh in my mind, as I had just watched my sister play it about a month ago. Everything looks clearer, and anti-aliasing! There also appears to be less bloom, which is a good thing because the abundance of bloom ruined the look of many scenes in TP.

Also, Star Fox Zero is absolutely not a remake of 64. The gameplay is entirely different, the only thing that's really similar is that it has Star Fox characters. I'm actually a bit annoyed at how different it is because I want a new game that improves on Star Fox 64's rail shooter gameplay. We actually haven't had an on-rails Star Fox experience since 64, and that was almost 20 years ago.

Cloud as Smash DLC is HUGE. I'm still in disbelief, and I've watched the trailer several times. There's just no way that this actually happened... and yet here we are. Man, I really need to finish FF7.

Linkle in Hyrule Warriors! I bought the game on launch with the art book, and really liked the designs it had for her. I never thought they'd actually go through with it. This is very cool, pretty much done purely for the fans.

I too would have liked to have seen more of Zelda Wii U, but the teaser was good enough for me. The game is not coming out until late 2016 anyways.

The Direct pretty much had exactly what I expected. More information on games we already knew about, more amiibos, and update news for Splatoon and Smash. I didn't expect any big reveals, and they already said that they wouldn't talk about mobile or NX in the Direct. I think the hype machine just took things a bit overboard.

Direct thoughts?

But first, press f to pay respects to Iwata.

f

It was better than E3, but... like that takes much?

Twilight Princess HD is pretty coo'. Sure, it might barely look better, but I'll be playing it on a not-CRT screen, which will make a fairly big difference in and of itself. I don't care much about the Amiibo, but that might be because it's not Midna's true form. THAT would be a great one to own. This one is cool and all, but I can live without it.

I don't know if I'll buy it day one. I need Nightwish monies, so this statement applies to like half the things they showed today.

I'm a sucker for Picross puzzles, so Pokemon Picross is right up my alley. It's "free to start", so I wonder how it'll work. If that just means I can pay to do more puzzles per day, I don't care all that much. I don't see me needing the powerups ever (I mean, I already do them sans hints), so if they cost money, fine. I can't think of any way for Nintendo to exploit the F2P model in a Picross game, but that's probably why I'm not making big bucks in the mobile sector.

X still looks like GOTY tbh. I was watching to see either this or SMTxFE stuff, so I didn't come out disappointed. We saw nothing new, but the environments still look spectacular, even if less fantastic than in the first, and the monsters look crazier/more awesome than ever.

Fire Emblem: Fates is looking like Fire Emblem I guess. It's just that I won't buy unless the creepy touching games in My Castle are changed for this version, and that "drugging a lesbian to make her straight" support arc needs to be changed to something else. Almost anything else would be better than that shit. I expect the former, if only because NoA is scared of the coverage that would result otherwise. Not sure on the latter.

You're asking me for at least $80 to have the complete experience. Fine. I ask that you treat marginalized communities better and make the creepy parts less creepy. Literally every piece of news since this game's announcement has made it worse, to the point where I don't even want it at this point. Do something to make me want it.

I guess the release date gives me plenty of time to wait and see. By the time I'll even consider buying this, I'll know for sure what made the cut.

Cloud in Smash is... interesting. Okay, it was done for the sweet, sweet cash. This DLC will sell like hotcakes because many of us have played FF7 anyway, despite not getting a "proper" FF on Nintendo consoles since 6. If you're going with non-Nintendo characters, there aren't many more iconic than Cloud. (rightfully or not)

I'll be buying this at some point. I don't love FF7 or Cloud or anything, but he should be fun.

Fuck the new Animal Crossing. Literally Mario Party: Amiibo Edition.

Never tried Dragon Quest, but if 7/8 come out at a good time (read: when nothing I want more is), I might. It feels like a series that I should at least try because it's so popular, at least in Japan.

EDIT: Forgot that I'll probably buy Pokemon Yellow. There's not really a modern equivalent of that one. I guess maybe HG/SS, in that they let any Pokemon walk with you? Don't really see a need for R/B when FR/LG exist though.

I got nuthin' else really. Everything else is either "mite b cool" or "dooooon't caaaaaare".
